Development of image detectors for biology and medicine is successfully carried out in the filmless chamber sector of LHE. The devices designed were awarded gold, silver and bronze medals of VDNKh, were demonstrated at the international exhibition "Science-83" and gained high praise from specialists.

The FLNR staff completed experiments on the synthesis of isotopes of element 108 and studied the stability of three of its isotopes with respect to spontaneous fission and alpha decay. Experiments were carried out on the synthesis of element 109 in a reaction between bismuth and iron-58 nuclei. Data were obtained on the cross section and type of decay of the isotope with a mass number of 266. Reactions of cold fusion of lead-208 and titanium-48, 49, 50 nuclei were studied. Registration of the decay products of the nuclei obtained in these experiments was implemented using physical and chemical techniques.

Most of the concentration of the natural spontaneously fissionable nuclide from the waters of the Baikal Rift Zone and the North Caucasus has been completed. A new facility has been developed to search for the nuclide in volatile fractions produced during coal combustion. The DEMAS facility has measured the mass and energy distributions of fission fragments of element 108. Commissioning of the U-400 high-frequency system on CHRYZOLIT generators, assembly of the beam reduction and decrease facility, as well as the assembly of five new channels has been completed…

According to V.M.Zhabitsky, the basic activity of the Department of New Acceleration Techniques was the preparation of the physical justification and project of Heavy Ion Accelerator Complex. Modes of the SILUND-20 electron accelerator were stabilized and a current of 300 A was obtained. A vacuum of 5·10-9 Torr was gained in the ADHEZATOR-20 chamber and the electron rings were extracted and accelerated. Optimization of the operating modes of the KUTI-20 head section is underway. The beam parameter measurement systems in the SILUND-20 and ADHEZATOR-20 accelerators were transferred to trial operation.

The 49th working meeting of the participants in the collaboration on the investigation of interactions of hadrons and nuclei with nuclei using a two-meter propane chamber was held in Dubna. About 50 representatives of laboratories and institutes from PRB, HPR, GDR, MPR, PPR, USSR, Czechoslovakia and SFRY took part in it. They discussed the results of physical research, the progress in accumulating statistics of events and the project of an experiment on the investigation of the quark structure of nuclei in neutrino-(antineutrino)-nucleus interactions using a two-meter propane chamber with plates of "pure" elements. This experiment is scheduled to be carried out in 1986-1990 at the Serpukhov accelerator.

The latest Symposium on Microprocessors and Microprogramming in Copenhagen (Euromicro-84) was the tenth in a series of symposiums and the third in which JINR specialists participated. Euromicro unites scientists from European countries working in the field of developing microprocessor systems and their software. The goal of this association, founded in 1973, is to disseminate information in this area of research. About 200 specialists from 23 countries took part in the Symposium. The JINR delegation included V.Sidorov, B.Naumann and V.Prikhodko.

PCs and their mass distribution stimulate the widespread introduction of computing machines into various spheres of human activity and it results in significant shifts in thinking, raises the culture of work and makes it more effective and productive. Today, we are close to estimating not only the scientific and technological, but also the social aspects of the use of computers.

More than 1600 scientists from 45 countries took part in the 13th International Congress on Crystallography that was held in Hamburg (FRG). "The JINR delegation sought to obtain as much information as possible in accordance with the research areas of the scientific groups that we represented," senior researcher I.Natkanets said. "Our reports aroused keen interest among specialists from different countries." It should be noted that it was the first presentation of the results of physical research at the IBR-2 reactor at an international congress.
