Proton Beam Extraction by a Short Silicon Crystal from the IHEP Accelerator

In the review, major attention is paid to the application of bent crystals for extraction of accelerated beams from high-energy accelerators. This paper presents the physical background for particle extraction from IHEP accelerator by means of short bent silicon crystals, analyses the results of the studies, considers in detail the regime of simultaneous work of crystal extraction and several internal targets. It has been shown experimentally that by use of short crystals one can obtain extracted beams with intensity of ~1012 proton/cycle with efficiency of ~85 %. Finally we discuss some new possibilities of steering high-energy charged-particle beams by bent crystals.
