At the end of October 2019, the second Precision Laser Inclinometer (PLI) was installed in the hall of the Northern Mirror of the VIRGO Interferometric Gravitational-Wave Antenna (IGA VIRGO). Now VIRGO has two inclinometers operating simultaneously the task of which is to study the angular noise of the earth’s surface inclination occurring from the passage of surface microseismic waves.   More in Russian.

On Monday, 23 September 2019, the 23rd International School on Nuclear Physics and Applications started in Varna, Bulgaria. The School is organized by the Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences with the support of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. August 6, 2019 (San Francisco) – The Selection Committee of the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics today announced a $3 million Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics shared between theorists Sergio Ferrara (CERN), Daniel Z. Freedman (Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University), and Peter van Nieuwenhuizen (Stony Brook University). The three are being honored for “the invention of supergravity, in which quantum variables are part of the description of the geometry of spacetime.”   More in Russian.

The XXI Mendeleev Congress on General and Applied Chemistry was launched on 9 September 2019 in St. Petersburg. The Congress is a key event of the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements in Russia and is held under the supervision of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). About 3,000 people, including 300 foreign scientists from 51 countries, including Nobel laureates, take part in the event. More than half of the participants are young scientists.   More in Russian.

As part of the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements 2019, the Conference on the Chemistry and Physics of Heavy Elements (TAN) taking place in Wilhelmshaven, Germany from the 25th to the 30th of August, brought together the discoverers of new chemical elements in a unique historical gathering. Researchers from Germany, Russia and Japan, who have added new elements to the periodic table in recent years, met at the international congress.   More in Russian.

The South Pole Observatory is being upgraded with participation of Germany. The IceCube detector is being extended to also measure lower energies and, hence, the properties of neutrinos with so far unreached accuracy. The key element of the multi-ton magnet was delivered to the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR, Dubna). The element is the basis of the multipurpose detector MPD being constructed in the frames of the mega-science project NICA. In the frames of celebrations of the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements, the Internatinal Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and the European Young Chemists’ Network (IYCN) honored a diverse group of 118 outstanding younger chemists from around the world to be selected for the Periodic Table of Younger Chemists. The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research pays much attention nowadays to the issue of training young specialists in the light of the implementation of mega-projects. For this aim, the Institute establishes JINR-based departments in leading universities of the country. From 1 to 5 July 2019, JINR took part in the 11th World Conference of Science Journalists (WCSJ) in Lausanne. It is the largest event held once in two years that is one of the rare opportunities for specialists in the PR and outreach fields to discuss the latest tendencies and projects of the field. The International Conference «Modern Problems of Radiation Genetics» organized by the Laboratory of Radiation Biology JINR, RAS Scientific Council for Radiobiology, and the Radiobiological Society of the Russian Academy of Sciences was held in Dubna. Experimental data on mechanisms of the development of genetic and epigenetic changes in organisms exposed to various doses of ionizing radiation was presented at the Conference. On 27 June 2019, the last meeting of the historic Dissertation Council Д720.001.02 was held in the equally historic Conference Hall of the Veksler and Baldin Laboratory of High Energy Physics where such outstanding scientists as Academician L. D. Landau, A. B. Migdal, Ya. B. Zeldovich and others performed. The Council was established by V. I. Veksler and then was headed by Academician A. M. Baldin for about 30 years. For the last 18 years, the Council was headed by Prof. A. M. Malakhov. The meeting was the last one as far as JINR obtained the right to award scientific degrees. In the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, the Programme Advisory Committee for Condensed Matter Physics approved a new theme “Development of the Conceptual Design of a New Advanced Neutron Source at JINR”. This project is of crucial importance for world science: a reactor or a reactor with an accelerator that will be supposed to outmatch similar facilities. On 4 June 2019, a defence of graduation theses by Master students of the JINR-based Department of Information and Nuclear Technologies (INT) was held in the St. Petersburg State University. During the pre-degree practice and preparation of graduation theses, students demonstrated high-level professional preparedness and solved complicated practical tasks aimed at the successful development of the NICA project. On 5 June 2019, a delegation of the China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE) headed by CIAE Director Wan Gang visited the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. It was the second visit of Wan Gang to Dubna. In August 2018, a meeting of CIAE and CNNC (China National Nuclear Corporation) representatives with the JINR Directorate was held at which an opportunity of organization of a scientific forum dedicated to the memory of Prof. Wang Ganchang was discussed as one of the ways of cooperation extension.   More in Russian.

On 31 May 2019, a regular regional stage of the international youth conference “Falling Walls Lab” was held in the JINR Visit Centre. Researchers from Sweden’s Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg present a new method which can double the energy of a proton beam produced by laser-based particle accelerators. The breakthrough could lead to more compact, cheaper equipment that could be useful for many applications, including proton therapy.   More in Russian.

The ХХIII International Scientific Conference of Young Scientists and Specialists of JINR AYSS-2019 was held from 15 to 19 April 2019 in the Laboratory of Information Technologies JINR. The European Physical Society (EPS) announced presentation of awards in the fields of high energy and particle physics for 2019 to CDF and DZero collaborations for the discovery of t-quark and a detailed study of its properties. On 25 March 2019, the session of the Committee of Plenipotentiaries of the governments of the JINR Member States, a superior governing body of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, was held. Annually, on 25 March, a professional holiday of cultural workers is celebrated in Russia, a holiday of creative professions and artists as well as protectors and popularizers of cultural heritage. On 21 March 2019, graduate class students of the Alexandre Dumas French Lyceum of Moscow accompanied by their teachers and science cooperation officers of the French Embassy for Scientific Cooperation in Moscow visited the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. It became the third visit of representatives of this educational institution to the Institute: the students had already been to JINR in 2017 and 2018. The LHCb collaboration at CERN has seen, for the first time, the matter–antimatter asymmetry known as CP violation in a particle dubbed the D⁰ meson. The finding, presented today at the annual Rencontres de Moriond conference and in a dedicated CERN seminar, is sure to make it into the textbooks of particle physics.   More in Russian.

On 11 – 13 March 2019, 14 graduate students and 3 teachers from the Science Education Center “HEMDA” (Tel Aviv, Israel) visited JINR. The 15th Winter School on Theoretical Physics «Complex Systems and Advanced Materials» is being held from 28 January to 1 February 2019 in the Bogoliubov Laboratory of Theoretical Physics JINR. The Licensing and Intellectual Property Department of JINR announces that on 17 January 2019, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research received a patent for the invention “Method of analysis of atomic composition of organic substances and device for its implementation”. On 28 January 2019, Yandex representatives Sergei Chernyshev, Head of the Talent Management, and Andrei Ustuizhanin, Leader of joint Yandex-CERN projects, visited JINR. The aim of the visit was to identify areas of mutual interest and possibilities for cooperation.   More in Russian.

In the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions, the new DC-280 Cyclotron was laucned; the first beam of accelerated heavy ions was produced. 26 December 2018 will go down in history of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research as the birthday of the Factory of superheavy elements.   More in Russian.

On 29 January 2019, a festive opening ceremony of the International Year of the Mendeleev’s Periodic Table of Chemical Elements will be held in France (Paris) in the UNESCO headquarters.

The beginning of a traditional new year eve meeting of the JINR Science and Technology Council, which was held for the 8th time this year, was unusual. It took place in the International Conference Hall on 26 December 2018; its participants met the report by Director of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions S.N. Dmitriev with applause as far as FLNR Director informed the audience that on that day the first beam of accelerated heavy ions at the DC-280 cyclotron was produced.   More in Russian.

On 25 December 2019, a meeting in the JINR Directorate was held. The meeting was devoted to discussion of the progress of cooperation between the Medical Unit #9 and the FMBA of Russia in 2018 and the first results of the recently signed agreement with the Medical Unit #9 on allocation of an additional set of doctors at the expense of JINR for the Institute’s staff.   More in Russian.
