A computer communication session with CERN. From left to right: LHTA senior researcher N.Zaikin, LHTA Group Leader V.Pervushov, LHE senior researcher A.Vodopyanov.
Walter Hoagland, CERN's Director of research programmes, spoke at a general institute seminar. His report was dedicated to the plan of constructing a proton beam collider at CERN with an energy of 8 TeV (16 TeV in the centre-of-mass system of the colliding protons). This machine is known as the LHC - the Large Hadron Collider.

The seminar participants came into contact with the dramatic world of developing and competing ideas in fundamental particle physics. Progress in this science in the coming decade will be associated with the commissioning of three major proton beam colliders: the UNK in Serpukhov with a beam energy of 3 TeV, the LHC at CERN and the SSC (Superconducting Super Collider) in the USA with a beam energy of 20 TeV.

Participants of the II International Computer School work in a large international creative staff. Unlike last year's school, this time, its organizers invited a group of Soviet children from Moscow and American schoolchildren, mainly from the states of California and Arizona, through the international youth exchange programme "Children - creators of the world". Their future professions are related to natural sciences.

They started to learn about the Institute and the first was LHE. Here, in the conference hall, a meeting with Director of LHE Academician A.M.Baldin was held. He spoke about the need for fundamental sciences, about the cooperation of physicists of the Soviet Union and the USA, the first joint Soviet-American experiment in Dubna and answered the children's questions.

A delegation from the American city of La Crosse, headed by the city's mayor Charles Hanson, is arriving in Dubna. This visit should become a milestone in the relations between our cities - it will end with the signing of an agreement on the twinning of Dubna and La Crosse.

"Many participate in the hosting of the La Crosse delegation," Chairman of the Dubna - La Crosse Friendship Association Bureau D.N.Bell said. "The leaders of the city, JINR, Dubna's enterprises and institutions try to make our guests' stay in Dubna as pleasant and useful as possible. Sometimes, I hear from different people words like: "Well, what can we boast about to the Americans, how should we host them?" And I answer with the words of my friend, Head of the Department of International Relations at the University of La Crosse - Wisconsin that has visited our country more than once: "Host them in the Russian way."

The ecology of the Volga and its basin is a topic that has also attracted the interest of scientists from the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research: express analysis techniques developed in nuclear physics can be used to monitor the purity of the Volga and other rivers, as well as seas. Ecologists are interested in the opportunities available to physicists.

The 2nd Symposium "Current ecological situation of the Volga-Caspian basin and its impact on sturgeon" was held in Dubna. The organizers were the USSR Academy of Sciences (Department of General Biology) and the Ministry of Fisheries. For three days, representatives of academic institutes and industry science discussed the issues of water basin pollution and the impact of this process on the inhabitants of the Volga and Caspian Sea... The topic of the report by V.K.Boychenko, senior researcher at the Ivankovo Research Station (Konakovo) of the Institute of Water Problems of the USSR Academy of Sciences was "The impact of anthropogenic factors on the quality of water in the Ivankovskoye reservoir". The talk with him began with the question: what ruins our rivers?

- The Volga above Kalinin is a living organism, it is a river where you can feel the current. But unfortunately, this is the only such section of the river. And it is good that despite the preparatory work that has been carried out, the construction of the Rzhev reservoir has been stopped.

... Here, in Dubna, the Volga's biggest problem is the lack of storm sewers, storm drain treatment. During the flood, a lot of dirt goes into the river.

... I believe that we should unite our efforts to protect the Volga. I am ready to help to establish systematic sampling and analysis of samples from the river and reservoir in Dubna. Not from case to case, but on a scientific basis. In turn, I hope for Dubna's help in implementing water tests, especially for trace elements. I know that there are conditions for it here.

I.Nevolina, member of the senior choir of the Dubna studio, "Everyone knows that the choir studio went on a tour of Belgium and France. But the main goal was not the trip itself, but participation in the International Competition of European Choirs in Neerpelt (Belgium). Choirs from Austria, Germany, England, the GDR, Poland and Ireland came to the competition-festival. The festival participants had to perform at the competition with a mandatory programme. It is interesting that "thanks" to our mail we did not receive the scores of the competition pieces before departure, so we had to urgently prepare the programme three days in Belgium. For the first time we participated in a festival where choirs from many European countries were represented. This trip is also very important from a professional point of view: we learnt about new trends in choral music, heard an unusual performance of familiar pieces for us. The choir was awarded the Grand Prix, the Gold Medal of the Belgian Ministry of Education and a Diploma for participating in the International Festival. Another reward for us was that we got to know another culture there and felt a completely unusual attitude towards both choral music and Soviet children."
