Investigations in the Field of Nuclear Physics with Neutrons

Development of the IREN source:

• Providing the neutron beam from IREN for physical experiments. Start of putting into operation of the second accelerating section. Design of the uranium non-multiplying target.
  
  
• Preparation of beam lines N 4, 5 for experiments at IREN. Determination of IREN beam parameters.
  
  Fundamental investigations of nuclear reactions with neutrons:
  
• Continuation of measurements of energy dependence of the radiative neutron capture cross section for the ²⁰⁷Pb isotope in the energy region from thermal to 10 eV. Obtaining of statistics necessary for the detection of the negative p-resonance in ²⁰⁷Pb or setting an upper bound for its possible parameters.
  
  
• Measurement of angular correlations in the reaction ³⁵Cl(n, p) ³⁵S in the resonance energy region at the IREN facility. Experimental determination of cross sections and angular distributions of reaction products of (n, p), (n,) reactions for fast neutrons at the accelerators EG-5 of FLNP JINR and EG-4.5 of Peking University.
  
  
• Installation of the detectors "Romashka" at the neutron beams of the IREN facility. Measurement of neutron cross sections. Measurment of the (n,) cross section for ²³⁹Pu.
  
  
• Investigation of prompt neutrons from ²³⁵U fission induced by resonance neutrons at the IREN facility using a double position-sensitive ionization chamber with Frisch grids. Construction of a two-arm TOF spectrometer of fission fragments.
  
  
• Measurement of the P-odd asymmetry in the radiative capture of cold neutrons on natural lead with the accuracy of 10 ^-7.
  
  
• Measurement of ternary and quaternary fission using MEDIPIX pixel detectors.
  
  
• Measurement of the ROT-effect for neutrons and gamma-quanta for ²³³U and ²³⁵U.
  
  
• Measurement of the intensity distribution of two-quantum cascades for the ⁵¹V, ⁹³Nb and ²³⁵U targets at IREN. Determination of level density parameters.
  
  
• Measurement of the delayed neutron yield and fission rate distribution within a massive (515 kg) target of natural uranium irradiated by deuterons with energies of 1-8 GeV.
  
  Investigation of the fundamental properties of the neutron, UCN physics:
  
• Experimental investigation of the properties of background at the nn-scattering measurement facility and the methods of its suppression.
  
  
• Preparation of the experiment for measuring (n,e) scattering. The formation of a neutron beam at channel 2 of IREN to suppress the background and test measurements of the angular anisotropy of scattered neutrons with a noble gas sample.
  
  
• Continuation of work on experimental verification of equivalence principle for the neutron.
  
  
• Continuation of carrying out experiments at the GRANIT spectrometer at ILL (France).
  
  
• Continuation of construction of a set-up for testing the possibility of cold neutron storage at the exit of an extracted neutron beam.
  
  Applied research:
  
• Element analysis of geological samples and boron ceramics by neutron spectroscopy. Further development of the element and isotope analysis technique using neutron resonance capture method.
  
  
• Installation of the pneumatic transport system for sample irradiation at the IREN facility. Start of measurements.
  
  
• Continuation of measurements of yields of Mo-100 and Sn-117m medical isotopes at the bremsstrahlung electron beam at IREN.
  
  
• Determination of neutron characteristics of the reactor channel 11B at IBR-2M and carrying out of calibration measurements of the delayed neutron yield of ²³⁵U.
  
  
• Investigation of depth profiles of various elements using beams of charged particles.
  
  
• Mathematical and physical modeling and calibration of neutron detectors for space vehicles.
  
  
• Biomonitoring of atmospheric deposition of trace elements in some selected areas of Russia, countries of Eastern and Central Europe (Poland, Belarus, Slovakia, Norway), in the Balkans (Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Croatia and Montenegro) and in Asia (Vietnam, India, Mongolia and Thailand). Continuation of investigations using NAA in ecology, medicine, biotechnology of nanoparticles of gold and silver and development of new materials (synthesis of fine-crystalline diamonds and boron nitride).
