Scientific session of the Russian Academy of Sciences:
overview of research, strengthening partnerships

On 1 April, a scientific session of the Nuclear Physics Section of the Division of Physical Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences, dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences started at JINR. The event programme covers the basic theoretical and experimental aspects of particle physics and related problems of nuclear physics and cosmology. The meeting is organized by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research and the Nuclear Physics Section of the Division of Physical Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Opening the session, JINR Scientific Leader RAS Academician Victor Matveev spoke about the beginning of the implementation of the new Seven-Year Plan for the Development of JINR and emphasized the importance of strengthening international scientific cooperation.

"The 300th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences is an event not only of national, but also of global scale, because it is included in the UNESCO list of memorable dates. This session will provide an overview of the research processes that are held today in the fields of fundamental nuclear physics and particle physics. The event will also be able to contribute to the development of partnerships between scientific centres of Russia and the world," Victor Matveev noted.

Director of the Joint Institute, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Grigory Trubnikov addressed the guests of the event with a welcoming speech.

"The Institute's projects would not have been possible to implement without the united efforts of the entire nuclear physics community. Today, we can all see a return to the era of large scientific projects, in which major universities and research centres take part. This cohesion gives us confidence and allows us to make plans for joint research and experiments for the next decade. I hope that this scientific session will help a large number of experienced specialists and young scientists to join JINR projects," Director of the Joint Institute noted.

Director of the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics Dmitry Kazakov spoke about the format of the meeting, the programme of the scientific session and organizational issues.

Grigory Trubnikov's report "NICA accelerator complex: challenges and solutions" opened the scientific programme of the event. The status of the implementation of the NICA megascience project, the degree of readiness for commissioning of the basic components and experimental facilities of the accelerator complex were presented and the basic scientific objectives of the project were described.

During the plenary session of the first day, Head of the MPD collaboration Viktor Ryabov also gave a report on the physics of collisions of heavy nuclei and Scientific Leader of the Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions Yuri Oganessian delivered a report that was dedicated to superheavy nuclei and elements.

The scientific session of the Nuclear Physics Section will be held over five days. More than two hundred reports will be presented on the topics stated in the programme: physics at proton-proton and e+e- colliders; physics of relativistic heavy ions; quantum field theory; gravity and cosmology; physics of aromas; neutrino physics; particle astrophysics and cosmic rays; dark matter; exotic; low and intermediate energy nuclear physics; structure and spectroscopy of hadrons; detectors, experimental technique; physics and technology of accelerators; fundamental nuclear physics.
