CMS - Compact Muon Solenoid

Scientific Programme:

The CMS design objectives:
(1) a very good and redundant muon detection system;
(2) the best possible e/ calorimeter consistent with (1);
(3) high-quality central tracking to achieve (1) and (2).
The major activities of JINR are focused on the following directions:
- preshower detector for electromagnetic calorimetry;
- cathode strip chambers for forward muon stations;
- forward hadron calorimetry;
- simulation;
- heavy-ion interactions.

• Mass-production and tests of cathode strip chambers for ME/1 muon station.
  
  
• Mass-production of absorbers and interface systems for endcap hadron calorimeters in co-operation with NC PHEP BSU (Minsk) and ENTEK (Moscow) at MZOR plant (Minsk). Participation in mass-production of the scintillation optics for endcap hadron calorimeters in co-operation with IHEP (Protvino), ISC and NSC KIPT (Kharkov). Mechanics assembly of the first endcap hadron calorimeter at CERN.
  
  
• Production in co-operation with SPJ ELMA (Zelenograd) and measurement of parameters of the serial silicon strip detectors for preshower. Radiation test of the serial silicon strip detectors with neutrons flux of 210¹⁴ n/cm².
  
  
• Design of CSC read-out electronics parts in co-operation with NC PHEP BSU (Minsk) and HV and LV systems in co-operation with INRNE and US (Sofia).
  
  
• Mass-production and test of strip electrodes for drift chambers.
  
  
• Simulation of physics processes for CMS experiment in proton-proton and nucleus-nucleus interactions.
  
  
• Provision of computer communication for data exchange between members of the experiment.
