Anniversary Lipnya 2026 summer school invites applications
From 17 to 19 July 2026, the 30th Summer School for Young Scientists and Specialists ( Lipnya 2026) will take place at the tourist resort of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research on Lipnya Island. Young JINR researchers and specialists, students, as well as employees of R&D organizations of Dubna and other cities under 36 are invited. Applications are accepted until 21 June.

The journal Physics of Elementary Particles and Atomic Nuclei, Letters, brief name Particles and Nuclei, Letters, publishes the articles with results of the original theoretical, experimental, scientific-technical, methodical and applied research. From 1 to 3 June 2026, the Gumilyov Eurasian National University ( ENU) in Astana is hosting the JINR Summer School. The educational programme for Kazakhstan’s schoolchildren, students, and young scientists includes a lecture series by JINR researchers. The event is part of the JINR Days in Kazakhstan, timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the Astana Branch of the Institute of Nuclear Physics ( INP) of the Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Atomic Energy and the 70th anniversary of the Joint Institute.

Scientists detect rarest natural single beta decay of zirconium-96
Researchers from the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems at JINR, together with colleagues from scientific centres in Russia and Kazakhstan, discovered a single beta decay of the zirconium-96 isotope ( 96Zr). It took physicists several years of continuous measurements to confirm the discovery of the rarest single beta decay process in nature.

FLNP JINR studying dynamics of medicinal compounds’ molecular structure
Employees of the Laboratory of Neutron Physics at JINR are studying the dynamics of the molecular structure of organic compounds using the NERA Facility at the IBR-2 Reactor and complementary methods. Research contributes to the development of methods and approaches used in the design and study of the properties of medicinal compounds, systems of targeted medicine delivery to body tissues.

JINR became platform for Russia–IAEA Regional School on Research Reactor Operation
On 20–22 May 2026, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research hosted a stage of the Regional School of Russia and the International Atomic Energy Agency ( IAEA), dedicated to the operation and use of research reactors in the Russian Federation. In Dubna, young specialists from Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Eastern Europe not only studied the features of modern neutron sources, but also got introduced to JINR’s scientific infrastructure.

Neutrino Physics and Particle Astrophysics programme invites applications
The Skobeltsyn Institute of Nuclear Physics of Lomonosov Moscow State University ( SINP MSU) and the Teach-in scientific and methodological centre, with the scientific support of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, are organizing a two-year online programme – Neutrino Physics and Particle Astrophysics. The training is free of charge. Applicants are required to undergo competitive selection process. Registration is open until 1 October 2026 via the link. The educational programme is open to citizens of the Russian Federation and Belarus – physics students who are at least in their senior year, postgraduate students, and active scientists.

BLTP hosted third School on Molecular and Materials Modeling
On 15 May 2026, a one-day Artificial Intelligence in Molecular and Materials Modeling school took place at the Bogoliubov Laboratory of Theoretical Physics in a hybrid format. Seventy people from more than five countries attended; 20 of them participated in person.
For the third time, the event was organized and conducted by employees of the Small-Particle System Sector at the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics Miroslav Iliaš and Dipayan Sen. The school first took place at BLTP in August 2025. Unlike the two previous online events, this school was held in a hybrid format.

JINR to host international school on theoretical physics
From 20 to 25 July 2026, the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics at JINR will host the International School on Advanced Methods of Modern Theoretical Physics: Integrable and Stochastic Systems. Master’s and postgraduate students are invited to participate.
The programme will include about 20 lectures. In addition, young specialists will have the opportunity to present their research results and discuss them with colleagues during a poster session.

Eleventh SPD Collaboration Meeting in Tomsk
From 18 to 22 May 2026, the eleventh meeting of the international SPD ( Spin Physics Detector) Collaboration is taking place at Tomsk State University ( TSU) in a hybrid format. More than 170 scientists and engineers from Russia, Armenia, China, Belarus, South Africa, and Cuba are discussing updates on the SPD Project, progress of the experimental facility’s creation, and the development of the IT infrastructure for the future spin physics experiment at the NICA Collider.

Latest results of BM@N Experiment discussed at JINR
On 12 – 14 May 2026, the Veksler and Baldin Laboratory of High Energy Physics is hosting the 16th BM@N (Baryonic Matter at Nuclotron) Collaboration Meeting. Over 140 scientists are discussing the development prospects of the fixed-target experiment at the NICA Accelerator Complex, particularly the physics run that finished in April with a record of 2.75 billion events collected.

From 1 July to 2 August 2026, the JINR Volga Recreation Centre will host the annual Summer School for young people to explore a wide range of professions – from researchers and data analysts to journalists and science artists. As always, the programme will include the Element 105 physics workshop organized by the JINR University Centre, consisting of two courses that will run from 1 to 11 July. Record 756 optical modules in one season: discussing results of 2026 Baikal expedition
The annual winter expedition to build the deep underwater Baikal-GVD Neutrino Telescope finished on Lake Baikal. This season, scientists installed a record number of 756 optical modules. The telescope‘s effective volume reached about 0.8 km 3, and starting with 6 April 2026, the Baikal Neutrino Detector systems are collecting data.

Nuclear physics and machine learning for archaeology
Scientists of the Laboratory of Neutron Physics at JINR and their colleagues from Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences ( IA RAS) and Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority (EAEA) used neutron activation analysis and machine learning algorithms to establish the exact origin and calculate the content of chemical elements in Russian medieval pottery. The results can serve as a basis for future geochemical studies and the development of new methods for classifying the found artefacts.

The Russian Science Foundation ( RSF) announces four open public competitions for research teams. One of them is aimed at extending the deadlines for projects supported by RSF in the “Conducting research by scientific groups led by young researchers” category.
Three competitions are dedicated to the priority area of the Russian Science Foundation‘s activities, “Conducting fundamental and exploratory research by international teams”, and are held jointly with the Belarusian Republican Foundation for Fundamental Research, the Iran National Science Foundation, and the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People‘s Republic of China, respectively.

FLNR JINR Centre of Applied Physics developed new device for efficient liquid filtration
Employees of the Centre of Applied Physics of the Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions at JINR received a patent for a development titled “Tangential filtration device”. The main feature is the opportunity to use the device several times for various research purposes, including micro, ultra and diafiltration. The device will find applications in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and laboratory diagnostics.

MPD Collaboration prepares for first experiments at NICA
From 21 to 23 April 2026, the 17th meeting of the MPD (Multi-Purpose Detector) Collaboration is taking place at the Laboratory of High Energy Physics at JINR. Around 200 scientists from 11 countries are discussing the readiness of the NICA Accelerator Complex and the Multi-Purpose Detector for the collider’s next physics run. It is planned to install the experimental facility in the normal position at the MPD crossing point in October 2026.

JINR – 70 years of history
The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research was founded by a decision of 11 states on 26 March 1956. The agreement to establish the new international organization was signed by Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, the Democratic People‘s Republic of Korea, the German Democratic Republic, Hungary, Mongolia, the People‘s Republic of China, Poland, Romania, and the USSR. Two more countries, Vietnam and Cuba, became Member States in the summer of 1956 and in 1976.

Spring CP JINR session: on updating JINR Charter and new composition of Institute‘s Directorate
On the eve of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, on 25 March 2026, a session of the Committee of Plenipotentiaries of the Governments of the JINR Member States took place at the International Conference Centre. The CP members approved the positions of the Institute‘s Vice-Directors, Chief Scientific Secretary, and Chief Engineer of the Institute, as well as new members of the JINR Scientific Council. An important result was the decision to form a working group to prepare proposals on updating the Charter of the international intergovernmental organization.

Registration for AYSS-2026 conference starts
From 17 to 21 October 2026, Tashkent will host the 30th International AYSS-2026 Scientific Conference of Young Scientists and Specialists. Students, researchers, and specialists under 36 from all over the world are welcome to participate. The event is dedicated to the 70th anniversary of foundation of the scientific centres that organize the conference – the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research and the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

On 3 March, the Republic of Bulgaria, a JINR Member State, celebrates the Day of Liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman Oppression, a national holiday.
