Sport On the revival of sailing traditionsIn August, the 45th Dubna Open Sailing Championship was held in the waters of the Ivankovo Reservoir at the Recreation Centre "Lipnya".
Students and veterans of the Moscow Polytechnic Yacht Club, JINR employees and members of their families take part in the competition every year. Athletes perform on international class keel yachts and dinghies. Dubna yachtsmen have been honing their skills in these competitions for more than 40 years. This year, about 70 people took part in sports camps and championship competitions.
Sailing in Dubna has a long tradition. The Dubna yacht clubs at JINR and Dubna Machine-Building Plant arose in the mid-1950s of the 20th century, simultaneously with the official birth of Dubna as a city in 1956. The Dubna landscape could not be imagined without sails; sails over the Volga were the hallmark of Dubna. The JINR Yacht Club experienced a particular heyday in the late 1970s and 1980s, when many sports vessels were purchased and sailing regattas within the city brought together many JINR employees. The children's section under the supervision of N.N.Tikhanchev then numbered 30-40 people, its participants became winners and prize-winners of regional and all-Union competitions and subsequently devoted their lives to sports; several masters of sports and yacht captains were trained. Sailing competitions on the Volga are decoration of the city and a source of pride for the citizens. Joint sailing trips by athletes of different ages contribute to the mutual growth of professionalism of the participants, since this sport is one of the few that has no age restrictions. Sailing provides an excellent opportunity to develop logic and discipline, the ability to interact in a team and promotes self-control and self-realization in one's life. Sailing is a test of courage and ability to overcome obstacles along the way.
