Information, Computer and Network Support of JINR's Activity

Scientific Programme:
Provision of theoretical and experimental research conducted by the JINR Member State institutes at JINR and other scientific centers with modern telecommunication, network and information resources. In order to fulfill the task, it is necessary: to provide JINR and its Member States with high-speed telecommunication data links; to provide fault-tolerant operation and further development of the high-speed and protected local area network of JINR; to provide development and maintenance of the distributed high-performance computing infrastructure and mass storage resources; to provide information, algorithmic and software support of the research-and-production activity of the Institute; to provide a reliable operation and development of the JINR grid-segment as a component of the global grid-structure.

Expected main results in 2010:

Provision of the reliable functioning of the 20 Gbps high-speed JINR-Moscow data link based on DWDM technology. Optimization of access to the Russian and global networks (RBNET, RUNNET, RUHEP, RASNET, GEANT3). Securing reliable operation of JINR links with Tier1 centers: CERN - for CMS experiment, FZK (Karlsruhe) - for ALICE experiment and SARA (Amsterdam) - for ATLAS experiment. Testing the remote access system to the LHC experiments and to the other research centres. Carrying out work on the development of the corporate network of the JINR Member States.
Provision of secured, reliable and failure-tolerant work of the JINR backbone main communication facility; modernization of the power supply of the central LAN facility. Maintenance of uninterrupted, reliable, and effective operation of the Institute's gigabit network highway. Working out the project and stage-by-stage transition of the JINR Backbone to 10 Gbps bandwidth.
Development, maintenance, and reliable functioning of the JINR Central Information Computing Complex (CICC). Upgrade of the CICC performance and extension of the disk space devoted to the data storage of ATLAS, ALICE, and CMS experiments and of other projects of the Institute. Supplying basic software support, information support, user registration, and consulting service of the CICC. Design and development of a complex system for monitoring all the components and services of the JINR information and computing infrastructure. Provision of the distributed and parallel computing support. Upkeeping efficient data flow control for processing, storage and effective search within mass storage memory systems. Development of the project for the conditioning system of the CICC computer hall.
Further development and modernization of the hardware and software environment for the information, algorithmic and software support of the research activities underway at JINR and JINR Member State institutes on the CICC basis. Technical support of the JINR portal. Modernization and support of the LIT servers and other information servers of JINR. Development of the retrieval systems at JINR sites. Development and maintenance of the websites of the "Physics of Elementary Particles and Atomic Nuclei" and "Particles and Nuclei, Letters" journals. Support and modernization of the scientific and administrative information systems and databases (in cooperation with other JINR subdivisions). Organization of a repository of the publications of the JINR staff members and its inclusion into the open access international repository network within the Open Access Initiative (OAI). Provision of access to full-text electronic versions of journals within the JINR research field. Participation in the development, creation and support of informational websites of various workshops, conferences, and symposia organized by LIT and other JINR laboratories. Support of sites of JINR subdivisions and sites of conferences and projects in a hosting mode. Further development and maintenance of the JINRLIB library (the library of computer programs created at JINR) on various computer platforms used at JINR (with priority on UNIX/LINUX-oriented platforms), support of the international program libraries CPCLIB and CERNLIB, supply of electronic access to programs and documentation. User information and technical support. Development of parallel applications converting traditional programs of numerical methods for run on multi-core clusters. Investigation on the efficiency of solving computing tasks on the JINR CICC clusters. Consecutive development and improvement of reengineering technology of distributed computations. Application of reengineering technology to the solution of a number of resource-demanding computing tasks. Enhancement of the paperless electronic document circulation information system. Development of training courses and practical classes on advanced information technologies, also in frames of the LIT grid-laboratory.
Provision of the reliable work of the JINR grid segment as part of the global grid-infrastructure with a fully functional set of services. Modernization and maintenance of the system of monitoring and accounting the resources of the Russian WLCG/EGEE segment. Modernization and maintenance of the web-portals of the WLCG and EGEE projects in Russia. Development and support of the middleware and applied software of the grid-systems: a) certification and testing new grid-components, b) improvement of instrumental means for monitoring the task execution within the grid-environment. Grid-infrastructure creation within joint grid-projects with JINR Member States. Participation in the project GridNNN (Construction of a grid-system of the national nanotechnological network). Development of a research grid-structure for testing new components of the grid middleware. Support of the HEPWEB system. Further development of the technical base of the "GridLab". Expansion of the JINR segment in frames of the system of metacluster computing "Dubna-Grid" integrating working nodes from different computer platforms. Development of the project of distributed training and research grid-environment, connection to it of sites from JINR Member States universities to provide training specialists in the field of grid-technologies.
