Development of the Nuclotron Accelerator Complex

Scientific Programme:

Operation of the Nuclotron, internal and external target experiments. Development of the Nuclotron beam extraction system. Upgrade of the Nuclotron cryogenic system. Development of superconducting magnets for heavy-ion synchrotrons and beam transport channels. Increase of the beam intensity and extension of available nuclear beams. Development of the ion sources: laser, electron beam ionization scanner (CRION), polarized deuterons (Polaris). Upgrade of linac LU-20 (Z/A

0.28). Technical design and preparations for the booster ring construction. Development of the beam transport system.

Expected main results in 2002:

Providing of the Nuclotron operation during 2000 hours for tuning the accelerator regimes, beam extraction and physics experiments using internal targets and extracted beams. Improvement of beam transportation from the Nuclotron ring to hall No 205. Tests of the beam extraction and deflection devices with bend crystals at the Nuclotron, development of the crystal optical technologies. Improvement of the beam slow extraction system efficiency.
Development of the polarized deuteron source "Polaris". Development of a technical proposal on charge-exchange injection of polarized deuterons into the Nuclotron.
Development of the injector LU-20 for acceleration of ions with Z/A = 0.28. Stand tests of the new laser-driven ion source. Preparation of the electron beam ion source "CRION" for operation at the LU-20 and the Nuclotron.
Development of the control system, beam diagnostics, parameter monitoring of the Nuclotron systems.
Improvement of the power supplies. Increasing of operating reliability of quench detection and energy dump systems of the Nuclotron.
Increasing of the efficiency and operational reliability of the Nuclotron cryogenic supply. Activity on commissioning the reserve helium compressor "KASKAD"
Technical project for the booster construction based on the Nuclotron technologies.
Development of the superconducting magnet technology and design concepts. Stand tests of the new model magnets.
