On 26 February, representatives of the Arab Republic of Egypt - representative of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research Dr. Ali Ghaleb Ahmed Ghaleb and Cultural Advisor to the Embassy Dr. Magdi Elyas Fares (in photo) visited JINR. JINR Director A.N.Sisakyan highlighted the traditionally wide cooperation of JINR scientists with Egyptian scientists, spoke about the development of research at the Institute in recent years, about the basic facilities and educational programme. The fact that Egyptian physicists are not random guests of our Institute was emphasized by Vice-Director M.G.Itkis, recalling their close ties with FLNR, the training of young specialists from the Arab Republic in this laboratory and the joint conferences held. In his response, Dr. Ali Ghaleb Ahmed Ghaleb noted that the long-standing and indeed, already traditional cooperation with JINR needs to be consolidated at the official level: "I have great hope that there will be new, stronger ties on the created basis."

The main topic of the 103rd session of the JINR Scientific Council was a discussion of the programme for the development of our own basic facilities until 2010. As JINR Director RAS Corresponding Member A.N.Sissakyan emphasized in his report on the main results of the Institute's activities in 2007, over the past four years, the funding situation has noticeably stabilized. It allowed us to move from the stage of preserving the Institute to its development. Along with the development of its own research base, the Institute intends to expand and deepen partnership cooperation with the main research centres of the world.

Professor P.Spillantini (Italy): In Europe, there are two international scientific centres - CERN and JINR. They do not compete, but complement each other. And we should support each other. In Italy, we cooperate with almost all national physics laboratories and there is no such choice - either CERN or JINR. If original research is carried out in Dubna, of course, we need to cooperate with Dubna.

Professor I.Wilhelm (Czech Republic): Gradually, Dubna is taking a new place in world scientific and technological cooperation... Dubna is an example of an open institute, international from the very beginning and in recent years, the situation has changed in the sense that science itself has become international and that's all they understand that there is no Russian, German, Czech science, there is just science and partnerships.

The regular XII scientific conference of young scientists and specialists of JINR was held under the most advanced and popular banner of nanotechnology: almost all the lectures given by the young people were in one way or another related to nanostructures, nanomaterials and nanotechnologies. Young scientists could report on their research at meetings of eight plenary sections, traditionally organized according to the main research areas of the Institute. Almost 80 conference participants represented all JINR laboratories, as well as the Russian Research Centre "Kurchatov Institute", Omsk State University and Pomeranian State University.

By the decision of the jury chaired by A.N.Sisakyan, the Ya.A.Smorodinsky Prize, established by JINR to reward scientists and journalists for significant achievements in the field of popularization of science, was awarded to V.Gubarev, a writer, playwright, journalist, author of the series of books "The Fate of science and scientists in Russia"; author of the script for the film "Alien ship"; the play "Sarcophagus", staged in 56 theaters around the world. The diploma and prize will be awarded at the presentation of his film "Academician Flerov's Bomb."
