The talk will give briefly the background to the LHC Computing Grid (LCG) Project, and then report on the status of the initial LCG service that is being deployed in many of the computing centres serving particle physics around the world. The plans for evolving this into a facility on the scale needed for LHC will be summarised, and the technological and practical problems that have to be tackled will be discussed.
