The bench tests of the two-meter streamer chamber, one of the largest in the world, have been completed at the Laboratory of High Energies. Over 20 thousand photographs of cosmic particle tracks have been obtained in various modes of its operation. The SKM-200 facility is currently developed by the joint efforts of LHE and LHTA with the participation of employees of the JINR nitrogen plant, engineers from Alma-Ata, Tomsk and Polish physicists from Lodz. The recently completed irradiations of the one-meter streamer chamber in a beam of K°2 mesons have contributed to the development of individual units of the SKM-200 facility. The most important stage is ahead - assembly of the two-meter streamer chamber in the secondary particle beams of the synchrophasotron's slow extraction.

In the Laboratory of Computer Engineering and Automation, focus is on increasing labor productivity and rational use of the basic equipment (computers, viewing equipment, others), its modernization is carried out that constantly increases the productivity of mathematicians, physicists and viewers. Certain work has been carried out to save costs on materials purchased for servicing computers. First of all, imported wide-format paper for the SDS-1604A computer has been replaced with domestic paper that has a large economic effect. In 1971, LHTA took first place among the laboratories of the Institute in terms of rationalization that is also widely carried out in 1972.

In the last three years, scheduled production targets for the use of the vehicle fleet, the volume of transportation, the reduction of their cost and for others have been regularly exceeded in the JINR Transport Department. The output in rubles per worker has been growing from year to year. The amount of gasoline and saved tires has also been growing. Focus is on eliminating downtime and empty runs of vehicles. In order to reduce the downtime during repairs, as well as to save materials, to spare parts and to improve the quality of repairs, the department has organized an aggregate-section repair technique. In order to reduce empty runs on long routes, business contacts have been established with transport and forwarding offices in the cities of Klin and Dmitrov. The contacts constantly expand (if in 1971, the Department was paid 19 638 rubles for the transportation of accompanying cargo, then for just 6 months of 1972 - 16 680 rubles). Work is underway to improve vehicle maintenance, to mechanize labor-intensive work and to replace outdated vehicle fleets and equipment with new, more advanced ones.

Physical experiments related to the need for mass processing of film data are among the urgent tasks of modern nuclear physics. That is why the completion of the adjustment of the cybernetic complex "Spiral measuring device" designed for processing camera images and putting it into trial operation were one of the main tasks of the Laboratory of Computer Engineering and Automation in 1972... Throughout the four years, representatives of the Institute's Member States - Hungary, the German Democratic Republic, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Poland, as well as employees of the physical institutes of the Soviet Union - ITEP (Moscow), IHEP (Alma-Ata), Tbilisi State University and others have taken and currently take an active part in this research.

Development of the design of the optical and mechanical part of the "Spiral measuring device" that was carried out in the Laboratory by a group of designers under the supervision of I.I.Skryl, was carried out from the very beginning in close cooperation with the Institute of High Energy Physics in the GDR. Considerable assistance was provided by the staff of this institute and especially by Dr.R.Pose when placing orders for the manufacturing of optical and mechanical devices of the "Spiral measuring device" at GDR enterprises.

Cultural workers are entrusted with important and complex tasks. It depends on them that communication with art, in whatever way it takes, becomes for everyone not just fun, but a school of morality, thinking and intellectual culture. The Conference of cultural activists was dedicated to the discussion of these issues. In their speeches at the Conference, the Artistic Director of the Cultural Centre V.V.Novikov, Director of the Cultural Centre Yu.A.Chudomeev, member of the Komsomol Committee at JINR A.I.Sisakyan, Head of the children's sector of the Cultural Centre A.S.Komkova and others made a number of specific proposals for improving the work of the Cultural Centre. A decision was made at the Conference that outlined specific measures aimed at eliminating shortcomings and improving the work of the JINR Cultural Centre. A new membership of the Cultural Centre was elected. V.A.Shchegolev was re-elected Chairman.
