What the newspaper wrote about on this day 47 years agoAt the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems new data on the investigation of the reaction of electron-positron pair production in the interaction of pions with an energy of 170 MeV with protons were obtained, the research of the processes of birth of strange particles in -p interactions at 5 GeV/c was carried out. Investigations of the possibility of a unified description of the semi-inclusive production of 0-mesons in -p interactions at pulses 5-205 GeV/c, as well as the birth of secondary particles in p-nucleus collisions at 70 GeV have been completed. More than 30 thousand interactions of high-energy protons (250 GeV) with photoemulsion nuclei were registered to search for new particles. The capture of --mesons by complex nuclei was investigated and the dependence of the correlation between the angular momentum of the residual nucleus and the number of emitted nucleons in this reaction was established. The work on the construction and launching of the first version of the "Spin" facility was completed ahead of schedule. The newly developed facility is at the level of the best world samples in its main parameters. The first results were obtained at the "Spin" facility in a new area of physical research for our Institute - the investigation of angular distributions from oriented nuclei. A group of scientists from the University of Sussex (UK) took part in the work on the machine.
An experiment is being prepared in the main hall of the synchrocyclotron at the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems. *** The Polish people solemnly celebrated the 32nd anniversary of the country's rebirth. 32 years ago, the first people's government the Polish Committee for National Liberation was developed on the land liberated from Hitler's invaders that proclaimed a manifesto announcing to the Polish people the beginning of a new life. A festive evening was dedicated to this significant date at the JINR Scientists' Club. A delegation from the Ministry of Energy and Atomic Energy of Poland took part in the celebrations. The delegation included Roman Gluszczyk, Andrzej Pomianowski, Alicia Parus. JINR Vice-Director Professor Chestmir Shimane highly appreciated the contribution of Polish specialists to the development of scientific activity and strengthening of international relations of the Institute. The Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Dubna City Council of Deputies V.F.Okhrimenko, Professor V.G.Solovyov, Academician I.M.Frank, representatives of the Hungarian and Bulgarian staff in Dubna Dezhe Horvat and Peter Morozov and others addressed the Polish friends with words of greeting. Many warm and friendly words were said to the Polish people. *** In the sector headed by V.N.Shkundenkov, an automatic machine AELT-2/160 on an electron-beam tube with scanning controlled from the BESM-4-11 computer is developed. The system of this automatic machine includes means of human-computer dialogue - viewing and measuring table, functional keyboard, display-monitor, display from magnetic drum, display of "Videoton" company. The automat is designed for processing 70 x 140 mm (160 mm diagonally) images from the obtained track cameras. At present, the automatic machine is in the stage of complex adjustment. Engineers of the BESM-4-11 machine service group headed by the machine supervisor G.P.Stuk connected displays of "Videoton" company to the computer. For the programmes required for the AELT-2/160 system, the operating system "OS-4/220 - Dubna" with the use of displays was installed on the BESM-4-11. *** By the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, an employee of the Laboratory of Computer Science and Automation, a laboratory assistant-measurer Maria A.Prislonova was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour. In Dubna, M.A.Prislonova has been working since 1953. At present, Maria Alekseevna is an employee of LCSA, she is engaged in processing films from bubble and streamer chambers. M.A.Prislonova has measured a great many stars and traces on a semi-automatic device and always with high accuracy and productivity. *** Dubna hosted an international meeting of scientists involved in the problems of controlled thermonuclear fusion. The meeting, organised by the International Atomic Energy Agency and the USSR State Committee for the Use of Atomic Energy, was attended by scientists from Great Britain, Italy, the USSR, the USA, France, Germany and Japan. Academician E.P.Velikhov in a conversation with our correspondent reported that this meeting of specialists from a number of countries is dedicated to one of the approaches to solving the problem of controlled thermonuclear fusion, namely, inertial plasma confinement systems. As V.Shvanev noted, the participants of the meeting stated that the meeting was very useful for finding out further prospects for the development of this area of thermonuclear research, they noted its good organization and that Dubna is an excellent place to hold such meetings of physicists. *** An exhibition "For you, trade workers!" was organized in the library of the Trade Union of JINR for the Trade Workers' Day. The books that according to the librarian L.Y.Smirnova tell about the honourable profession of a salesperson, both in journalism and fiction are presented at the exhibition. Irina LEONOVICH, |
