Physics and Engineering of Feedback Systems in Synchrotrons

Leader:   V.M. Zhabitsky
Deputy: N.I. Lebedev

Participating Countries, Institutes and International organizations:
Bulgaria, Germany, Russia, CERN.

Scientific Programme:
High intensity beam stability and beam density increase are actual problems in accelerators. To stabilize high intensity beams against transverse instabilities and to damp beam injection errors the transverse feedback system (TFS) is used in synchrotrons. The TFS damper kicker corrects the transverse momentum of the bunch in accordance with its displacement from the closed orbit at the location of the beam position monitor. The TFS allows damping of particles coherent transverse oscillations initialized by random kicks due to noise and mismatch phenomena in the accelerator devices. The LHC Transverse Feedback System that was designed and constructed by the JINR specialists in collaboration with BE-RF-FB CERN is proposed to use for research studies of transverse beam dynamics and regimes of the LHC Damper aimed at obtaining the design and ultimate beam parameters in the LHC as well as for investigations of non-linear regimes of the transverse feedback syst ems, beam dynamics and noise issues. Participation of the JINR specialists in the beam commissioning and tests of the LHC Damper at the LHC machine is stipulated too.
Results of TFS research studies are planned to apply for designing and construction of feedback systems and powerful electronics for accelerators at JINR, including synchrotrons in framework of projects NUCLOTRON-M and NICA, and in partnership institutions.
Expected main results in 2010:
