Detection of Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays by Radio Method

Tsarev V. A.

The overview is concerned with discussion of feasibility for detection of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays (UHECR) by radio method using satellite-borne and balloon-borne receivers. The essence of the UHECR paradox is stated, and various models aimed at its resolving are considered. The mechanisms of radio wave generation by extensive air showers (EAS) are discussed. The essentials of the EAS structure and properties as well as the results of the EAS radio pulse calculations are presented. The peculiarities of detection of these pulses by satellite-borne, balloon-borne, and ground-based receivers are discussed, and various sources of background interference are considered.
