    Centenary of the birth of Mikhail Grigorievich Meshcheryakov
    On 17 September, JINR and Dubna celebrated the centenary of the birth of Mikhail Grigorievich Meshcheryakov, one of the founders of our town, the scientist of worldwide reputation, Professor, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Laureate of the USSR State Prizes, the first director of the JINR Laboratory of Computing Techniques and Automation (currently, the Laboratory of Information Technologies).

    Speaker: Max Klein (University of Liverpool), "The Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC) Project".
    Abstract
    The talk presents the design considerations, on the physics, accelerator and detector, of the LHeC, a new, polarised electron-hadron collider, with which, based on the intense proton and ion beams of the LHC, the physics of deep inelastic scattering will be explored up to 106 GeV2 of Q2, masses as high as a TeV and down to Bjorken x values as small as 10-6.

    Researchers on the OPERA experiment at the INFN’s Gran Sasso laboratory in Italy today announced the first direct observation of a tau particle in a muon neutrino beam sent through the Earth from CERN, 730 km away. This is a significant result, providing the final missing piece of a puzzle that has been challenging science since the 1960s, and giving tantalizing hints of new physics to come.

    The Committee of Plenipotentiaries of the Governments of the Member States of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, at its extraordinary session held on 7 May 2010, has taken the following decision:

    –– To terminate prematurely, as of 1 May 2010, the powers of the Director of JINR, Alexei Sissakian, due to his death.
    –– To appoint JINR Vice-Director Mikhail Itkis as Acting Director of JINR until the election of a new Director of JINR at a session of the Committee of Plenipotentiaries of the Governments of the Member States of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research.

    The Directorate of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR, Dubna) deeply regrets to announce that Academician Alexei Norairovich Sissakian, the Director of JINR, a member of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a distinguished theoretical physicist and organizer of scientific research based on broad international cooperation, passed away on 1 May 2010 in his 66th year of life.

    Today marks the start of the LHC research programme with the first attempt for collisions at 7 TeV (3.5 TeV per beam).
    Webcasts are available until 18:15 (Central European Summer Time - CEST). The main webcast will include live footage from the control room for the LHC accelerator and from the control rooms of the four main LHC experiments: ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb.

    On 27 February, Academician Albert Nikiforovich Tavkhelidze passed away in his 80th year. Albert Nikiforovich Tavkhelidze was an outstanding physicist and science organizer, the Georgian Plenipotentiary to JINR, a member of the JINR Scientific Council, one of the establishers and a scientific supervisor of the RAS Institute for Nuclear Research, the laureate of the Lenin Prize and the State Prizes.
