Vladimir Korenkov turns 70!

On 26 September 2023, Vladimir Vasilievich Korenkov, Scientific Leader of the Meshcheryakov Laboratory of Information Technologies, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, celebrates his 70th birthday.

Vladimir V.Korenkov has been working at MLIT (LCTA) JINR since August 1976 after graduating from the Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics of Moscow State University. He was engaged in the development and operation of system software for ES computers, took an active part in the creation of software for the “Kristall” facility, participated in the development of the JINR terminal network and interactive access tools for users.

Since 1993, he has been supervising all activities on the development and functioning of the JINR network and information-computing infrastructure. With his direct participation, a huge amount of work to modernise the JINR computer and network infrastructure was performed; as a result, the Institute’s Central Information and Computing Complex became one of the world’s data centres.

Vladimir Korenkov is one of the initiators of activities on the creation of a GRID segment in Russia and its introduction to the European and global GRID infrastructure.

He was a coordinator of the JINR group in the EU DataGRID project (2001-2003), which laid the foundation for the creation of a European GRID infrastructure, a coordinator from JINR in the LCG (LHC Computing GRID), EGEE (Enabling GRID for E-sciencE), “SKIF-Grid”, “GridNNN-National Nanotechnology Network” projects, as well as in several projects with the JINR Member States. For over 10 years, Vladimir V. Korenkov is a coordinator for the development of computing of the RDMS CMS collaboration. He is a member of the Grid Deployment Board (GDB) of the WLCG (Worldwide LHC Computing Grid) project, as well as a member of the International Committee on Future Accelerators Standing Committee on Interregional Connectivity (ICFA-SCIC).

During his work at JINR, Vladimir Korenkov went from an engineer to the director of the Laboratory. In February 2023, V.V.Korenkov was appointed MLIT Scientific Leader.

At present, under the leadership of V.V.Korenkov, work to create and develop at JINR the unique Multifunctional Information and Computing Complex (MICC), which combines supercomputer (heterogeneous), grid and cloud components and data storage systems in order to provide optimal approaches for solving various types of scientific and applied tasks, is underway. His areas of interest encompass the development of the JINR local area network infrastructure and telecommunication channels, investigations in the field of Big Data analytics and quantum computing.

In 2021, under the supervision of Vladimir V.Korenkov, sessions of the mass simulation of MPD experiment events at the NICA Accelerator Complex started on all MICC resources. In the same year, on his initiative, there was launched a project on the integration of three supercomputers into a unified network with the aim of developing the National Research Computer Network of Russia (NIKS): “Govorun” at JINR, the supercomputer of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU) and the supercomputer of the Joint Supercomputer Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ISC RAS).

V.V.Korenkov is the author and co-author of more than 650 scientific papers. Over the past 5 years, he has co-authored 230 papers published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Vladimir Korenkov is a member of the Scientific Council of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia for the priority scientific task “Elaboration of mathematical models and software-algorithmic support for systems with extramass parallelism and of the solution of pilot tasks of science and technology”, a member of the Council for the priority direction of the Strategy for the Scientific and Technological Development of Russia “Transition to digital, intelligent manufacturing technologies, robotic systems, new materials and design methods, creation of systems for Big Data processing, machine learning and artificial intelligence,” a member of the Council of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science for the information and telecommunication infrastructure, information security and supercomputer technologies.

Vladimir V.Korenkov is an expert of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, the Russian Science Foundation, Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia, a member of the editorial board of the “Mathematical Modelling and Geometry” journal, participated in the organization or headed the organizing committee of more than 50 international and Russian conferences, symposia and student schools.

Vladimir Korenkov combines scientific and organizational work with the educational activity. He is the head of the Department of Distributed Information and Computing Systems at Dubna State University. For many years, Vladimir Korenkov delivered lectures to students of the JINR University Centre. In 2013, together with the “Satellite Communications” Federal State Unitary Enterprise, he created the Centre of Geolocation and Space Monitoring at Dubna University. In 2014, Vladimir Korenkov established the Laboratory of Cloud Technologies and Big Data Analytics at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics. At the moment, Vladimir V. Korenkov devotes a lot of effort to organizing a department at the Moscow State University branch in Dubna. Under his supervision, four Ph.D. theses, over 100 diplomas and master’s theses were defended.

The scientific and organizational activities of Vladimir Korenkov have been recognised with a number of prizes and awards. These comprise JINR Prizes of 1998, 2002, 2013, 2021 and 2022 in the field of scientific-technical and applied work, the Certificate of Honor of the Federal Agency for Science and Innovations of the Russian Federation and the Certificate of Honor of the Governor of the Moscow Region for his considerable contribution to the development of science, the strengthening of international scientific-technical cooperation, the Certificate of Honor of the Government of the Moscow Region. He was also awarded the Petro Mogila medal, the highest badge of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the medal “In Commemoration of the 850th Anniversary of Moscow”, the departmental badge of distinction in labor “Veteran of Nuclear Energy and Industry”, the honorary badge of the Government of Mongolia “Forefront Researcher”, the Certificate of Honor from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, JINR’s Letter of Gratitude, the honorary medal of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences “For Achievements in Economics” named after W. Leontief. In 2022, Vladimir Korenkov was awarded the medal of the Order “For Merit to the Fatherland”, II degree, and he has the title “Honored Scientist of the Moscow Region”.

Vladimir V.Korenkov celebrates his anniversary full of creativity and new plans.

Vladimir Vasilievich Korenkov has enough energy not only for science, he is an excellent family man, an attentive husband, a caring father and a kind grandfather. Together with his wife, Irina Pavlovna, they raised their son and daughter with dignity and enjoy their grandchildren’s success.

Dear Vladimir Vasilievich!
The JINR Directorate, the staff of the Meshcheryakov Laboratory of Information Technologies, colleagues and friends heartily congratulate you on your anniversary and wish you new scientific achievements, health, happiness and prosperity!
