GENERAL INFORMATION

Dubna being  a host town of the Joint Institute for Nuclear 
Research  (JINR) ,  the  international   organization   for 
fundamental  studies,  has  a population of  about  seventy
thousands. Its area  located  about 120 km north of Moscow,
attracts  people  for  beauty  and  quietness.

If you  could  fly  over  Dubna  (one  might snatch  at the
opportunity to do it by helicopter for  an  extra  charge),
you would see below you  the  flowing  course  of the Volga
River routing  from  north to south and dividing Dubna into
the two parts known  as the right bank  and the left  bank.
From  the  air  we  can  pick  out  a  few  landmarks.  Two 
landmarks,  ideologically  opposite,  stand  out  clearly - 
a  monument  to  Vladimir   I.Lenin, of  all is the highest
in Russia, and two miles  southwards, the  Orthodox  Church
which  was  almost  completely  destroyed  in  the  forties
and  rebuilt  in  the  nineties.

Dubna  is   a  mixture  of  architectures.  Alongside  with 
old one- or two-storey buildings one can find  new nine- or 
fourteen-storey blocks of flats with all modern  amenities. 
By building upwards it has been possible  to provide plenty 
of  open  spaces  with  lawns  and  gardens,  and  to leave  
greenery that adds so much beauty to the scene.

We  cannot  boast  of a  traditional  big history like some 
cities can  because  in 1996  the town of  Dubna celebrated 
its 40th  anniversary. It was  founded  actually at the end 
of the forties in the  framework of the  Soviet Atomic Bomb 
Project  leaded  by  academician Igor Kurchatov who was the 
main  initiator of settling here two scientific labs  which 
joined  the  common  institute  later.  The place  near the 
junction  of the  Moscow-Volga  Canal (1937)  and the Volga 
River  was  chosen  by  the  Soviet government to carry out 
researches dedicated to nuclear physics.

We are  proud to declare that since 1956  Dubna has greatly
developed  and  become  a  scientific  and  cultural centre 
world famous. The most important  institutions in Dubna are
the  Joint  Institute  for  Nuclear Research, Institute  of 
Applied Acoustics, a satellite communication station  and a 
plant for production of light airplanes.

The Dubna  favourable conditions  make it possible  to hold 
conferences  of  different  levels.  Our  Institute  itself  
organizes approximately 50 meetings, conferences, symposia,
and  schools  every  year and  helps other  institutions in 
holding their conferences in Dubna.     

CONFERENCE SITES

There  are  two  places  to seat  participants of meetings.
They are  the Cultural Centre  "MIR"  and the International 
Conference Hall.

The main conference hall  of  the Cultural Centre "MIR"  is 
usually used for major scientific and festive occasions. It
has  around 700 seats and can be fully equipped to meet the 
organizers  and  attendees'  requirements.  There  is  also 
another  hall,  a smaller  one,  and  several  rooms  where 
different discussion meetings can be organized.

Next  to the  Cultural Centre "MIR"  is the second site for 
conducting conferences - the International Conference Hall,
a three-storey building.  It offers the main hall with more 
than  200  seats, located  on the third floor,  and  a  few 
smaller  auditoriums  designed  as   collaboration  groups' 
meeting   rooms.  Necessary  audio  visual  equipment   for 
speakers can be made available there. 

Located  on  the second floor are a cafeteria and, opposite 
it, a snack bar.      

ACCOMMODATION

Participants of meetings  are  usually lodged  in  the  two 
hotels: in either the  "Dubna"  hotel or the "Grill" hotel, 
both within the short walking reach of the Conference sites.

The  "Dubna"  hotel  accommodates  200  people. All  newly-
renovated  guest rooms, including  40  single rooms  and 17 
suites, are equipped with shower or bath, telephone and TV. 
The suites are usually used for family participants. 

Since there  are  few  single  rooms  available, it  may be 
necessary for delegates  to share accommodation in units of 
two rooms (for single and double occupancy).  Each unit has 
also a separate  bathroom  with shower. The room for double 
occupancy might be made available for one person on request. 

The daily rates vary from 20 to 50 USD (breakfast included) 
depending on the category of the room.

The "Dubna" hotel  facilities  include  a  small conference 
hall, a restaurant, a bar, a sauna, etc.

The "Grill" hotel accommodates 200 people. It offers suites,
single, double and triple rooms. Each room is equipped with
shower, home appliances (telephone,TV and refrigerator) and
cooking facilities. The  daily  rates vary  from  25 USD to
75 USD (breakfast included) depending on  the  category  of
the room.
