Nucleus and Particle Interactions at Intermediate Energies

Scientific Programme:
Investigation of processes of strong, weak and electromagnetic interaction of elementary particles and light nuclei at intermediate energies with the aim of determining symmetries and dynamics of the interactions. Development and construction of set-ups for experiments at accelerators (JINR phasotron, PSI meson factory, COSY proton synchrotron) for obtaining new information and testing the present theoretical views in the topics. Development of projects for new experiments and experimental methods for intermediate-energy physics.

Expected main results in 2004:

Publication of results on the pion -decay probability and radiative decay e obtained on the basis of the earlier taken precise measurement statistics. Data taking on the radiative decay in conditions of the reduced background (PIBETA).
Processing of data from the study of the process pd (pp)n with forward emission of a proton pair with a low relative energy at the proton beam energy from 0.5 to 2.0 GeV. Measurement of the deuteron beam polarization (ANKE COSY).
Data taking in the pion beam at the JINR Phasotron at 100 and 68 MeV; processing the experimental data collected in 2003; obtaining and publishing physical results on the production of secondary nucleons and nuclear fragments in pion interactions with the ⁴He nucleus (DUBTO).
Completing measurement of the rate for the muonic molecule tt µ production and for the nuclear reaction. Estimation of influence of the -n final state interaction. Constructing, assembling and commissioning the setup for the study of the radiative capture of muon in deuterium from the muonic molecule dd µ (CATALYSIS).
Commissioning of the FAMILON setup at the muon beam of the phasotron. Test of a new active target (FAMILON).
Elaboration of the production technology for aerogel samples (increase in the refractive index range, low temperature drying, hydrorepelling). Participation in the preparation of a project for the Cherenkov observatory for the core of the superhigh-energy cosmic ray flux (AEROGEL).
