JINR-CMS: 20 years of cooperation
in field of dimuon physics

The International scientific workshop dedicated to the 20th anniversary of JINR participation in Dimuon Physics Programme within the CMS experiment at the LHC has started today. The meeting is being held in a hybrid format in the JINR International Conference Hall and online. Head of the RDMS collaboration Igor Golutvin and Co-Chairman of the organising committee of the meeting, Head of the CMS physics programme at JINR Sergey Shmatov opened the meeting.

Scientific Leader of the Joint Institute, Chairman of the RDMS Council Victor Matveev on behalf of the JINR Directorate welcomed participants of the videoconference from CERN. In his speech, he highlighted the importance of international scientific cooperation. "We hope that despite all the external factors, scientific cooperation, in particular at CERN, will remain a priority for the international community," he said. Victor Matveev also confirmed the readiness of the Joint Institute to fulfil all obligations under existing agreements with CERN. "JINR remains committed to its motto to preserve all that is most precious to science, which our mutual obligations contain. Our cooperation is one of the greatest values of modern civilisation, its preservation is important both for science and for the world," he said. Speaking about the topics of the meeting, Victor Matveev highlighted that dimuon physics had served as a basis for the material and intellectual contribution of JINR scientists to the CMS experiment physics programme. "The potential of this direction is great, and we must use all its possibilities," the JINR Scientific Leader emphasised.

Also, the Head of CMS at JINR, Vladimir Karzhavin, addressed to participants from CERN online. "JINR physicists traditionally play a decisive role in the dimuon programme at CMS LHC, taking part in the collection and processing of experimental data, obtaining new results," he highlighted. "The contribution of scientists of the Joint Institute to the creation of the muon system of the experiment, the development and creation of the forward muon station, the development of the endplug electromagnetic calorimeter, the modernisation of detector systems for the search for the Higgs boson, and many other works has largely determined the success of the programme."

JINR began its participation in CMS at the stage of preliminary research and development, subsequently becoming one of the main participants in the experiment. At the opening of the meeting, the success of JINR scientists in the CMS experiment and their key role in the discovery of the Higgs boson, conducting a series of search experiments (Run 1, Run 2) aimed at discovering new physics were noted. JINR researchers have taken an active part in conducting precision tests of the predictions of the Standard Model, searching for new scalar states in the mass range from several tens of GeV to several TeV.

In the frames of two-day meeting in Dubna, more than 80 participants are discussing the search for new physics (new symmetries, extended Higgs sector, dark matter, etc.), precision tests of the Standard Model, future physics beyond the capabilities of the LHC. Students are actively participating in the meeting. The programme of the event also includes an anniversary session dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the discovery of the Higgs boson.
