Soboleva SCOPE OF ICIS2003 ICIS2003 is the 10th in a series of international conferences on ion sources. The biennial conference brings together scientists working on all aspects of ion sources and their application. ICIS2003 is expected to attract about 200 scientists and engineers from ion source communities all over the world. The primary goal of the conference is to foster the exchange of ideas, results, theories, and techniques in different subfields and areas of application among workers from laboratories and industries around the world. At the conference all topics regarding ion sources will be covered, including ion production, beam transport, ion source-relevant plasma physics, novel techniques in ion sources and related apparatus as well as applications of ion sources and beams. LOCATION The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) will host ICIS2003. JINR is an international institute situated in a small picturesque town of Dubna. Dubna is about 130 km north of Moscow on the bank of the Great Russian River Volga, 100 km from international airport Sheremetyevo. AWARD The prize consists of a certificate and US $6,000 to be presented at the next International Conference on Ion Sources (ICIS’03). The selection of the recipient(s) is made by the ICIS’03 Prize Committee appointed from the membership of the International Advisory and the Scientific Program Committees. AWARD CRITERIA The Ion Source Prize will be presented for an outstanding recent contribution to the fields of ion source physics and technology. This contribution could be a breakthrough idea, understanding or design that leads to an ion source, or could be the ion source itself. The ion source resulting from this contribution must demonstrate significantly improved levels of performance over the currently-established state-of-the-art. The contribution must have been published, and must be available to the community for application. CRITERIA INTERPRETATION Ion Source: Definition: A device producing a beam of charged particles (heavier than electrons) suitable for transport to an experimental setup (e.g. atomic-, surface- or cluster physics), or to an application, such as accelerator injection, ion implantation, fusion driver, ion propulsion, etc. Critical element is formation of a beam, rather than simply plasma generation. Demonstrated Performance: The contribution selected must have led to the production of an actual, operating ion source (or must be the source itself). The ion source must have produced a beam of sufficient quality to obtain quantitative measurements of its characteristics. The performance characteristics must be recognized (as judged by the Prize Committee) as a significant improvement over the currently-established state-of-the-art. Publication: The contribution should have been published in a journal or in proceedings of a conference that is in the public domain. Primary supporting publications should have been published within the past 5 years; not earlier than January 1, 1998 for this cycle. Laboratory design notes, internal technical notes, or other written material, are not qualified as primary references, but may be submitted to support other publications. Full and open disclosure is necessary to the extent that a potential user could clearly make use of the concept or source design for which the award is given. More than one article may be submitted (together) to satisfy this requirement; for example, an article describing the principle plus another article describing the performance. ELIGIBILITY Nominations are open to candidates of any nationality for work done at any geographical location. The award may be shared between (a maximum of three) persons contributing to the same accomplishment. Once accepted into the competition a nomination will remain eligible for the following competition, unless a) it was the recipient of an Award, b) it does not comply with the Rules established for that competition, or, c) it has been withdrawn by the submitter or candidate. DISCLOSURE The Prize Administrators may release the names of entrants and a list of publications related to an entry if requested by a third party. Unpublished supporting material will not be disclosed nor will the names of persons supporting a nomination. Discussion regarding individual entries, scoring, etc. is regarded as confidential and will not be disclosed. NOMINATIONS The nomination package is submitted by a professional (physicist, engineer or management person) who is familiar with the candidate and his/her contribution, and can speak to the significance of the contribution. Every nomination must have a Sponsor who is a member of the International Advisory Committee (IAC) or the Scientific Program Committee (SPC) for this Conference cycle. The nomination package shall include: • A cover page including the name, title and affiliation of the candidate(s), a short title of the contribution for which the award is sought, and the list of relevant publications. Include on this page the name and contact information for both the Submitter of the nomination, and the IAC/SPC Sponsor. • A statement, signed by the Submitter, describing the contribution of the Nominee to the physics or technology of the field. • Full copies of relevant publications that have appeared in journals or widely-available conference proceedings. Note: Contributions to the present conference cannot serve as primary sources, as these proceedings have not yet been published. • A signed statement of support by the Sponsor from IAC or SPC. (The statement is not necessary if the Sponsor is the Submitter.) NOTE: All documents must be submitted in English, any papers in another language must be accompanied by a full translation into English. SUBMISSION PROCEDURE Two hard-copies (electronic and fax submissions will not be accepted) of full nomination package must be sent by mail or courier service so as to be received not later than June 30th, 2003, to: Jose Alonso ICIS2003 Prize Program Administrator 71 R 0259 Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory 1 Cyclotron Road Berkeley, CA 94720 USA Provide e-mail notification that a package is being submitted to: jralonso@lbl.gov Receipt of mailed package will be acknowledged. If package meets all submission requirements, submitter will be notified that package has been accepted into the competition. Similarly, any deficiencies in the package will be brought to the attention of the Submitter, to provide an opportunity to rectify any problems.
