On 11 November, the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (ITF CAS) and the Bogoliubov Laboratory of Theoretical Physics of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research signed a cooperation agreement in Beijing. On 14 November, ahead of the session of the Committee of Plenipotentiaries, Director of the Joint Institute Grigory Trubnikov met with Rector of Belarusian State University (BSU) Andrei Karol at the BSU. The parties discussed the prospects of joint scientific projects and a double degree programme. The event took place in person and gathered a record number of participants: more than 260 young people under 36 from 17 countries. On 6 November, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation hosted a meeting of the Supervisory Board of the NICA Project dedicated to discussing the status of the megascience project of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. Following the meeting, the board members approved an updated work plan for the construction and launch of the basic configuration of the VBLHEP JINR accelerator complex, confirming the Institute’s intentions to complete the project on time.   More in Russian.

On 31 October, the JINR Mir Cultural Centre hosted the opening of the Keep Your Balance photo exhibition and the presentation of the eponymous JINR corporate calendar for 2025. The exposition is organized by the
Press Office of the Joint Institute and features its employees who actively cycle while getting to work, exploring the city , and training in recognisable locations of Dubna, the city JINR is situated in. The exhibition will be open at the Mir Cultural Centre until 24 November.   More in Russian.

Scientists at the Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions at JINR, in collaboration with colleagues from scientific centres in Russia, China, and Kazakhstan, studied the properties of the radioactive decay of the new ²²⁷Pu (plutonium-227) nucleus and its daughter products. For the first time, the obtained data of the plutonium nuclei half-lives are in good agreement with theoretical predictions and existing taxonomists.   More in Russian.

On 30–31 October, the Laboratory of High Energy Physics at JINR hosted a workshop on polarised sources, polarimetry, and high-energy spin physics. During the event, the participants discussed the development of the polarisation research programme at the NICA Accelerator Complex, including the preparation of the necessary experimental equipment and key facilities, and promising cooperation areas between JINR and the leading scientific centres of the Russian Federation.   More in Russian.

Young scientists and specialist were awarded for their endeavours in science, technology, engineering, and innovation. DLNP and FLNP scientists at JINR, in collaboration with colleagues from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (Russia) and the University of South Florida (USF, USA), pioneered in studying the structural properties of the tardigrade radioprotective protein Dsup (Damage suppressor) and its complex with DNA. The study reveals new details of the highly effective DNA protection mechanism and extreme durability of one of the most radioresistant animals known to science, the tardigrade Ramazzottius varieornatus.   More in Russian.

The JINR Innovation and Intellectual Property Department announces that on 6 September 2024, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research received a certificate of state registration of the software for predicting radiation damage to nerve cells taking into account a detailed description of the subneuronal target, track structure, and radiolysis mechanism. The authors are Munkhbaatar Batmunkh and Lkhagvaa Bayarchimeg (JINR Laboratory of Radiation Biology). 9 October 2024 marks the centenary of the birth of a talented scientist in nuclear and particle physics, one of the founders of the JINR Laboratory of High Energy, LHE Director in 1966–1968, Professor Ivan V. Chuvilo (09/10/1924-16/03/2001).   More in Russian.

JINR theoretical physicists, together with their colleagues from Moscow State University and universities of Tomsk, presented a new particle model that generalises an infinite (continuous) spin particle in flat space for constant curvature space. The model is described by commuting Weyl spinor additional coordinates.   More in Russian.

On 9–27 September, the second stage of the International Practice for students and postgraduates from universities of the JINR Member States took place at the University Centre of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. During the three weeks, 37 young participants from Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Serbia, South Africa, and Vietnam worked on educational and research projects under the guidance of the Institute’s leading researchers.  More in Russian.

A leading researcher at the Standard Model Sector of the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics at JINR Oleg Selyugin studied new properties of elastic scattering of hadrons at small angles based on all existing experimental data for dσ/dt of pp and pp scattering at √s ≥540 GeV. As a result of the study, the main characteristics of the corresponding non-trivial terms of the elastic scattering amplitude were obtained. This opens up new opportunities for making predictions for hadron interactions at essentially larger energies at future colliders and at ultra-high energies of cosmic rays.

From 5 November to 14 December 2024, the JINR University Centre will hold the Wave 11 of the INTEREST (International Remote Student Training) online programme. As part of the training, participants work on selected projects under the JINR researchers’ supervision. Interest is a prospective platform for the development of international cooperation in education allowing students and postgraduates to get acquainted with the activities of the Institute and carry out projects remotely.   More in Russian.

Scientists from the Laboratory of High Energy Physics at JINR and their colleagues from China presented the engineering design of a forced-flow cooling high temperature superconducting (HTS) cable for a SMES system with high current capacity. This system is used to ensure stable operation of superconducting magnets in accelerators, including the one at the NICA Complex.   More in Russian.

IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity published an article on the specifics of the cryogenic cooling concept for superconducting magnets of the NICA Accelerator Complex, their design features, and test results by a research team from the Laboratory of High Energy Physics at JINR. From 24 to 27 September, the final part of the International Youth Acceleration Programme “Business Incubator of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO)” took place in Moscow and the Moscow Region. Theoretical physicists from the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics at JINR, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Institute for High Energy Physics of Kurchatov Institute, the University of Tours (France), and Stockholm University (Sweden) conducted a study on the negativity of the moment of inertia of (quark-)gluon plasma in a window of “supervortical” range of temperatures above the deconfining phase transition, T≃(1…1.5)T_c, found recently in numerical Monte Carlo simulations by two independent methods.   More in Russian.

Specialists from the Laboratory of Neutron Physics at JINR and research centres in Romania studied the multi-element composition of soils in the vicinity of siderurgical industry and assessed toxic risk. On 10–20 September, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research hosted a workshop on accelerator technology with the participation of specialists from Vietnam and South Africa. During the two weeks, they got introduced to the JINR research infrastructure and the intricacies of the structure and principles of operation of modern accelerator facilities. From 9 to 13 December 2024, the iThemba LABS Accelerator Centre (South Africa) and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research will organize the Second International African Symposium on Exotic Nuclei (IASEN-2024), which will take place in Cape Town (South Africa). Scientists of the Laboratory of Neutron Physics at JINR in collaboration with colleagues from the Technical University of Moldova и Horia Hulubei National Institute for R&D in Physics and Nuclear Engineering (Romania) evaluated the accumulation of holmium(III), erbium(III), and gadolinium(III) accumulation by cyanobacteria Arthrospira platensis using neutron activation analysis and elements’ effects on biomass quantity and biochemical composition. The studied elements had different effects on the primary biomolecule content, suggesting that holmium(III) and erbium(III) were more toxic than gadolinium(III) for Arthrospira platensis.   More in Russian.

JINR and Gomel State Technical University (Belarus) theoretical physicists performed analytical calculations of the tenth order QED radiative corrections to lepton anomalies within the Mellin-Barnes representation. This allows one to obtain, for the first time, exact analytical expressions for the radiative corrections of the tenth order w.r.t. the electromagnetic coupling constant e.   More in Russian.

Scientists from the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics at JINR and research centres in Romania and the Czech Republic conducted an in-depth study of the electrical and magnetic properties of a polypyrrole nanotubes/magnetite nanoparticles (PPyM) material embedded in a silicone oil matrix. The distinct electrical, magnetic, and rheological modulation capabilities demonstrated by this composite render it as a promising candidate for advanced applications, such as sensory technology, actuation systems, and energy storage solutions.   More in Russian.

Scientists of the Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions at JINR, LPI RAS, Skoltech,
Center of Crystallography and Photonics of RAS, and MSPU offered an innovative method for fabricating a thin-film polymer heating element with a continuous silver nanowires network embedded inside. The resulting flexible heating element can be utilized in medical devices for heating purposes or as a thermal barrier coating.   More in Russian.

Scientists from the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions at JINR analysed the shape of multiplicity distributions of prompt neutrons emitted in spontaneous fission. The study was carried out in collaboration with researchers from the University of Strasbourg, Paris-Saclay University (France), Eurasian National University, Institute of Nuclear Physics (Kazakhstan), Kazan Federal University и Dubna State University (Russia).   More in Russian.

Researchers from the Laboratory of High Energy Physics at JINR, Tomsk Polytechnic University, and three medical centres from Russia and Germany developed a Geant4 model of the electron beam mode in a clinical linear accelerator. The methodology employed in the development of the numerical model of the medical linear accelerator is vendor-independent, readily implementable, and allows for rapid calculations. Furthermore, the model can be applied for a variety of purposes, including the selection of parameters for the fabrication of heterogeneous dosimetry phantoms.   More in Russian.

In 2024, the Springer publishing company published in electronic form the monograph entitled
“High-order finite difference and finite element methods for solving some partial differential equations” by scientists of the Laboratory of Information Technologies and Laboratory of Theoretical Physics at JINR, Mongolian University of Science and Technology, and Institute of Mathematics and Digital Technology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences. On 4 September, the three-day ARIADNA Collaboration Meeting on applied research on accelerated ion beams at the NICA Complex began at the JINR International Conference Centre. The participants are scientists and specialists of 33 organizations from 15 countries, including Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Cuba, Egypt, India, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Turkey, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam. Scientists from the Laboratory of High Energy Physics at JINR, in cooperation with colleagues from Russian scientific centres, studied the possibilities of using ordered three-dimensional arrays of photonic crystals to generate gigahertz, optical, and neutron radiation in the interaction with the high-energy electron beam at the LINAC-200 Linear Accelerator. On 21 August 2024, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research and the Ministry of Science and Technology of People’s Republic of China (PRC) signed an agreement at the House of the Government of the Russian Federation. The document was signed alongside the 29th Regular Meeting between Chinese and Russian Heads of Governments. The aim of the new agreement is developing cooperation between JINR and China in fundamental research, facilitating personnel exchange, and expanding research opportunities.   More in Russian.

21 August marks the 115th anniversary of the birth of Nikolay N. Bogoliubov, an outstanding scientist, one of the founding fathers of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, and its director for 24 years. His exceptional personality and the large number of widely recognised scientific papers he wrote throughout his life amazed his contemporaries and are an inspiration for many to this day. Nadezhda S. Isaeva, who worked as Nikolay Bogoliubov’s secretary for many years and is now an employee of the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics at JINR, shared her memories, adding strokes to the portrait of the researcher.   More in Russian.

Scientists from the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems at JINR, Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), University of CAS, and East China Normal University conducted a study of silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) external cross-talk, in particular, including SiPMs for use in the nEXO and JUNO-TAO neutrino experiments. The results reveal a significant presence of external cross-talk in all tested SiPMs.   More in Russian.

In May 2024, Physical Review D published an article by a group of scientists from the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics at JINR and the University of Zurich (Switzerland), which focuses on the study of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) equation of state in external magnetic field and nonzero baryon density. This research was conducted using lattice simulations with 2 + 1 dynamical staggered quarks at the physical masses.   More in Russian.

A team of scientists from the Laboratory of Neutron Physics at JINR, Faculty of Physics of Moscow State University, Kurchatov Institute, and Chemistry Department of the Karaganda Buketov University (Kazakhstan) conducted research of the role of component interactions in dual semi-interpenetrating networks of water-soluble macromolecules and supramolecular polymer-like chains. The findings of the study pave the way for the development of dual semi-interpenetrating polymer-micellar networks, which are in demand in the petroleum industry.   More in Russian.

Leading scientists from the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics and the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems at JINR conducted research on coherent interactions of a fast proton with the short-range NN correlations in the nucleus, using data from the BM@N Experiment at the NICA Collider. A research team from the Laboratory of Neutron Physics and Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions at JINR, Centre for Cooperative Research on Alternative Energies CIC energiGUNE (Spain), and Scientific-Practical Materials Research Centre of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus conducted a study of charge-discharge processes in Prussian white (PW) electrodes with different level of dehydration. On 23-24 July, specialists from the Central China Normal University (CCNU, Wuhan) and the University of Science and Technologies of China (USTC, Hefei) led by Prof. Xiangming Sun (CCNU) met with JINR colleagues at VBLHEP for the Seminar on the Chinese-Russian Cooperation within the NICA MPD-ITS Project. This was the second in-person meeting between the members of the international team engaged in the construction of the MPD-ITS Vertex Detector. An international team of materials scientists developed Ni60A/WC in-situ reinforced composite coatings for Inconel 718 alloy. Researchers investigated the reinforcements/matrix micro-interface evolution, microhardness, and corrosion resistance. The work was conducted in cooperation with researchers from the Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions at JINR, Jiangsu University of Science and Technology (Zhenjiang, China), and Huazhong University of Science and Technology (Wuhan, China).   More in Russian.

Scientists of the Veksler and Baldin Laboratory of High Energy Physics at JINR and the Alikhanyan National Science Laboratory (Armenia) measured cross sections of proton-induced neutron emission reactions on thorium and uranium at energies below 18 MeV.   More in Russian.

Scientists of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research developed a neutron/gamma detector based on a micropixel avalanche photodiode (MAPD) and a plastic scintillator that monitors the status of the accelerator-driven Intense Resonance Neutron Source (IREN) Facility by measuring the neutron/gamma intensity in the target hall. The detector was engineered by specialists from the Laboratory of Neutron Physics and the Laboratory of High Energy Physics at JINR in cooperation with colleagues from research centres of Azerbaijan, the Czech Republic, and Kazakhstan.

On 21 July, an international school titled “Advanced methods of modern theoretical physics: integrable and stochastic systems” started at the Blokhintsev Lecture Hall at the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics at JINR. Using the example of the computing infrastructure of the BM@N Experiment, employees of the
Laboratory of Information Technologies and the Laboratory of High Energy Physics at JINR verified results of the simulation program, which is part of the software complex for creating digital twins of distributed data acquisition, storage, and processing centres. Theoretical physicists investigated the mechanism for generating neutrino mass in the effective field theory. On 11 July, the Big Hall of the Scientists’ Club hosted a round table with scientific secretaries of the JINR Dissertation Councils dedicated to organizational issues of independent awarding of scientific degrees. Scientists of the Meshcheryakov Laboratory of Information Technologies at JINR investigated the methods based on the Hopfield neural network for tracking simulated events of the SPD experiment by proposing optimization of the energy function parameters of the neural network. The optimization will improve the tracking results taking into account the specifics of the experiment. The event discussed the results of implementation of the quadripartite agreement signed in 2022 by representatives of JINR, FEFU, the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (FEB RAS), and the Government of Primorsky Krai. JINR Scientific Leader, RAS Academician Victor Matveev represented the Joint Institute at the meeting. On 3 July, the second meeting of the JINR-China Joint Coordination Committee on Cooperation was held in Shanghai, co-chaired by Director of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) Grigory Trubnikov and Vice Minister of Science and Technology of China Long Teng. On 1 July, the conference hall of the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics at JINR hosted the opening of the
74th International Conference on Nuclear Physics, “Nucleus-2024: Fundamental problems and applications”. This is the largest annual conference in Russia covering all energy ranges and aspects of modern nuclear physics. Different scientific centres take turns hosting the event each year, with JINR consistently being one of the organizers. This year, the programme committee includes representatives of JINR, Moscow State University, and

From 24 to 26 June 2024, Joint Institute for Nuclear Research hosted a three-day intensive, which was attended by high school students from Tomsk. Ten students and three teachers of the Zaozernaya Secondary School № 16 got acquainted with JINR, visited experimental laboratories, listened to lectures given by scientists, actively participated in workshops on nuclear physics, and in discussions of physical phenomena during the experiments demonstration. The visit was organised with the support of JINR Information Center at Tomsk Polytechnic University and the

On 24-25 June, the 59th meeting of the Programme Advisory Committee for Condensed Matter Physics will take place at the JINR International Conference Centre. On 17 June, the closing ceremony of the Internship for Young Scientists from the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) took place at the JINR International Conference Centre. The internship was organized by the International Innovation Centre for Nanotechnology of the CIS (CIS ICNT) with the support of the Interstate Fund for Humanitarian Cooperation of the CIS Member States (IFGS CIS) and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. On 13 June 2024, President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin initiated the technological launch of a Megascience Facility in Dubna, Moscow Region, – the superconducting collider of the NICA Accelerator Complex (Nuclotron based Ion Collider fAcility). This crucial stage in the implementation of the NICA Megascience Project marks the beginning of preparations for the physics run of the complex, scheduled for late 2024 – early 2025. Testing is now underway of the power supplies of the collider’s superconducting magnets and the superconducting magnet of the first experimental facility of the complex – MPD (Multi-Purpose Detector). The start of the technological run of the superconducting solenoid, the main unit of the MPD Facility, and the collider brings preparations for the launch of the entire NICA Complex to the finish line.   More in Russian.

In the second half of May 2024, work continued on strengthening JINR–Brazil cooperation. The JINR delegation made an official visit to Brazil to participate in the Autumn Meeting of the Brazilian Physical Society (SBF) on 19-23 May in Florianópolis and in a seminar of the Faculty of Physics of the Federal University of Santa Catarina. On 27-29 May, the delegation visited the institutes of the National Nuclear Energy Commission (CNEN). During the visit, the parties outlined many areas of scientific cooperation and laid out plans to sign a memorandum of cooperation.

On 4–7 June 2024, the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems at JINR will host a working meeting of the Baikal Collaboration in a hybrid format. More than 70 participants of the collaboration, representatives of nine scientific and educational centres from four countries, will discuss the results of the last winter expedition on the construction of the Baikal-GVD Deep Underwater Cubic-Kilometre Neutrino Telescope, the current status of analysis of new and previously accumulated data, modeling software development issues, and immediate plans for the development of the Baikal Neutrino Observatory.   More in Russian.

On 27 May, at the General Meeting of the Division of Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Director of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, RAS Academician Grigory Trubnikov, Deputy Head of the Accelerator Department of the Laboratory of High Energy Physics at JINR Anatoly Sidorin, and VBLHEP JINR Acting Director Andrey Butenko received the Academician Veksler Prize, a RAS award given triennially for outstanding work in accelerator physics. The JINR Annual Report on activities of the Institute in 2023 was published. As of 1 January 2023, the total number of the staff members at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research was 5,070 (without temporary staff members). Joint research was conducted with scientific centres in the Member States, as well as with international and national organizations in other countries, on 42 topics of first priority and one topic of second priority. 49 international scientific conferences and schools were organized and held. On 17 May, Satbayev Kazakh National Research Technical University (Almaty) hosted the NICA Days 2024 International Workshop in a hybrid format. The event was organized by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research and Satbayev University. Participants reviewed the status of the NICA Megascience Project and discussed the physics programme of the experimental facilities of the accelerator complex: BM@N, MPD, SPD, and ARIADNA. The results of the annual survey on social satisfaction of the employees of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research have been analysed. On 19 April, the Cuban Isotope Centre (CENTIS) Deputy Directors Mr. Rolando Agustin Serra Aguila and Mr. Jorge Caridad Cruz Arencibia visited the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The Isotope Centre is a leading Cuban enterprise for the production and development of radiopharmaceuticals. During the meeting with JINR Deputy Chief Scientific Secretary Alexey Zhemchugov, the delegation discussed issues of developing cooperation in nuclear medicine, medical engineering, radiochemistry, and personnel training. As part of the working programme, the delegation members visited the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems, where they learned about the projects of JINR scientists’ in proton therapy and microtomography. On 14 April, an agreement between JINR and the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia (NAS RA) on cooperation in the fields of fundamental science, information technology, innovation, and education was signed in the Directorate of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. According to the document, the JINR—NAS RA Scientific and Technological Centre (JINR—NAS RA STC) will be established in the Academy of Sciences of Armenia.It will aim to maintain contact between scientists and specialists of the republic’s research institutes with JINR, deepening partnerships in the scientific and technical field, in personnel training, and in popularisation of life sciences. On 4 April, the JINR Information Centre at the headquarters of the Arab Atomic Energy Agency (AAEA) in Tunis hosted a meeting of the Tunisian society of women working in nuclear science, Women in Nuclear Tunisia. This was IC’s first joint scientific event with JINR. In compliance with the agreement with the AAEA leadership, the agenda included a brief presentation of the JINR personnel training programme and a scientific lecture in life sciences. The participants spoke of women in science at JINR, their scientific careers, and plans to participate in special programmes, particularly in the IAEA Lise Meitner Programme.   More in Russian.

From March 25 to 29, 2024, a scientific school for physics teachers was held at JINR. The participants were 23 teachers from Irkutsk, Saratov and Voronezh regions. The teachers’ visit was supported by JINR information centres in Irkutsk and Tomsk. On 27-28 May, 2024, the Workshop on Mathematical Problems in Quantum Information Technologies (MPQIT) will take place at the Laboratory of Information Technologies at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in a hybrid format. The workshop aims to bring together researchers from the JINR Member States and around the world working on mathematical problems of quantum information science to exchange their experience and research results. From 22 to 25 April, 2024, the third All-Russian School Conference “Fundamental Physics and Applied Technologies” will take place at the Engineering Physics Institute of the Dubna State University in a hybrid format. On 1 April, a scientific session of Nuclear Physics section of Physics Division of RAS, dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences, began at JINR. On 28 March, representatives of the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science (HFIPS) and the
Institute of Plasma Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the People’s Republic of China (ASIPP) visited the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research.The delegation discussed issues of scientific cooperation and joint participation in international projects with the JINR Directorate. The JEMS programme is designed to provide participants with a broad overview of the various fields of activity of the Joint Institute in the shortest period of time possible – 5 days.

A researcher at the Laboratory of Information Technologies at JINR Igor Barashenkov and a lecturer at the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics of the University of Cape Town Nora Alexeeva presented the variational method employing the amplitude and width as collective coordinates of the Klein-Gordon oscillon. The method leads to a dynamical system with unstable periodic orbits that blow up when perturbed. The authors propose a multiscale variational approach free from the blowup singularities. An essential feature of the proposed trial function is the inclusion of the third collective variable: a correction for the nonuniform phase growth. In addition to determining the parameters of the oscillon, the authors’ approach detects the onset of its instability. The work was published in 2023 in the Physical Review D journal.   More in Russian.

The event was held on 1 March in Havana under the chairmanship of the Plenipotentiary Representative of Cuba in JINR Dr. Gonzalo Walwyn Salas. The meeting was attended by the heads of several research institutes: Cuban Centre for Advanced Studies (CEA), Institute of Technologies and Applied Sciences (InSTEC),
Centre for Radiation Protection and Hygiene (CPHR), Centre for Technological Applications and Nuclear Development (CEADEN), as well as young scientists.   More in Russian.

The meeting between JINR representatives and a Brazilian delegation confirmed the parties’ interest in cooperation in almost every area of basic and applied research according to the Seven-Year Plan for the Development of JINR in 2024 – 2030. The Brazilian delegation was headed by professor Marcia Barbosa, State Secretary for Policy and Strategic Programmes at the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI). It was noted that the BRICS countries have a potential to collaborate multilaterally at the Institute to enhance national science and technology and train highly skilled human resources. The Republic of South Africa hosted a three-week RSA-JINR Summer School from 15 January to 2 February 2024. Ten Joint Institute for Nuclear Research delegates visited Cape Town to deliver valuable presentations in different scientific fields.  

On 31 January 2024, only two days after the signing of an agreement to open a new JINR Information Centre in Cape Town, a momentous meeting convened representatives from the Western Cape Educational Department (WCED) and delegates from the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), and the University of the Western Cape at
iThemba LABS. The focal point of discussions was the amplification of educational opportunities available through the Virtual Laboratories project of JINR to be made available to educational institutes of the Western Cape.  

On 29 January 2024, an agreement was signed on the organization of a JINR Information Centre at iThemba LABS, the National Accelerator Centre of the Republic of South Africa. JINR Director Grigory Trubnikov and iThemba LABS Director Makondelele Victor Tshivhase signed the document.  

From 25 to 28 February 2024, the International School on Nuclear Methods and Applied Research in Environmental, Material and Life Sciences (NUMAR-2024), organized by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research and the Agency for Nuclear Energy and Advanced Technologies (AENTA), is taking place in Varadero, the Republic of Cuba. As a part of the school programme, young Latin American scientists along with their professors and supervisors will attend lectures given by leading scientists from JINR and scientific organizations of Cuba and Mexico.   More in Russian.

On 19 February 2024, JINR Director, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) Grigory Trubnikov received the diploma and mantle of the Honorary Doctor of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU). The ceremony dedicated to the 125th anniversary of St. Petersburg Polytechnic University took place as part of a grand meeting of the SPbPU Scientific Council.   More in Russian.

On 15–16 February, the 135th session of the JINR Scientific Council will take place at the JINR International Conference Centre in a hybrid format. Members of SC will hear and discuss a report by JINR Director Grigory Trubnikov, consider recommendations of the JINR Programme Advisory Committees held in January, and elect Deputy Directors of the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems and the Laboratory of Neutron Physics. The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna Special economic zone (SEZ “Dubna”), and SEZ “Dubna” Fund invite schoolchildren of Moscow Region to participate in the “Ideas of the Future” project competition.

From January 22 to 27, the XXXI International Conference "Mathematics. Computer. Education" is being held at the State University "Dubna". The United Institute is traditionally one of its organizers. Speakers at the event are employees of three laboratories of the Institute.
The main objective of the Conference is to provide a platform for constructive dialogue between professionals in various fields of knowledge – from pure mathematical theory to application of mathematical models and information technology in scientific research and education.

We offer to your attention a paper “Dynamic polaron model for studying process of electron hydration” published in the Physics of Elementary Particles and Atomic Nuclei journal. The authors are Viktor Lakhno (IMPB RAS), Ilkizar Amirkhanov (MLIT JINR), Alina Volokhova, Elena Zemlyanaya (MLIT JINR, Dubna State University), Igor Puzynin, Taisiya Puzynina, Viktor Rikhvitsky (MLIT JINR), Maxim Bashashin (MLIT JINR, Dubna State University). A review of studies of the process of electron hydration based on the approach developed by the authors in the framework of the dynamic polaron model is presented in this paper.   More in Russian.

We offer to your attention a study “On scattering of massive neutral lepton on nucleus” published in the Physics of Elementary Particles and Atomic Nuclei journal. The author is Vadim Bednyakov (DLNP JINR). A theoretical approach to the description of the relativistic scattering of a massive (neutral) lepton on a nucleus, in which the latter retains its integrity, is presented in this paper.   More in Russian.

On 15 January, Dezsõ Kiss was born (15.01.1929 – 24.06.2001). He was the third JINR Director, Academician of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, one of the pioneers of Hungarian experimental nuclear physics and elementary particle physics.   More in Russian.
