Scientists of the Laboratory of Neutron Physics at JINR and their colleagues from Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IA RAS) and Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority (EAEA) used neutron activation analysis and machine learning algorithms to establish the exact origin and calculate the content of chemical elements in Russian medieval pottery. The results can serve as a basis for future geochemical studies and the development of new methods for classifying the found artefacts.   More in Russian.

In April 2026, the JINR University Centre, together with the Southern Federal University (SFedU) and the Northern (Arctic) Federal University (NArFU), conducted an extensive training programme for science and engineering teachers in the regions. Employees of the Centre of Applied Physics of the Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions at JINR received a patent for a development titled “Tangential filtration device”. The main feature is the opportunity to use the device several times for various research purposes, including micro, ultra and diafiltration. The device will find applications in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and laboratory diagnostics.   More in Russian.

The journal Physics of Elementary Particles and Atomic Nuclei, Letters, brief name Particles and Nuclei, Letters, publishes the articles with results of the original theoretical, experimental, scientific-technical, methodical and applied research. Subject-matter of articles covers the principal fields of research at JINR: theoretical physics, elementary particle physics, relativistic nuclear physics, nuclear physics and related problems in other branches of physics, neutron physics, condensed matter physics, physics and technique at low temperature, physics and technique of accelerators, physical experimental instruments and methods, physical computer experiments, applied research in these branches of physics and radiology, ecology and nuclear medicine.   More in Russian.

The Russian Science Foundation (RSF) announces four open public competitions for research teams. One of them is aimed at extending the deadlines for projects supported by RSF in the “Conducting research by scientific groups led by young researchers” category.
Three competitions are dedicated to the priority area of the Russian Science Foundation’s activities, “Conducting fundamental and exploratory research by international teams”, and are held jointly with the
Belarusian Republican Foundation for Fundamental Research, the Iran National Science Foundation, and the
Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China, respectively.

On 14 April 2026, Scientific Leader of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions, Academician of the
Russian Academy of Sciences Yuri Oganessian turns 93 years old. An outstanding scientist and a leading specialist in experimental nuclear physics, he is known to the global scientific community for his fundamental research on the structure of nuclear matter and the synthesis of superheavy elements of the Mendeleev’s Periodic Table.

From 29 June to 10 July 2026, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research will host the
International summer school “Nuclear Dynamics: from Stars to Colliders”. The event is organised by the
Bogoliubov Laboratory of Theoretical Physics as part of the Dubna International Advanced School of Theoretical Physics (DIAS-TH) scientific and educational project. Master’s and PhD students, as well as young researchers, are invited to participate.   More in Russian.

Run 1 at the NICA Accelerator Complex is coming to an end at the Laboratory of High Energy Physics at JINR. Between March 2025 and April 2026, VBLHEP specialists commissioned key systems, implemented a fundamental research programme, and conducted a wide range of applied studies in radiation biology, medicine, and materials science.   More in Russian.

On 27 March 2026, the Council of the Association of Young Scientists and Specialists (AYSS) of JINR was elected during the AYSS General Meeting. The meeting took place in a hybrid format at the Laboratory of Information Technologies and online on Webinar. Based on the election results, Regina Kozhina (LRB) was appointed AYSS Council Chair.   More in Russian.

The sixth issue of Natural Science Review, an international online journal published by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, features articles on high-energy, particle, condensed matter, mathematical, accelerator, and nuclear physics, as well as a study in environmental sciences. The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research was founded by a decision of 11 states on 26 March 1956. The agreement to establish the new international organization was signed by Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the German Democratic Republic, Hungary, Mongolia, the People’s Republic of China, Poland, Romania, and the USSR. Two more countries, Vietnam and Cuba, became Member States in the summer of 1956 and in 1976.   More in Russian.

On the eve of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, on 25 March 2026, a session of the Committee of Plenipotentiaries of the Governments of the JINR Member States took place at the International Conference Centre. The CP members approved the positions of the Institute’s Vice-Directors, Chief Scientific Secretary, and Chief Engineer of the Institute, as well as new members of the JINR Scientific Council. An important result was the decision to form a working group to prepare proposals on updating the Charter of the international intergovernmental organization.   More in Russian.

This is the third time that the honorary international prize was awarded to outstanding researchers for their significant contribution to the development of natural sciences, as well as for the popularisation of science.

On 19–20 February 2026, the 139th session of the Scientific Council of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research will take place at the JINR International Conference Centre in a hybrid format. The latest JINR news and achievements will be presented at the meeting. The programme of the session includes the election of the Deputy Director of the Dzhelepov Laboratory of Nuclear Problems, a number of scientific presentations, and the announcement of the winners of the annual prizes for the best scientific papers.   More in Russian.

On 9 February 2026, a cooperation agreement was signed between the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research and the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK, Japan) in Dubna. The NICA Accelerator Complex reached an important milestone. On the night of 12 February 2026, during the commissioning, simultaneous circulation of counter-rotating beams of xenon nuclei in the collider rings was achieved for the first time.   More in Russian.

On 11 February 2026, by decree of President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, Director of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Grigory Trubnikov was awarded the Order “For Merit to the Fatherland”.

A researcher at the Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics at JINR Zaky Ibrahim demonstrated in a series of computational studies how a universal mathematical approach can enable the design of devices for manipulating waves of various natures. His work shows that concepts from photonics and acoustics could be the key to creating next-generation neutron optics.   More in Russian.

The municipal 2025 Person of Science award was bestowed upon its winners at a ceremony held on 6 February, on the eve of the Day of Russian Science, in the science city of Troitsk (Moscow). JINR Scientific Leader, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) Victor Matveev received the award in Science and Life, the most significant one out of five nominations.   More in Russian.

On 6 February 2026, a stamp cancellation ceremony took place at the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, just before the Day of Russian Science, and as part of the Decade of Science and Technology. The new series is dedicated to the key technological achievements of science and industry in Russia. One of the central motifs of new stamps is Baikal-GVD, a flagship project of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research.   More in Russian.

On 24–30 May 2026, the Laboratory of Neutron Physics at JINR will host the 32nd International Seminar on Interaction of Neutrons with Nuclei titled “Fundamental interactions and neutrons, nuclear structure, ultracold neutrons, related topics” (ISINN-32). The participants will discuss various aspects of fundamental and applied neutron physics studies and neutron experiment design.   More in Russian.

From 2 March to 19 April 2026, the JINR University Centre will hold the Wave 14 of the INTEREST (INTernational REmote Student Training) online programme. The participants will work on selected projects under the supervision of scientists from the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The working language of the programme is English.

On 19–20 January 2026, the 62nd meeting of the JINR Programme Advisory Committee for Condensed Matter Physics took place at the International Conference Centre.The PAC members discussed the resumption of the user programme at the IBR-2 Reactor, along with the progress and prospects for upgrading the reactor’s spectrometer complex.

On 15 January 2025, a delegation from the Saratov Chernyshevsky National State University (SSU) visited the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The university’s representatives discussed the issues of strengthening collaboration in science and education with the JINR Directorate. More than 130 defenses, including 13 candidate’s and 8 doctoral dissertations defended in 2025, were held in the JINR Dissertation Councils after the resumption of their work in 2019. The youngest candidate of science at the Institute today is 24-year-old Ilia Nikolaichuk, a researcher at the Scientific and Experimental Department of Superconducting Magnets and Technologies at the Laboratory of High Energy Physics. In addition, in December, he received the Russian Government Award for young researchers in science and technology together with a VBLHEP JINR senior researcher Mikhail Shandov. Ilia Nikolaichuk shared his experience of successfully starting a scientific career.   More in Russian.

On 19–20 January 2026, the 62nd meeting of the Programme Advisory Committee for Condensed Matter Physics will take place at the JINR International Conference Centre. The NICA Megascience Project achieved an important milestone: on 11 January, at approximately 10:40 PM, a stable xenon beam circulated the red (lower) ring of the NICA Collider for more than 100 microseconds. Deputy Head of the Accelerator Department of the Laboratory of High Energy Physics at JINR Anatoly Sidorin discussed this accomplishment and plans regarding future work at the complex.   More in Russian.
