Events The triumph of mathematicsOn 1-2 April, the International Scientific Conference "Mathematics in the constellation of sciences" was held at the Moscow State University, organized in honor of the anniversary of the rector of the Moscow University Academician Viktor SADOVNICHY. It was organized by Moscow State University and the Russian Union of Rectors. Over 1100 Russian and foreign scientists and distinguished guests took part in the Conference.Rector of the Moscow State University Academician Viktor Sadovnichy: "The path to mathematical science is difficult, but it is accessible to everyone who strives for it. Our Conference serves as a hymn to mathematics. Recently, I have turned to Chairman of the Russian Government with the initiative to establish Mathematician's Day that will be celebrated on 1 December, the birthday of Nikolay Lobachevsky. The corresponding Government resolution will be issued soon. When it is signed, it will be our common victory. But today is a true triumph of mathematics. The mathematical school of Moscow University, Mechanics and Mathematics and other faculties, demonstrates its power today. Over 1100 participants from 80 constituent entities of Russia and six foreign countries are registered for the Conference. The path to mathematics is very interesting, indeed very difficult, but mathematics in the constellation of sciences can do a lot. And our Conference is an example of this." In his report at the plenary session, Academician Viktor Sadovnichy spoke about his contribution to the development of mathematical science, about his teachers, mentors and colleagues, using numerous examples to illustrate the possibility of using mathematical knowledge in such applied areas as space exploration, demography, medicine, meteorology and others. Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation V.N.Falkov addressed the Conference participants with a welcoming speech: "Today, on the day of the International Scientific Conference "Mathematics in the constellation of sciences", dedicated to the anniversary of the outstanding scientific figure, rector of the Moscow State University Viktor Sadovnichy, I want to note that mathematics is certainly a "beautiful" and fundamental science. The great Russian scientist Mikhail Lomonosov, whose name Moscow State University proudly bears, believed that mathematics should be taught if only because "it puts the mind in order." And the German scientist Carl Gauss gave the world a beautiful phrase about mathematics - the queen of sciences. Indeed, accurate calculations in chemistry, physics, astronomy and other areas of human activity are impossible without mathematics and its laws are the same throughout the world. It serves as the basis for technological and all natural sciences. Training in a number of basic specialties is generally unthinkable without a good knowledge of mathematics. And other disciplines reach a qualitatively new level when mathematics comes into them." Vice-President of Peking University Professor Fan Fan took part in the plenary session of the Conference. "I am very glad that I have the honor to take part in the International Conference "Mathematics in the constellation of sciences". I express my gratitude to the Moscow University for such a platform for exchanging experiences and the opportunity to learn from each other. Mathematics, as an ancient and eternal science, always certainly stimulates and advances the edge of human thought. Education in the field of mathematics began at Peking University in 1913, with the first admission of students to the department of mathematics. Today, we pay special attention to the exchange of scientists between China and Russia. In June 2020, thanks to the support of the Heads of State, Beijing and Moscow universities developed a joint Chinese-Russian mathematical centre, within which talented mathematicians from the two countries discuss the most important issues in the development of mathematics in the modern world. We focus on developing friendship between Beijing and Moscow universities." The key speakers of the plenary session of the Conference were Academician-Secretary of the Department of Mathematical Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Head of the Department of Differential Equations of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University Academician V.V.Kozlov, Scientific Director of the Faculty of Space Research of Moscow State University, Member of the RAS Council on Space Academician V.A.Soloviev, Professor of the Faculty of Global Processes of Moscow State University foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences A.A.Akaev, Professor of the Department of Function Theory and Functional Analysis of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences A.A.Shkalikov, Head of the Department of Differential Geometry and Applications of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University Academician A.T.Fomenko, Head of the Department of Applied Mechanics and Management of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University Professor V.V.Aleksandrov. On 2 April, the Conference was held at breakout sessions. The Conference participants made reports on priority areas of training highly qualified personnel, research and educational activities in the field of mathematics and related branches of science. Focus was on the necessity of improving mathematics education in accordance with the priorities of scientific and technological development of Russia. According to the website msu.ru
