From 17 to 19 July 2026, the 30th Summer School for Young Scientists and Specialists (Lipnya 2026) will take place at the tourist resort of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research on Lipnya Island. Young JINR researchers and specialists, students, as well as employees of R&D organizations of Dubna and other cities under 36 are invited. From 1 to 3 June 2026, the Gumilyov Eurasian National University (ENU) in Astana is hosting the JINR Summer School. The educational programme for Kazakhstan’s schoolchildren, students, and young scientists includes a lecture series by JINR researchers. The event is part of the JINR Days in Kazakhstan, timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the Astana Branch of the Institute of Nuclear Physics (INP) of the Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Atomic Energy and the 70th anniversary of the Joint Institute.   More in Russian.

On 1 June 2026, the Days of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in the Republic of Kazakhstan began in Astana. From 1 to 5 June 2026, the Baikal-GVD Collaboration Meeting is taking place at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in a hybrid format. Researchers from the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems at JINR, together with colleagues from scientific centres in Russia and Kazakhstan, discovered a single beta decay of the zirconium-96 isotope (⁹⁶Zr). It took physicists several years of continuous measurements to confirm the discovery of the rarest single beta decay process in nature.

Employees of the Laboratory of Neutron Physics at JINR are studying the dynamics of the molecular structure of organic compounds using the NERA Facility at the IBR-2 Reactor and complementary methods. Research contributes to the development of methods and approaches used in the design and study of the properties of medicinal compounds, systems of targeted medicine delivery to body tissues.   More in Russian.

On 20–22 May 2026, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research hosted a stage of the Regional School of Russia and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), dedicated to the operation and use of research reactors in the Russian Federation. In Dubna, young specialists from Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Eastern Europe not only studied the features of modern neutron sources, but also got introduced to JINR’s scientific infrastructure.   More in Russian.

The Skobeltsyn Institute of Nuclear Physics of Lomonosov Moscow State University (SINP MSU) and the Teach-in scientific and methodological centre, with the scientific support of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, are organizing a two-year online programme – Neutrino Physics and Particle Astrophysics. The training is free of charge. Applicants are required to undergo competitive selection process. Registration is open until 1 October 2026 via the link. On 15 May 2026, a one-day Artificial Intelligence in Molecular and Materials Modeling school took place at the Bogoliubov Laboratory of Theoretical Physics in a hybrid format. Seventy people from more than five countries attended; 20 of them participated in person.
For the third time, the event was organized and conducted by employees of the Small-Particle System Sector at the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics Miroslav Iliaš and Dipayan Sen. From 20 to 25 July 2026, the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics at JINR will host the
International School on Advanced Methods of Modern Theoretical Physics: Integrable and Stochastic Systems. Master’s and postgraduate students are invited to participate.

From 18 to 22 May 2026, the eleventh meeting of the international SPD (Spin Physics Detector) Collaboration is taking place at Tomsk State University (TSU) in a hybrid format. More than 170 scientists and engineers from Russia, Armenia, China, Belarus, South Africa, and Cuba are discussing updates on the SPD Project, progress of the experimental facility’s creation, and the development of the IT infrastructure for the future spin physics experiment at the NICA Collider.   More in Russian.

On 12 – 14 May 2026, the Veksler and Baldin Laboratory of High Energy Physics is hosting the
16th BM@N (Baryonic Matter at Nuclotron) Collaboration Meeting. Over 140 scientists are discussing the development prospects of the fixed-target experiment at the NICA Accelerator Complex, particularly the physics run that finished in April with a record of 2.75 billion events collected.   More in Russian.

From 1 July to 2 August 2026, the JINR Volga Recreation Centre will host the annual Summer School for young people to explore a wide range of professions – from researchers and data analysts to journalists and science artists. As always, the programme will include the Element 105 physics workshop organized by the JINR University Centre, consisting of two courses that will run from 1 to 11 July. On 27 April 2026, a delegation from the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research visited the State Committee for Science and Technology (SCST) of the Republic of Belarus. The main topic of the discussion was the development of scientific and technological cooperation with Belarusian organizations. The annual winter expedition to build the deep underwater Baikal-GVD Neutrino Telescope finished on Lake Baikal. This season, scientists installed a record number of 756 optical modules. The telescope‘s effective volume reached about 0.8 km³, and starting with 6 April 2026, the Baikal Neutrino Detector systems are collecting data.

Scientists of the Laboratory of Neutron Physics at JINR and their colleagues from Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IA RAS) and Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority (EAEA) used neutron activation analysis and machine learning algorithms to establish the exact origin and calculate the content of chemical elements in Russian medieval pottery. The results can serve as a basis for future geochemical studies and the development of new methods for classifying the found artefacts.   More in Russian.

The Russian Science Foundation (RSF) announces four open public competitions for research teams. One of them is aimed at extending the deadlines for projects supported by RSF in the “Conducting research by scientific groups led by young researchers” category.
Three competitions are dedicated to the priority area of the Russian Science Foundation‘s activities, “Conducting fundamental and exploratory research by international teams”, and are held jointly with the
Belarusian Republican Foundation for Fundamental Research, the Iran National Science Foundation, and the
Ministry of Science and Technology of the People‘s Republic of China, respectively.

Employees of the Centre of Applied Physics of the Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions at JINR received a patent for a development titled “Tangential filtration device”. The main feature is the opportunity to use the device several times for various research purposes, including micro, ultra and diafiltration. The device will find applications in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and laboratory diagnostics.   More in Russian.

From 21 to 23 April 2026, the 17th meeting of the MPD (Multi-Purpose Detector) Collaboration is taking place at the Laboratory of High Energy Physics at JINR. Around 200 scientists from 11 countries are discussing the readiness of the NICA Accelerator Complex and the Multi-Purpose Detector for the collider’s next physics run. On 27 March 2026, the Council of the Association of Young Scientists and Specialists (AYSS) of JINR was elected during the AYSS General Meeting. The meeting took place in a hybrid format at the Laboratory of Information Technologies and online on Webinar. The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research was founded by a decision of 11 states on 26 March 1956. The agreement to establish the new international organization was signed by Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, the Democratic People‘s Republic of Korea, the German Democratic Republic, Hungary, Mongolia, the People‘s Republic of China, Poland, Romania, and the USSR. The CP members approved the positions of the Institute‘s Vice-Directors, Chief Scientific Secretary, and Chief Engineer of the Institute, as well as new members of the JINR Scientific Council. A researcher at the Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics at JINR Zaky Ibrahim demonstrated in a series of computational studies how a universal mathematical approach can enable the design of devices for manipulating waves of various natures. On 24–30 May 2026, the Laboratory of Neutron Physics at JINR will host the 32nd International Seminar on Interaction of Neutrons with Nuclei titled “Fundamental interactions and neutrons, nuclear structure, ultracold neutrons, related topics” (ISINN-32). The participants will discuss various aspects of fundamental and applied neutron physics studies and neutron experiment design.   More in Russian.

From 2 March to 19 April 2026, the JINR University Centre will hold the Wave 14 of the INTEREST (INTernational REmote Student Training) online programme. The participants will work on selected projects under the supervision of scientists from the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The working language of the programme is English.

On 22–23 January 2026, the 62nd meeting of the Programme Advisory Committee for Nuclear Physics (PAC NP) will take place at the JINR International Conference Centre. The event will feature presentations on new projects, research results, the progress of experimental facilities, and plans for the future.   More in Russian.

On 19–20 January 2026, the 62nd meeting of the JINR Programme Advisory Committee for Condensed Matter Physics took place at the International Conference Centre.The PAC members discussed the resumption of the user programme at the IBR-2 Reactor, along with the progress and prospects for upgrading the reactor‘s spectrometer complex.

On 15 January 2025, a delegation from the Saratov Chernyshevsky National State University (SSU) visited the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The university‘s representatives discussed the issues of strengthening collaboration in science and education with the JINR Directorate. In addition, they got acquainted with the scientific infrastructure of the Institute.   More in Russian.

More than 130 defenses, including 13 candidate‘s and 8 doctoral dissertations defended in 2025, were held in the JINR Dissertation Councils after the resumption of their work in 2019. The youngest candidate of science at the Institute today is 24-year-old Ilia Nikolaichuk, a researcher at the Scientific and Experimental Department of Superconducting Magnets and Technologies at the Laboratory of High Energy Physics. In addition, in December, he received the Russian Government Award for young researchers in science and technology together with a VBLHEP JINR senior researcher Mikhail Shandov. On 19–20 January 2026, the 62nd meeting of the Programme Advisory Committee for Condensed Matter Physics will take place at the JINR International Conference Centre. The key topic of the discussion will be the progress and development prospects of the experimental instruments of the IBR-2 Reactor.   More in Russian.

The START (STudent Advanced Research Training) programme invites students and postgraduates to join the JINR studies under the supervision of leading scientists and engineers. Applications for the 2026 summer session are accepted at start.jinr.ru from 1 February until 2 March 2026.   More in Russian.

The NICA Megascience Project achieved an important milestone: on 11 January, at approximately 10:40 PM, a stable xenon beam circulated the red (lower) ring of the NICA Collider for more than 100 microseconds. Deputy Head of the Accelerator Department of the Laboratory of High Energy Physics at JINR Anatoly Sidorin discussed this accomplishment and plans regarding future work at the complex.   More in Russian.

On 1 January, the Republic of Cuba, a JINR Member State since 1976, celebrates its main national holiday – the Liberation Day.

Dear friends, dear colleagues! As the holidays approach, and the year draws to a close, we look back at the path we have travelled and proudly remember the great events that brought us together. The year 2025 was a time of important achievements for JINR.... Today, JINR is a rapidly developing organism. Our strength lies in a close-knit scientific community and the connection of generations, with the wisdom of the Institute‘s experienced scientists combined with the energy and determination of young researchers coming to Dubna from dozens of countries around the world. We remain true to our motto, “Science brings nations together”, which will hold special significance next year.
