Principles of the collaboration
Conceptually, the collaboration of Russia and Dubna member stated joins
the efforts of many groups from different institutes and countries, and
concentrates the efforts on a number of well-defined CMS subsystems
(in particular, on the endcap detector system), and involves extensively
the industry of the participating countries. In this way, it became
possible to join the scientific, technical, and financial contributions
and responsibilities of particular institutes and countries, and form
out of them a joint contribution of the collaboration to the experiment.
This joint contribution is substantial. The collaboration has taken full
responsibility for the development and realisation of a number of
subprojects of CMS.
The funding and the contributions from the Russian institutes,
and from JINR as from an international organization located in the
Russian Federation are defined in the "Appendix to the Protocol
Concerning Participation in the Large Hadron Collider Project (LHC)"
and the "Memorandum of Understanding for Collaboration in the Construction
of the CMS Detector". For the JINR member states, there are two participation
options. First option uses the state dues into the JINR budget.
The second option is to contribute directly to the CMS project.
The financial obligations are fixed in the trilateral agreements between
a participating country, JINR, and CERN. The obligations are implemented
in the contracts between JINR and the participating countries.
The substantial contribution of the RDMS groups to the research and
development of the detector has been reflected well in the CMS management.
Presently, representatives of RDMS are appointed as coordinators of subsystems
of the set-up. The coordinators participate in the management of the collaboration,
and join the efforts of many groups from different institutes that are
concentrated on the general subdirections in the design, optimisation,
construction, and commissioning of the CMS complex. The general scheme
of the CMS set-up (Fig. 1) shows the subsystems of CMS, and the degree
of the involvement of JINR in their construction.
The organisation of the RDMS collaboration enabled physicists from
Russia and Dubna member states to take full responsibility for the endcap
part of the CMS detector, as it was defined in the initial RDMS project
[2],
including the endcap hadron calorimeters (HE), and the forward muon stations
(ME1/1). In co-operation with other CMS institutions the RDMS scientists
participate in the subprojects of the preshower (SE) detectors, endcap
electromagnetic (EE) calorimeters, endcap muon system (ME), and hadron
forward calorimeters (HF).
