Development and Creation of the Prototype of a Complex for Radiotherapy on Beams of Heavy Ions on Nuclotron-M

Scientific Programme:
The main goal of the theme is creation of Medical-biological complex on the base of accelerator of protons and ions of VBLPHE and carrying out research program on the field of medical biology and oncology therapy. On the first stage it is considered development of new equipment for ion beam shaping and monitoring.
Research programme on the field of molecular biology besides other topics includes studying of the changes in the structure of genes of both animal and human under heavy ion irradiation with a wide range of linear transfer of energy.

Expected main results :

Development of the channel of transportation of ions of carbon with energy E=200-250 MeV/nucl with the size of a beams 2-3 mm from Nuclotron and from Buster of the project NICA. Calculations and development of fast scanning of a beam XY-directions from Nuclotron and Buster on Nuclotron-M, manufacturing and adjustment of the diagnostic equipment for the control of parameters of a beams of ions of carbon over energy, the cross-section size and position of a beam. Ultimate goal - carrying out of irradiations of phantoms with the purpose of definition necessary radiation dose characteristics for therapy of cancer tumours.
Expected main results in 2009:

Carrying out of calculations of systems of scanning and focussing of a beam of ions of carbon on a target.
System engineering a spatial monitoring a beam of carbon on a target in a mode of real time, creation of a model of the device, test on beam Nuclotron.
Development and manufacturing of detectors for measurement of energy of ions of carbon in range E=100-250 MeV/nucl.
Preparation of the technical project of a medical-biological complex on a basis of Buster (project NICA).
