JINR-HSE agreement: start of systematic cooperation

On 29 March, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research and the Higher School of Economics signed an agreement at JINR. The signatories of the document were JINR Director Grigory Trubnikov and HSE Rector Nikita Anisimov. The agreement outlines the key areas of cooperation between the organizations, including joint participation in the main experiments of the NICA Megascience Project, partnership in the field of theoretical physics, information technology, and personnel training.

During the meeting at the JINR Directorate, Nikita Anisimov noted that the Joint Institute and the Higher School have much in common. “Today, we are giving start to a systematic cooperation between our large organizations. Both are ambitious in terms of development; both have a long history and their own culture. There is mutual understanding between our teams. This cooperation has great prospects,” HSE Rector said. He added that despite its name, the university is currently multidisciplinary, with 55,000 students and about 10,000 employees. Many of them are engaged exclusively in research activity.

“Dubna is close to us, we have a lot in common. Now we can not only reorganize certain areas of cooperation, but also arrange a much closer partnership with JINR,” HSE Vice Rector Leonid Gokhberg noted.

“We are glad to have partners who come to us with their experts and tasks that they want to solve based on our infrastructure – it cultivates effective teamwork and creates synergy. Combining our efforts yields great results,” Grigory Trubnikov stressed, highlighting several key areas that are promising for organizing collaborative research.

At the meeting, it was noted that the HSE and BLTP at JINR have a long history of cooperation in mathematical physics. HSE physicists and mathematicians are already contributing to the implementation of the MPD and BM@N Projects at the NICA Complex. The parties discussed the possibility of holding lectures and seminars together, as well as organizing R&D Days at JINR for an in-depth presentation of the JINR and HSE potential in research and development work.

As part of the agreement, the parties plan to conduct joint scientific research utilising the large JINR research infrastructure, including the NICA Complex, and arrange HSE participation in the scientific programme of MPD, SPD and BM@N Experiments. HSE students and employees will take part in computing for the MPD Experiment using the Govorun Supercomputer. Another area for cooperative work will be theoretical and modern mathematical physics and mathematical methods in life sciences.

The document assigns a large role to the joint training of highly qualified scientific personnel, including training through workshops and schools for young scientists.

During the visit to JINR, the delegation of the Higher School of Economics leadership visited the technical sites of the Institute to get acquainted with the MPD Pavilion and the superconducting magnet factory at NICA and the Govorun Supercomputer in the Laboratory of Information Technologies.
