Construction of the IREN Facility
(Project IREN)

Leaders:

W. Furman
I. Meshkov

Scientific Programme:

IREN. Construction of the Intense Resonance Neutron pulsed source IREN based on a linear electron accelerator (LUE-200) and a neutron multiplying assembly.
Main characteristics of the IREN source:
The LUE-200 hat electron energy - 210 MeV, mean peak current - 5 A, frequency - 150 Hz, pulse width - 0.25 µs, the and mean power - 10 kW. An electron pulse is converted into a burst of photoneutrons by a special target placed in the center of an air cooled breader.
The beryllium-tungsten target converter in a stainless steel envelope is cooled by the He gas flow. The breeder is the subcritical plutonium core with the volume 2.5 l and the breeding coefficient 30.

The neutronic parameters of the source are: fast neutron pulse width - 0.4 µs, mean power - 12.5 kW, peak power - 220 MW, mean neutron flux 1.0 1015 n/s, peak flux - 2.7 1019 n/s, interpulse background - 5.6%.

Expected main results in 2001:
