Radiation and Radiobiological Investigations
at the JINR Basic Facilities and in the Environment

Scientific Programme:
Radiation risk assessment is a crucial problem in occupational and public protection. It is well known that there is a lack of data needed to estimate risk of radiation stochastic effects (mutations and cancer diseases). Therefore, there is a need for obtaining new fundamental data on the induction of radiation stochastic effects for radiation with different linear energy transfer (LET). Accelerators and reactors of the Joint Institute are an excellent tool for modern radiation and radiobiological researches and give a unique possibility to obtain such data. The ultimate goal is to obtain fundamental physical and biological data based on experimental researches at basic facilities of JINR and on theoretical modeling of ionizing radiation interaction with matter. Accelerators and radiochemistry facilities of JINR are able to produce different radionuclides for development of new radiopharmaceutical preparations as well. Research and development will include:
- LET and neutron spectrometry, radiation and biosensor monitoring;
- theoretical modeling of ionizing radiation interaction with matter including interactions with biological structures and shielding calculations;
- experimental data obtaining for verification of theoretical modeling of ionizing radiation interaction with matter;
- investigations of peculiarities and mechanisms of point and structural mutation induction in pro- and eukaryotic cells by radiation with different LET;
- the problem of low doses of radiation with different LET and cell recovery;
- genetic and radiation monitoring of environment nuclear installations with biosensors and radiation monitors;
- investigation of "methylene blue - 211At" complex therapy efficiency in melanoma cells.

As the results:
- methods for radiation and genetic monitoring at nuclear installations of JINR and in environments will be developed;
- fundamental data for radiation risk assessments will be obtained;
- methods for targeted radiotherapy and diagnostics of melonoma will be developed.

Expected main results in 2002:
