Research of Biological Action of Heavy Charged Particles
with Different Energy

Leaders:   E.A. Krasavin
G.N. Timoshenko

Scientific Programme:
The central problem of fundamental radiation-genetic investigations is the clarification of molecular mechanisms of mutagenic effects in cells with various levels of genetic organization due to different types of ionizing radiation. Heavy charged particles are a powerful tool for such investigations. The character of DNA damages induced by heavy ions is strongly different in comparison with gamma-ray exposure. It is established that clustered DNA lesions are formed after heavy-ion irradiation. The repair of such lesions is strongly repressed. This circumstance reflects on the different radiation effects induced by accelerated charged particles.
