A wake for the departed

Vladimir Meshcheryakov
20.09.1932 - 10.03.2024

On 10 March, a former employee of the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, Professor Vladimir Meshcheryakov passed away.

Vladimir Meshcheryakov is a prominent Russian physicist and theorist, a well-known specialist in the field of the theory of elementary particles and mathematical physics. He proposed an efficient technique for constructing equations to describe the interactions of hadrons at low energies and considered a number of issues related to experiments at JINR and other Russian and foreign institutes. This technique results in a natural hierarchical pattern of processes, the most important of which have been studied in detail. This range of issues is presented in the book "Dispersion theories of strong interactions at low energies," written by Vladimir Meshcheryakov in collaboration with D.V.Shirkov and V.V.Serebryakov, published both in our country and abroad. Important results were obtained by Vladimir Meshcheryakov while studying exact solutions of nonlinear boundary value issues of dispersion theory. They allowed to formulate an approach to the investigation of hadron interactions, in which key processes for the experiment were considered and the occurrence of a bound state of a proton and antiproton was predicted. In the last years of his research, Vladimir Meshcheryakov carried out a global analysis of nonlinear equations of dispersion models in projective spaces and obtained a number of partial solutions.

Professor Vladimir Meshcheryakov paid great attention to the training of young researchers: it included many years of work on dissertation councils, supervision of graduate students and graduate students and lecturing at the Faculty of Physics of Moscow State University. Many of his students became candidates and doctors of science and successfully work in JINR Member States.

For many years, Vladimir Meshcheryakov headed a large group of theoretical physicists, as Head of the department and for 18 years he was Deputy Director of BLTP. His scientific and organizational work always demonstrated his broad professional outlook, integrity, responsibility and at the same time, goodwill and tact.

The scientific papers of Vladimir Meshcheryakov were repeatedly awarded with JINR prizes and government awards of the Member States. In 2003, he was awarded the title "Honorary Doctor of JINR" and in 2004 - the honorary title "Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation".

Outstanding scientific achievements and high human qualities brought Vladimir Meshcheryakov well-deserved respect and authority among colleagues and friends.

We express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Vladimir Meshcheryakov. We will forever preserve the bright memory of him.
