Seminar in memory of Igor A.Golutvin

On 8 August, the International Conference Centre hosted the international seminar "Experimental Methods in Particle Physics" dedicated to the memory of Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Igor Golutvin. The event was dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the birth of this outstanding scientist, Scientific Leader of the CMS experiment at LHC (CERN) at the Joint Institute and Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation. More than 100 scientists took part in discussions of current issues in the development of modern experiments in the field of particle physics.

The seminar was opened by JINR Scientific Leader Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Victor Matveev. In his speech, he spoke about the key historical stages of Igor Golutvin's scientific activity and his significant contribution to world science. "During his work at the Joint Institute, he established a real scientific school and trained a team of vigorous qualified physicists and engineers, whose research papers are widely recognized throughout the world," the JINR Scientific Leader emphasized.

The second part of his message was dedicated to the history of founding and prospects of the RDMS CMS (Russia and Dubna Member States CMS Collaboration) that unites about 300 scientists from Russia and JINR Member States. The collaboration, founded under the scientific leadership of Igor Golutvin, not only preserved developing scientific schools and unique teams of physicists and engineers, but also created favorable conditions for attracting talented young physicists to the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.

Head of the Physics Department at CMS in VBLHEP Vladimir Karzhavin read out a letter from CERN scientists Tejinder Virdi, Michele Della Negra and Nicolas Kullberg, dedicated to the memories of Igor Golutvin during his scientific activities in Europe. "Igor Golutvin was one of the pioneers of the long and fruitful collaboration between CERN, Dubna and Russian institutes. He was accepted into the close-knit CERN community, professing the spirit of openness and solidarity. It was here that his taste for scientific research was developed and ideas for constructing new efficient detectors were born. The CMS collaboration remembers Igor Golutvin as an outstanding physicist, leader and friend," the letter says. Vladimir Karzhavin also spoke in detail about the stages of developing the detector systems of the experiment, noting the contribution to the work of the participants of the RDMS collaboration, founded by Igor Golutvin.

Andrey Golutvin, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor at Imperial College London, shared his memories of how his father influenced his research paper and career. In his report, he also presented plans for the development of the SHiP (Search for Hidden Particles) project, aimed at searching for weakly interacting long-lived particles, including heavy neutral leptons and light supersymmetric particles, emphasizing that this project is a continuation of his father's scientific legacy.

The report "Shoulder to shoulder with Igor Golutvin. The path to the discovery of the Higgs boson" was given by Professor Guido Tonelli of the University of Pisa (Italy), one of the discoverers of the new elementary particle. The Italian scientist spoke in detail about how the research that resulted in the discovery of the Higgs boson had started and what role Igor Golutvin had played in it. "He was a true maestro of science," Guido Tonelli summed up.

Chairman of the European Committee for Future Accelerators (ECFA) Paraskevas Sfikas spoke about the past, present and future of particle physics within the framework of CERN projects. He highlighted the key role of Igor Golutvin in founding the RDMS collaboration and his significant contribution to CERN research. In conclusion of his speech, the scientist spoke about the implementation of the physics programme of the new FCC (Future Circular Collider) project at CERN, expressing confidence that the number of scientific achievements obtained within the framework of the project will certainly increase thanks to the work of Igor Golutvin's students.

Leading researcher of the Physics Department at CMS in VBLHEP Anatoly Zarubin told about the scientific path of Igor Golutvin in his report, presenting the achievements of the scientist in detail. In the last years of his life, the outstanding physicist devoted himself to upgrading the CMS detector to ensure high luminosity and his last research was related to the development of a new detector to search for dark matter. Anatoly Zarubin emphasized that Igor Anatolevich was a scientist always looking to the future.

Igor Golutvin's colleagues, friends and students shared their warm memories of him: Alexander Zaitsev (NRC Kurchatov Institute, Russia), Eduard Boos (NIIP MSU, Russia), Vladimir Gavrilov (NRC Kurchatov Institute, Russia), Arsen Khvedelidze (JINR), Vladimir Smetannikov (JSC Inert, Russia), Vladimir Makarenko (Institute for Nuclear Problems of BSU, Belarus), Wolfgang Lohmann (Brandenburg University of Technology, Germany), Armen Tumasyan (A.Alikhanyan National Scientific Laboratory, Armenia), Sergey Petrusanko (NIIP MSU, Russia).

Igor Anatolevich devoted many years to the development of physical experiment techniques, detectors and experimental equipment for research in the field of particle physics. At JINR, he created a team that united physicists, computer specialists, electronics engineers, designers and qualified technical personnel.

Director of the Laboratory of Information Technologies Sergey Shmatov reported on JINR's participation in the CMS research programme. MLIT Scientific Leader Vladimir Korenkov presented the report "CMS computing". The leading researcher of the Sector of Techniques for Simulation of Physical Processes and Analysis of Observation Data at MLIT Alexander Nikitenko reported on the results of the analysis of the observation of resonance with a mass of 28 GeV in the two-muon decay mode based on the CMS Run I and Run II data. Head of the SPD International Collaboration at the NICA Collider Victor Kim presented the latest scientific results of the CMS experiment.

At the end of the Seminar, the chief researcher of the Standard Model Sector of the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics Nikolay Krasnikov spoke about the search for dark matter within the NA64 experiment at CERN. Leading researcher of the Radiation Detector Department of the High Energy Physics Department of the PNPI - NRC "Kurchatov Institute" Anatoly Krivshich delivered a memorable report "I.A.Golutvin - only devotion is justified".

The international seminar in memory of Igor Golutvin, held at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, became an important event paying tribute to the memory and respect of the Russian scientist with a world reputation. The event emphasizes the importance of preserving the scientific heritage and ensures the transfer of his invaluable experience to new generations of scientists, strengthening the ties between the past, present and future of physical science.
