Deputy Scientific Leader of the Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions Mikhail Itkis received the Badge of Honour “For Services to Dubna”. Director of the Laboratory of Information Technologies Vladimir Korenkov and Deputy Director of the Laboratory of High Energy Physics Hamlet Khodzhibagiyan were awarded the titles “Honoured Scientist of the Moscow Region”.   More in Russian.

A scientific team of the Laboratory of Neutron Physics JINR in cooperation with employees of the
Institute of Physics and Technology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences (MAS) has conducted biomonitoring of air in Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia), one of the dirtiest capitals of the world from an ecological point of view. Scientists used moss biomonitors and identified 16 chemical elements in their samples. Not only has the study allowed specialists to discover that the content of elements in mosses was different at different times of the year, but it has also identified the main sources of pollution.   More in Russian.

On 17 – 18 December 2022, a JINR delegation led by a Special Representative of the Director of the Institute for cooperation with international and Russian scientific organizations Boris Sharkov, took part in the Forum for Foreign Graduates of Soviet and Russian Universities, Representatives of the Education System in the Middle East and Africa in Cairo, organized by the Federal Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States, Compatriots Living Abroad, and for International Humanitarian Cooperation (Rossotrudnichestvo).   More in Russian.

Last week, scientists of Institute for Nuclear Problems of Belarusian State University (INP BSU) reported on the results of the first low-temperature tests of a niobium superconducting resonator. These tests allowed them to observe the phase transition to a superconducting state.The work was carried out by order of the Joint Institute within the framework of the NICA Megascience Project.   More in Russian.

On 23 December, a Christmas organ concert “Bach and the Music of Paris Cathedrals”, sponsored by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, took place at the Choir School for Boys and Young Men. The concert showed that even in turbulent times, cultural life continues.   More in Russian.

To encourage improvement of professional level and to stimulate creative activities of teachers who implement educational activities on subjects and techniques necessary for training personnel for JINR, as well as to encourage the best Dubna teachers, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research announces an annual city contest of school teachers and teachers of additional education for JINR grants.
The JINR Directorate invites teachers of Dubna schools to participate in the JINR grant competition 2023.The deadline for applications is set on 24 February 2023.   More in Russian.

On 23 December, the last meeting of the JINR Science and Technology Council was held in the JINR International Conference Hall in a mixed format. Chairman of the Council Rostislav Jolos opened it. Academician Alexey Rozanov, Head of the LRB JINR Astrobiology Sector, has won the Demidov Prize 2022, one of the most prestigious Russian awards for scientists. Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Demidov Scientific Foundation Gennady Mesyats announced the winner at the press-conference at the Ural TASS Information Center.Academician Rozanov was awarded the Demidov Prize in the category “Biology” for his significant contribution to the development of paleontology.   More in Russian.

On 12 – 14 December, a JINR delegation visited Tomsk Polytechnic University. The business programme of the visit started with the opening of the JINR Information Centre and working meeting with the TPU management. Both the possible activity directions of the infocentre and prospects of cooperation between JINR and TPU in the field of scientific research and personnel training were set.   More in Russian.

Results have been announced of the JINR Prize Competition for young scientists and specialists 2022 held on 7 December 2022. Works selected by the programme committees of two conferences (Alushta-2022 and AYSS-2022) took part in the competition.   More in Russian.

The JINR Publishing Department issued a book “Yulian Aramovich Budagov… promised to live to 100” by Director of the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems Vadim Bednyakov. The book was written in memory of a talented scientist, world-class experimental physicist, organizer of science, Professor Yulian Aramovich Budagov.   More in Russian.

In early December, JINR specialists installed a compact precision laser inclinometer in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. This will make it possible to register seismic activity and predict volcanic activity in the region. Scientists have already started monitoring seismic activity in the city and are receiving earthquake signals.   More in Russian.

On 19 December, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research pays tribute to the memory of the outstanding Czechoslovak theoretical physicist Václav Votruba, one of the two first Vice-Directors of JINR (19.12.1909 – 11.09.1990). He is considered the first Czechoslovak scientist engaged in quantum physics and systematics of elementary particles, as well as the founder of the theory of elementary particles in the country.   More in Russian.

On 14 December, the first Sber Scientific Prize was presented at the Sberbank headquarters. The world-famous scientist, FLNR JINR Scientific Leader, RAS Academician Yuri Oganessian won the Prize for fundamental work on the synthesis of superheavy elements and contribution to the formation of the accelerator experimental basis that provide the prospect for revolutionary nuclear technologies.   More in Russian.

On 16 December, the Republic of Kazakhstan, a JINR Member State, celebrates one of its main national holidays – the Independence Day. The JINR-Kazakhstan cooperation has a long, very successful history. The Republic of Kazakhstan, as part of the USSR, joined the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research since its foundation in 1956. Since 1992, Kazakhstan has been cooperating with JINR as an independent state. The community of Kazakhstani young scientists and specialists is one of the biggest in JINR.   More in Russian.

On 16 December, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research celebrates the birthday of world-famous theoretical physicist, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor, Academician of RAS Albert Nikiforovich Tavkhelidze (16.12.1930 – 27.02.2010). Albert Tavkhelidze worked in Dubna from 1956 to 1970 and worked his way up from researcher to Deputy Director of the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics JINR.   More in Russian.

On 14 December, the second workshop of the cycle “Elementary Particle Physics and Space Physics” dedicated to the topical problem of modern science and technologies was held at the Institute of Cosmophysics of NRNU MEPhI. Director of the Laboratory of Information Technologies JINR Vladimir Korenkov presented a report “Integration of distributed and parallel computing for large-scale scientific projects”.   More in Russian.

Scientists of the Joint Institute together with colleagues from the Institute for Nuclear Research of RAS (INR RAS) have extracted a new species of extremophilic bacteria from subsurface water in an unused cross-passage of the
Baksan Neutrino Observatory of INR RAS. The species is able to withstand high concentrations of heavy metals and to grow using C1 compounds as a carbon source. In the long term, this bacterial species can be used to purify soils and wastewater from heavy metals and also to recover biomass using an inexpensive carbon source methanol.

On 12 December, an Information Centre of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research opened for Tomsk scientists, students, and schoolchildren at Tomsk Polytechnic University. The Centre will become an “information window” into the Institute’s work and achievements of Russian and world science. On 6 December, a joint meeting of Bureau of Preventive Medicine Section of RAS Department of Medical Science and Radiobiological society of RAS was held at the site of the Burnasyan State Medical Centre of FMBA of Russia chaired by RAS Academician Vitaly Zverev. Chairman of the RAS Scientific Council on Radiobiology, Scientific Leader of the Laboratory of Radiation Biology JINR, Corresponding member of RAS Evgeny Krasavin, who took part in the meeting, was awarded the Honorary Certificate of RAS during the event.   More in Russian.

On 11 December, Victor Anatolievich Matveev, an outstanding theoretical physicist and a science organizer, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, JINR Scientific Leader, turns 81.

On 10 December, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research celebrates the birthday of one of its founding fathers – the renowned experimental physicist of the Polish AS Henryk Niewodniczański (1900–1968). He was member of the
JINR Scientific Council in 1956 – 1968. At his suggestion, the Department of Nuclear Spectroscopy and Radiochemistry was established at the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems JINR.   More in Russian.

Founded in 1970, the review journal Physics of Elementary Particles and Atomic Nuclei, brief name Particles & Nuclei, is published by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna. This is the most influential physical review journal in Russia.   More in Russian.

On 7 December, a presentation of memoirs of a chief researcher at the Laboratory of Neutron Physics JINR Evgeny Pavlovich Shabalin was held at the JINR Museum of History of Science and Technology. Scientific results of one of the creators of the IBR-2 High-Flux Pulsed Research Reactor, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor Shabalin were awarded the USSR State Prize and the Russian Federation National Award in Science and Technology. In the book of memories published by the JINR Publishing Department and named “On the ship of your dream: notes of a reactor specialist”, the author presented his life in colours and also spoke in an understandable way about reactors on fast neutrons, which operated, are operating, and are planned to be constructed at JINR.   More in Russian.

In 2022, the JINR Student Programme began its work under the new name START (short for STudent Advanced Research Training). On 25 November, another Session of the Programme attended by 47 students from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Egypt, India, Russia, Serbia, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan came to its end. 57 JINR specialists supervised students’ work on the projects.   More in Russian.

At the end of November, 12 schoolchildren from the Kamchatka region, winners of the Vitus Bering – 2022 Complex Regional Olympiad on natural sciences, visited the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. During the three days spent in Dubna, the students visited the JINR laboratories, got acquainted with the ongoing scientific projects, took part in a workshop on programming, and listened to a number of lectures by JINR specialists.   More in Russian.

On 30 November, a memorial seminar dedicated to memory of the outstanding scientist and science organizer Academician V. G. Kadyshevsky was held at the JINR Museum of History of Science and Technology. For the seminar, an exhibition presenting the biography of Vladimir Georgievich was opened in the museum for staff members of the Joint Institute and citizens.   More in Russian.

20 schoolchildren of grades 8-11 from the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (YaNAO) are doing an internship at JINR this week. The trip to the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research was their reward for winning at the Municipal stage of the All-Russian School Olympiad.   More in Russian.

A sociological survey of the JINR staff members is being carried out again in the Joint Institute. This survey is being conducted for the second time already. It is aimed to assess the level of social satisfaction of the JINR personnel.

On 2 December, as part of the 2nd Young Scientists Congress held in Sochi, a session “Development of Popular Science Tourism: First Results and Prospects” took place. The Joint Institute is among the scientific centres where you can get acquainted with activities of Russian researchers and scientific infrastructure. Providing access of the general public to science objects, as well as issues of excursion programmes and education of tour guides were among the topics of discussion. The launch of the Mendeleev Tour project in the field of scientific tourism was discussed. Subsequent to the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of 17 November 2022 No. 830 “On presenting state awards of the Russian Federation”, the following JINR scientists were awarded the Medal of the Order “For Merit to the Fatherland”, 2nd class for their contribution to science development and longstanding hard work:

On 1 December, the second Congress of Young Scientists started at the Sirius Art and Science Park in Sochi. A JINR delegation is taking part in it. Young employees of JINR are involved in discussions on the most currently important topics. 101 germanium detectors were installed in the LEGEND experiment in the Gran Sasso Laboratory in Italy. The mass of the enriched isotope Ge-76 exceeded 100 kg for the first time ever. The collaboration achieved such results with the active participation of the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems JINR staff members. The participants carried out the preparatory work necessary for a full-scale launch of the experiment.   More in Russian.

On 30 November, a festive awarding ceremony of diplomas on conferring academic degrees took place in the big hall of the JINR Scientists’ Club. Chairman of the Qualification Committee of the Institute Victor Matveev, Deputy Chairman of the Qualification Committee Alexander Sorin, and Scientific Secretary Oleg Belov congratulated diploma recipients. By tradition, the event had a festive atmosphere. Guests and scientific secretaries of Dissertation Councils, in which defences were held, took part in the ceremony.   More in Russian.

1 December marks the Great Union Day of Romania. Romania was one of the founder states of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in March 1956. Since then Romania has been one of the active JINR Member States in terms of the volume of participation in JINR activities, joint research, as well as scientific and technological relations.

Egypt that are doing an internship at the National Research University “Moscow Power Engineering Institute” on the educational track “Current problems of the electric power industry” went on an excursion to the Joint Institute.

Research in the field of life sciences will be carried out, radiation-resistant and protective materials will be tested, and elements of equipment for spacecraft will be developed at heavy charged particle beams of the NICA Complex. It will contribute to the creation of the Russian orbital station in future.Target laboratory site for conducting joint works at the NICA Accelerator complex is being created based on the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. It is being constructed by the leading organization in Russia in space biology and medicine, responsible for the realisation of the biomedical research programme and experiments on board of the Russian segment of ISS, The Institute of Biomedical Problems of RAS (IBMP RAS).   More in Russian.

A joint development by employees of the Laboratory of High Energy Physics and the Laboratory of Radiation Biology has won the youth competition organized by JINR and the Special Economic Zone “Dubna” in the nomination “Operating construction”. JINR scientists have developed a measuring module and software to analyse the muscular atrophy of small laboratory animals. The new measuring complex is many times cheaper than its analogues. As for its software, it allows recording the values of the device in dynamics.   More in Russian.

Scientists of the Laboratory of Neutron Physics JINR and Saratov State University plan to conduct biomonitoring of the atmospheric pollution in the region. Investigations have already been planned to study the atmospheric aerosol, which fell in the Saratov Region this spring. In addition, the possibilities to prepare theses of the SSU students on ecological topic under the supervision of FLNP JINR scientists are being discussed.   More in Russian.

During the current session at the NICA Accelerator complex an important result was achieved, the first circulation of xenon ions in the high-intensity Nuclotron in the history of the project. Participants of the project expect that the
current commissioning cycle will be the key before the entire injection complex is put into operation as a completed element of the NICA Project.   More in Russian.

Sergei Merts, Candidate of Physics and Mathematics, a senior researcher of the Laboratory of High Energy Physics has become the winner of the prestigious All-Russian Award “For Loyalty to Science”. The Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov presented the award in the nomination “Science is fashionable” to the scientist. The festive awarding ceremony took place on 24 November in Moscow at the Zaryadye Concert Hall.

On 24 November, the 12th meeting of the Joint Coordination Committee on the cooperation between the
Arab Republic of Egypt and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research cooperation was held on the sidelines of the
session of the Committee of Plenipotentiaries. It was the first in-person meeting of the Committee after Egypt became a full-fledged Member State at the CP JINR session in November 2021. Participants of the even summed up the results of the year.   More in Russian.

On 23 – 24 November, a session of the Committee of Plenipotentiaries (CP) of JINR was held in Egypt. Holding of the CP JINR session in Egypt commemorates a year since the status of this country in the Institute increased to a full-fledged JINR Member State. At the session, its participants discussed the scientific results of the Institute. In addition, the members of the CP JINR approved the draft of the Seven-Year Plan for the Development of JINR in 2024 – 2030.   More in Russian.

Today, on 23 November, at the session in Egypt, JINR Director Grigory Trubnikov for the first time presented to the Plenipotentiaries of the JINR Member States the draft of the Seven-Year Plan for the Development of JINR in 2024 – 2030. The Members of the Scientific Council approved the draft at the session in September. According to the new Plan, the basic scientific infrastructure projects of JINR harmoniously complement the global landscape of the megasience infrastructure.   More in Russian.

This includes both scientific and administrative services: from resources for users of basic facilities to registration of business trips or tickets, ordering certificates and statements online. On 21 November, a regular meeting of the Finance Committee of the Joint Institute was held. Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation Andrey Omelchuk was elected as new Chairman of the Finance Committee. Participants considered the Institute’s budget for 2023 and the execution of the JINR budget in 2022. The results of the meeting of the Finance Committee will be presented at the upcoming meeting of the Committee of Plenipotentiary Representatives of the Governments of the JINR Member States on 23 – 24 November.

On 23 – 24 November 2022, a meeting of the Committee of Plenipotentiaries (CP) of the Governments of the Member States of the international intergovernmental research organization the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) will be held in Hurghada (Egypt). Egypt has been chosen as the venue for the session of the JINR supreme governing body to commemorate the year since the status of the Arab Republic of Egypt in the Joint Institute raised up to a full-fledged JINR Member State.   More in Russian.

On Monday, 14 November, the opening of the modernised Govorun supercomputer was held at the
Meshcheryakov Laboratory of Information Technologies (MLIT) in the framework of the JINR
Autumn School of Information Technologies. The performance of the supercomputer enhanced by 23,5% and reached 1,1 petaflops level, memory capacity increased.   More in Russian.

On 10 November 2022, the second workshop of directors of JINR Information Centres (IC) was held on the sidelines of the JEMS-21 internship at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. On 9 November, participants of the JEMS-21 training programme held last week took part in a round table “Cooperation between JINR and universities. JINR information centres, educational programmes of

On 14 – 15 November, Rector of North Ossetian State University (NOSU) Alan Ogoev visited JINR. A number of working meetings was held with the leadership of the Institute and Directors of laboratories participating in joint scientific and educational projects. On 15 November, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research pays tribute to the prominent Romanian physicist Horia Hulubei (1896 – 1972). The Academician of the Romanian Academy of Sciences, Corresponding Member of the French Academy of Sciences and the Portuguese Academy of Sciences, he played an important role in the establishment of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research and the development of its international cooperation, being the Plenipotentiary Representative of the Government of Romania to JINR and a member of the JINR Scientific Council.

First elements of electron cooling system (ECS) of the NICA Collider, which will provide its high luminosity in future, arrived at Dubna last week.A hometown of the method is Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics of SB RAS in Novosibirsk, where the precious cargo came from.

JINR scientists conduct research on study of properties of a Higgs boson and search for new physics in the framework of ATLAS collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. With the direct and critical participation of the JINR researchers international collaboration measured properties of the Higgs boson in one of its decay channels. It also studied the possibility of existence of charged or neutral heavy boson, decaying into Wγ or Zγ channels and long-lived particles, decaying into quark-antiquark pair and neutralino. The data obtained are all consistent with the Standard Model of elementary particles expectations.   More in Russian.

On 8 – 10 November, the 10th Collaboration Meeting of the MPD Experiment at the NICA Facility is taking place at the Laboratory of High Energy Physics. The event has brought together more than 150 participants to discuss the project in a hybrid format.   More in Russian.

Scientists from the Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions JINR carried out a cycle of research, which has led to the development of methods for obtaining practically important nanoporous objects – ion-selective asymmetric membranes for nanosensors and membranes for electrodialysis. In particular, this involves a new technique for directly observing the hidden tracks of heavy ions and a method for fabrication of asymmetric nanopores in the right way.Scientists have also gained an in-depth understanding of the properties of track membranes with nanometre pores.   More in Russian.

On 27 October, 10 applicants received diplomas on awarding academic degrees in the big hall of the JINR Scientists’ Club. Valery Lebedev, Anatoly Sumbaev, Dmitry Namiot, Alina Volokhova, Dmitry Gremyachkin, Yahor Dydyshka, Vitaly Yermolchyk, Maxim Zakharov, Mikhail Podoinitsyn, and Zhomart Tyulemisov were among them. On this day, his students and colleagues addressed many warm words to him. On 20 October, an extended guest meeting of the State Duma Committee on Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation was held at the Joint Institute. The key topic of discussions was the potential of science cities and territories with high concentration of intelligence for accelerated scientific and technological development of Russia. The idea to hold the meeting of the relevant Сommittee in Dubna was connected to the opportunity to actually consider work of one of the scientific and innovative sites uniting both fundamental science and high-tech enterprises.

On 19 October, Academician Valery Anatolievich Rubakov passed away at the age of 68. He was an outstanding scientist, one of the world’s leading experts in the fields of quantum field theory, elementary particle physics, and cosmology.    More in Russian.

On 20 October, the State Duma Committee on Science and Higher Education together with the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research will hold an extended guest meeting in Dubna. EG-5 is a long-liver of the Joint Institute’s facilities which remains at the forefront of science due to its unique characteristics. The JINR team took the 1st place in the hackathon on the application of machine learning methods in particle identification tasks. The last three plates of the magnetic circuit have recently been installed at the MPD facility of the NICA Accelerator Complex. Thus the steel cover made of 28 steel plates, each weighing 18 tonnes, is completely assembled. When carrying out this operation, it was important for the team to achieve the highest level of installation accuracy.

On 11 October, an Information Centre of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research opened at the Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) on Russky Island. Operation of the Infocentre will contribute to the international scientific cooperation, especially with the countries of the Asia-Pacific region. On 8 October, a cloud computer cluster was launched at the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan in cooperation with JINR. The cluster enables the integration of the INP AS RUz into the JINR computing network for resource demanding calculations.    More in Russian.

On 29 – 30 September, the 132nd session of the JINR Scientific Council was held. JINR Director Grigory Trubnikov made a report, and the draft of the new Seven-Year Plan for the Development of JINR for 2024-2030 was presented for the first time. On 15 September, another commissioning cycle of the NICA injection complex started at the Joint Institute with a preliminary test phase of the main technological subsystems. The VAST President introduced the new Plenipotentiary Representative of the Government of Vietnam in JINR, Vice President of VAST Tran Tuan Anh. On 27 September, a round table of JINR and the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan took place on the sidelines of the IV International Scientific Forum “Nuclear Science and Technologies” held in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The event became a platform for the discussion of the interaction level achieved in a wide range of cooperation formats. On 27 September, an updated version of the Framework Agreement on Cooperation between JINR and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was signed. The signing ceremony took place at the IAEA headquarters within the 66th annual IAEA General Conference. Work continues at the Laboratory of High Energy Physics JINR on assembling the solenoid of the MPD Detector (Multi-Purpose Detector). One of the two main detectors at the NICA Accelerator Complex will be devoted to studying hot and dense baryonic matter in heavy ion collisions at the collider. This year, the MPD solenoid magnet connection to the control Dewar has been upgraded, the magnet correction coils have been assembled, and many other tasks have been completed. The Republic of Armenia, as part of the USSR, joined JINR since its foundation based on the Agreement signed on 26 March 1956. In the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions, specialists have developed precision high voltage sources for nuclear radiation detectors (semiconductor detectors, based on photomultipliers (PMTs), etc.) on transformers. On 17 September, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research recalls Mikhail Grigorievich Meshcheryakov (1910 – 1994), an outstanding experimental physicist and a talented science organizer, a laureate of USSR state prizes, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, the founder and the first Director of the research centre in Dubna. Staff members of the Laboratory of Neutron Physics JINR in collaboration with colleagues from the Borissiak Paleontological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Tula Regional Museum of Local Lore have identified features of the crystallographic texture of minerals in fossil shells of molluscs. The findings would enable scientists to understand better how extinct molluscs were organized and lived about 165 million years ago.    More in Russian.

The Laboratory of High Energy Physics JINR performs analytical and numerical calculations of beam dynamics at the NICA accelerator complex. Most of these calculations are devoted to studying the motion of heavy ion beams at the NICA Collider Complex under construction. JINR Long-Term Development Strategic Plan up to 2030 provides for the establishment of an innovation centre for experimental and clinical research in the field of proton therapy. Scientists from the Joint Institute, together with specialists from the Limnological Institute of the SB RAS (LIN SB RAS, Irkutsk) and the University of Bucharest (Romania), studied the elemental composition of Baikal sponges collected from sites with different anthropogenic loads. On 24 August, JINR Director Grigory Trubnikov spoke at several sessions of the Technoprom Forum 2022 in Novosibirsk. Thus, under the Forum’s topic “Nuclear technologies and megascience projects”, a session entitled “Unique scientific facilities of the megascience class – drivers of science, human potential, and technology transfer development” was held. The knowledge of the impact of the given surface treatment process is important for preparing better-quality parts of machines, dental prosthetics, and much more. The influence of treatment parameters on the defect structure was investigated in the cycle of studies at JINR. On 22 August, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research celebrates birthday of the founder of experimental neutrino physics Bruno Maksimovich Pontecorvo (1913 – 1993).As the founder of high-energy neutrino physics and neutrino astronomy, he was the first in the world to put forward the idea of neutrino oscillations, which was not confirmed experimentally until nearly 60 years later.The scientific area laid down by Bruno Pontecorvo, neutrino physics, is now one of the priorities for the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems JINR and has become the basis for the JINR neutrino programme. Within its framework, the construction of the Baikal Neutrino Telescope is developing, Laboratory scientists are taking an active part in experiments on neutrino research: GERDA, NOvA, Borexino, JUNO, GEMMA and DANSS, and in other projects significant for world science. The 21st of August is a memorable date in the history of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. One of the founding fathers of JINR, a world-famous theoretical physicist and mathematician Nikolay Nikolaevich Bogoliubov was born on this day in 1909. Academician Bogoliubov was the founder and the first Director of the

On 20 August 1898, Leopold Infeld (1898 – 1968), a famous theoretical physicist and one of the founding fathers of JINR, was born.He was an academician of the Polish Academy of Sciences and some foreign academies, creator of the school of theoretical physics in Poland. The NICA accelerator complex under construction at JINR will accelerate protons and ions of chemical elements of a wide spectrum: deuterons, carbon nuclei, and others, up to gold. At the same time, with the help of the megascience complex, it is already possible to produce various types of particles, including neutrons of much higher energies than those at the IBR-2 reactor and the IRENE facility in the Laboratory of Neutron Physics. High energy neutrons, in their turn, can be employed for comprehensive testing of neutron detectors, which will be used at JINR accelerators and in other world scientific centres.    More in Russian.

The new JINR invention will simplify the assembly process of scintillation detectors of a complex profile. A single detector module can consist of an array of single scintillation cells of any geometric shape. The new method will maintain the accuracy of cell positioning and ensure the repeatability of sizes and mutual positioning of the detector elements.    More in Russian.

Today, on 11 August, JINR Director Assistant for Radiation Medicine, a chief researcher of the Scientific and Experimental Department of New Accelerators of the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems Grigory Shirkov turns 70. Grigory Dmitrievich is Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor, Corresponding Member of the
Russian Academy of Sciences. At JINR, he worked his way up from a junior researcher to the chief engineer of the Institute, holding this position for many years.    More in Russian.

The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research has launched a programme of financial support for retiring employees. The initiative is aimed at supporting employees who have contributed their creative energy and the most able-bodied years to the development of the Institute. After all, many of them came to Dubna right after their graduation and stayed at JINR during the most difficult periods. Only those employees who have faithfully served science for many years will be able to apply for monthly payments. This summer, two large experiments were conducted at the Superheavy Element Factory of the
Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions JINR. One of them resulted in a new synthesised isotope of chemical element 110. The result of the other experiment was the successful preparation for the study of the chemical properties of elements 112 and 114. Currently, the most accurate and informative method for studying the structure of complex protein molecules is the measurement of shifts in the peaks of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of these molecules. Today, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research has all the conditions for creating an NMR spectrometer. Thanks to the new JINR invention, such a spectrometer could register radiation-induced damages to molecules in real-time mode, which will increase the informative value of studies.    More in Russian.

The Joint Institute is actively developing the neutrino programme. The construction of the Baikal-GVD deep-underwater neutrino telescope is underway, JINR scientists are taking part in the international neutrino experiments. This year marks exactly 20 years since the group of JINR scientists joined the search for tau neutrinos in the frames of the international cooperation OPERA. Today, on 8 July, the opening ceremony of the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD 2022) was held in the UNESCO headquarters (Paris, France). The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research is one of the organisers of IYBSSD 2022 and a member of its Steering Committee. The international intergovernmental organisation JINR is the only scientific organisation in the territory of the Russian Federation that has

Today, the 6th International Workshop on Deep Learning in Computational Physics (DLCP-2022) started. The workshop primarily focuses on the use of machine learning in particle astrophysics and high energy physics, but is not limited to this area. Topics of interest are various applications of artificial neural networks to physical problems, as well as the development of new modern machine learning methods for analysing various scientific data, including big data.

On 23-24 June, an international scientific meeting dedicated to the 20th anniversary of JINR’s participation in the programme “Physics with Dimuons” of the CMS experiment at the LHC was held in the International Conference Hall. Staff members of the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems JINR have made a decisive contribution to the installation of the first 60 kg of detectors of enriched ⁷⁶Ge in the LEGEND setup created to search for the ⁷⁶Ge neutrinoless double (Ονββ) beta decay.   More in Russian.

On Wednesday, 29 June, a preliminary review, the so-called Preliminary Design Review (PDR), of the project of the liquid argon system of the near detector ND-Lar DUNE took place. This is the stage of official approval of the technical framework of the project, as well as quality control of all subsystems. One of them was a light readout system. Employees of the Dzhelepov Laboratory of Nuclear Problems JINR were responsible for the development of it.

The Department of Fundamental and Applied Problems in Microworld Physics is one of the basic departments of Landau Phystech School of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT). Its students and postgraduates are able to intern at the JINR basic facilities and to find a job at the Institute after graduation.   More in Russian.

On 27 June, a delegation of the Embassy of Mongolia to the Russian Federation visited JINR. During the visit, the parties discussed prospects for the Mongolia-JINR cooperation development and paid special attention to the educational field and spread of information about the Institute.   More in Russian.

On 24 June, the 14th expedition of the Arctic Floating University (AFU-2022) started. JINR scientists are taking part in it. The Professor Molchanov research vessel is heading to the Novaya Zemlya Archipelago. Scientific research and the educational programme of expeditions are united by a common topic "The Changing Arctic". The expedition will include lectures by JINR scientists. The Joint Institute has become a participant of this programme as a result of its cooperation with the Northern (Arctic) Federal University (NArFU). Scientists of FLNP JINR in cooperation with scientific centres of Vietnam, carried out studies of unusual types of functional materials that belong to the so-called geometrically frustrated magnetic materials. Just recently, on 14 June 2022, the Physical Review C journal published the article "⁶H states studied in the ²H(⁸He,⁴He) reaction and evidence of an extremely correlated character of the 5H ground state" authored by E. Yu. Nikolskii, I. A. Muzalevskii, A. A. Bezbakh, V. Chudoba, S. A. Krupko, et al. The article is dedicated to the study of the properties of heavy isotopes of hydrogen – ^6,7Н. Using the advantages of beams of radioactive nuclei obtained at the ACCULINNA-2 new fragment-separator of the Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions JINR, the authors have discovered a broad bump at ≈4–8 MeV in the ⁶H spectrum above the four-body decay of this nucleon into ³Н+³n decay threshold.   More in Russian.

The Department of Physical and Technical Systems of the Engineering Physics Institute of the Dubna State University trains bachelors and masters majoring in Electronics and Automation of Physical Facilities. Employees of DLNP JINR have manufactured the equipment for assembling the active target (new SuperFGD type) of the Near Detector ND280 in the T2K experiment in a very short time. The unique SuperFGD target comprises about two million scintillation cubes pierced in three directions by fibres spaced one centimetre.   More in Russian.

On 6 June, the JINR International Conference Hall hosted a joint meeting of the Commission of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia on Economic Policy and the Commission of the Parliamentary Assembly on Budget and Finance chaired by Victor Seliverstov (Belarus) and Sergey Mitin (Russia). Members of the commissions, representatives of financial and control bodies of both states took part in the meeting. On 31 May, the Museum of History of Science and Technology of JINR hosted the presentation of the book “Diaries 1955 – 1975. Founded in 1970, the review journal Physics of Elementary Particles and Atomic Nuclei, brief name Particles & Nuclei, is published by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna. This is the most influential physical review journal in Russia.   More in Russian.

In 2016, CERN approved and adopted for implementation the programme on searching for light dark matter at extracted secondary beams of the SPS accelerator, named as the NA64 experiment. The JINR group, taking part in drafting the proposal and physics motivation of the experiment, is responsible for the development and construction of coordinate detectors based on thin-walled straw tubes.   More in Russian.

28 May is a remarkable day in the history of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. On this day in 1907, a prominent Chinese scientist, a researcher in the fields of elementary particle physics and thermonuclear fusion, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Wang Ganchang (1907-1998) was born. He was the JINR Vice-Director from 1958 to 1960 and one of the JINR founders.   More in Russian.

The Independence Day of the Republic of Azerbaijan has been celebrated in the JINR Member State since the 1990s in honour of the proclamation of independence of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic by the National Council in 1918.   More in Russian.

Humanity has high hopes for nanotechnologies. Industry, energy, space studies, medicine, human rescue, offshore oil production, equipment of athletes – all these and many other industries are already rapidly changing and promise to become even more effective thanks to nanotechnologies. In a science project, it is important not only to get data, but also to be able to process it. The team of the
Laboratory of Information Technologies JINR has developed a data management system for the UN environmental project UNECE ICP Vegetation coordinated by the Laboratory of Neutron Physics JINR. The system was created to simplify typical data operations, but over time it has grown into a complete environmental monitoring platform. JINR has received the patent for a device for resonance charge of capacitor. The authors of the work are Sergey Dolya and Victor Smirnov. A bright patent in 2020 reserved the rights to a similar device. This time, changes made to the device design allow the authors to fully reserve the invention from copying. The modified device design allows obtaining only negative but higher voltage.   More in Russian.

On 4 – 6 May 2022, the Natural Science School took place on the platform of the JINR Information Centre based at Vitus Bering Kamchatka State University (KamGU). On 4 May 2022, the JINR Information Centre was opened on the basis of Vitus Bering Kamchatka State University in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. On 29 April 2022, a JINR delegation headed by Grigory Trubnikov and represented by Sergey Dmitriev, Boris Gikal, Grigory Shirkov, and Sergey Yakovenko visited NIIEFA, St. Petersburg. The goal of the visit was to sign an agreement on the development and production of an accelerator complex based on the MSC-230 superconducting cyclotron for proton radiation therapy of oncological diseases.   More in Russian.

Today, the Republic of Poland, a JINR Member State, celebrates Constitution Day. In the national calendar, this date commemorates 3 May 1791, the declaration day of the first constitution in modern Europe adopted in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth.   More in Russian.

On 28 April 2022, the Workshop “Computational biology and physics” was held, at which issues of scientific cooperation between the Laboratory of Radiation Biology JINR, the Laboratory of Information Technologies JINR, and scientific organisations of Serbia were discussed.   More in Russian.

On 26 April, the opening of the palliative care unit took place in the Dubna Medical Unit No.9 of the FMBA of Russia. The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research took an active part in the creation of that unit helping with repairs and room equipment. JINR Scientific Leader Academician Victor Matveev, as well as a number of representatives of the Institute’s management, took part in the opening ceremony.   More in Russian.

Registration for the Workshop “Element 105” has opened that will be held from 16 to 26 July 2022 in the frames of the Summer School (earlier the School “Russian Journalist”) in the “Volga” recreation centre not far from Dubna. Students, postgraduates, and graduates of courses in natural sciences and engineering aged 18 – 25: physicists, biologists, radiobiologists, programmers, electronics engineers, and engineers are invited to take part in the event.

Radiation geneticists of the Dzhelepov Laboratory of Nuclear Problems JINR have compared two different approaches to the evaluation of genetic consequences in the offspring of irradiated parents. It has revealed that results of classical analysis of inherited radiation induced mutations in individual genes can be obtained much faster and more fully using next-generation genome-wide sequencing. The results of this comparative analysis were presented at the seminar “From genetic research to next-generation genome-wide sequencing in radiation genetics” on 20 April.

27 April marks the Freedom Day of the Republic of South Africa (RSA), an Associate Member of the Joint Institute. The JINR-RSA cooperation, which started from exchanging the first scientific visits in 1993, has expanded into the associate membership of South Africa in the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in 2005. Joint work with the RSA is currently being conducted on 17 topics of the JINR Topical Plan dealing with each of the research main areas at the Institute.   More in Russian.

Today, the Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics JINR has launched the 5th International Conference “Condensed Matter Research at the IBR-2” (CMR@IBR-2). Participants are discussing the IBR-2 pulsed reactor, plans for its upgrade, as well as a range of research conducted at the facility.   More in Russian.

Scientists from the Sector of Molecular Genetics of the Cell of the Dzhelepov Laboratory of Nuclear Problems JINR investigate the impact of the special protein of tardigrades, which protects these unique creatures from radiation, on model organisms, a fruit fly and human cultured cells. Further, investigations of this kind may facilitate the development of effective methods to protect living beings, including humans, from ionizing radiation.   More in Russian.

On 21 April 2022, the JINR Scientists’ Club hosted a meeting of national experts in scientific diplomacy with the participation of JINR Director G. V. Trubnikov. The Sofia Declaration of the Committee of Plenipotentiaries of the Governments of the JINR Member States has recorded the strengthening role of JINR as a unique integration platform for the development of modern tools in the fields of scientific diplomacy, scientific enlightenment, and cross-cultural exchange.   More in Russian.

On 19 April, a meeting of the Council for Social and Infrastructure Projects for the Development of JINR was held. Tatyana Balueva, an employee of the Department of Sociology and Humanities of the State University “Dubna”, presented to the Council members the main results of a sociological survey on social satisfaction of JINR employees. The sociologist based her conclusions on the results of the survey among the JINR staff, in which slightly more than 500 employees agreed to participate at the end of December 2021 mainly through an online form.   More in Russian.

20 April 2022 marks the 80th anniversary of RAS Corresponding Member Evgeny Aleksandrovich Krasavin, an outstanding radiobiologist, Chairman of the RAS Scientific Council on Radiobiology, Scientific Leader of the Laboratory of Radiation Biology JINR.   More in Russian.

On 18 April, a delegation of the South Ural State University (SUSU) headed by Rector Alexander Shestakov got acquainted with the infrastructure of MLIT and LRB. The delegation also included SUSU Vice-Rector Leonid Sokolinsky, General Director of PAPILON Systems LLC Pavel Zaitsev, and Technical Director of LLC TRIDIVI Andrey Valik. On 18 April, a one-day International Symposium on Problems of Simulation of Biomolecular Complexes and Interaction with Materials Nanoparticles was held at the Yerevan State University in connection with the

On 15 April, the Laboratory of High Energy Physics JINR celebrated the 65th anniversary of the Synchrophasotron’s launch. Leading scientists of the Laboratory presented a number of reports at the seminar. Speakers talked about the construction history of this breakthrough for its time machine from the construction phase to the present days when the torch of time was passed to the Nuclotron. It was based on the Synchrophasotron and became the basis for the creation of the NICA complex.   More in Russian.

The Central Bank of Armenia has introduced a commemorative coin dedicated to the chemical element oganesson (Og) since 14 April 2022. The coin is made of silver and its nominal value is 1,000 drams. The issue of 500 coins has been minted by the Polish Mint.The coin weighs 33.6 grams and has a diameter of 40 mm. The obverse portrays the chemical element oganesson (Og) and the JINR emblem. The reverse displays a sculptural portrait of Academician Yuri Tsolakovich Oganessian (sculptor – Gh. Chubaryan, 1979). The author of the design is Vardan Vardanyan.

In April of the current year, two remarkable anniversaries were celebrated at JINR at once:

From 14 to 16 April, a delegation of the Joint Institute headed by JINR Director RAS Academician Grigory Trubnikov visits the Republic of Armenia by invitation of the National Academy of Sciences of the country (NAS RA). Institute’s representatives took part in the extended meeting of the Presidium of NAS RA on the issues of cooperation between scientific centres of the Republic of Armenia and JINR. Today is a special day for the Joint Institute. On 14 April, we congratulate Yuri Tsolakovich Oganessian on his birthday. He is our pride, living legend, discoverer of heavy elements of the Periodic Table, one of which – element 118 – was named after the scientist. Last year, Yuri Tsolakovich became one of the two laureates of the UNESCO-Russia Mendeleev International Prize for his significant contribution to the development of basic sciences.

On 5 – 6 April, representatives of the Northern (Arctic) Federal University named after M.V. Lomonosov (Arkhangelsk) visited the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The main purpose of the delegation’s visit was to search for new directions for expanding cooperation with JINR in connection with the recent opening of the JINR Information Centre at NArFU. On 24 March, a Practice for students and young scientists from the Arab Republic of Egypt at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, the first International Student Practice organised by the JINR University Centre after a break caused by pandemic restrictions, was concluded.   More in Russian.

Attention to science increased during the pandemic and supported by the Year of Science and Technology in Russia resulted in many new solutions, events, and cooperation forms. The International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development takes up this baton. Two months ago, a new format of scientific news discussion appeared at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. It is the BLTP Journal Club. Six meetings were held online.

The 16th International Conference “Parallel Computational Technologies” (PCT’2022) took place in the the Meshcheryakov Laboratory of Information Technologies JINR. On 23 and 25 March, JINR staff members Semen Gurskiy and Elena Badawy took part in the English Language Week in the Physics and Mathematics Lyceum named after Academician V. G. Kadyshevsky. The lectures in English on the history of the Joint Institute and the development of nuclear research in our country, as well as on the treatment of oncological diseases by proton therapy were presented to 7-10 grade students.   More in Russian.

On 25 – 27 March 2022, visits to the interactive exhibition “JINR Basic Facilities” located in the Culture Centre “Mir” were organised for Dubna citizens. The events were dedicated to the 66th anniversary of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. On 24 March, a musical evening “Happy Birthday, our beloved Institute!” dedicated to the JINR Foundation Day for JINR employees and their family members was held in the JINR Universal Public Library. In March, students of the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Kamchatka State University named after Vitus Bering were sent for internship to the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The academic exchange has happened thanks to the JINR Information Centre established in October 2021 on the basis of the University. In February, a researcher of the Laboratory of Neutron Physics JINR Yulia Aleksiayenаk successfully defended her candidate’s dissertation dedicated to the ecological studies of air in the Republic of Belarus, a JINR Member State. The investigation conducted in one of the leading applied research fields of JINR was about bryoindication, that is the method of complex ecological diagnostics with the use of moss as biomonitors.   More in Russian.

On 11 March, Director of the National Research Centre of Nanotechnologies (NRC) of the University of Britain in Egypt Professor Medhat Ibrahim accompanied by Advisor to the Directorate of the Laboratory of Neutron Physics JINR M. V. Frontasyeva visited the Faculty of Chemistry of Moscow State University. Professor Ibrahim is an active participant of the cooperation with the Joint Institute and is currently supervising the Student Practice for young scientists from Egypt, a JINR Member State, from its side.   More in Russian.

On Sunday, 13 March, Institute’s staff members and members of their families presented handmade items at the
Fair of JINR Craftsmen “Meeting spring together” in the Blokhinstev Public Library. Ceramics, watercolour drawings, wooden tableware, felt miniatures, and original books – this is not the full list of items presented at the Fair. On 11 March, a joint meeting of JINR Working Group on interaction with MSU, the branch management, and Dubna departments of the Faculty of Physics of MSU was held in Dubna. Director of JINR Grigory Trubnikov headed the JINR party at the meeting. Participants discussed in detail the branch preparation for the first students’ admission, the development of educational programmes, as well as measures of additional financial support for students.

Scientists from the Laboratory of Neutron Physics JINR have found that ordinary brewer’s yeast can act as an effective sorbent for treatment of wastewater contaminated with heavy metals. The study has shown that this technique is also cost-effective and environmentally friendly. More in Russian.

The general contractor of the NICA complex STRABAG JSC and the JINR Directorate discussed the status of the construction and installation works at a meeting on 5 March.   More in Russian.

Specialists of the Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics JINR within an international scientific group have conducted detailed structural studies of unique optical materials – silicate glasses doped with Cu₂Se and europium nanoparticles. As a result, they found out that a special region is formed around the copper selenide nanoparticles, which provides the basis for influencing the optical properties of such glass materials.   More in Russian.

At the end of February, the JINR Scientific Council session was held. Director of JINR Grigory Trubnikov and Vice-Director of JINR Latchesar Kostov commented on the concept of the new Seven-Year Plan for the Development of JINR that was presented at the session. They also spoke about the research in the fields of life science and condensed matter physics planned within its framework, the development of the existing and planned for creation new experimental facilities.   More in Russian.

Within the third commissioning cycle of the NICA injection complex, specialists of the Veksler and Baldin Laboratory of High Energy Physics JINR have reached stable beam acceleration modes at all elements of the accelerator cascade at the injection complex. The first in-person meeting of the JINR Women’s Committee with the participation of Director of the Institute Grigory Trubnikov was held on the eve of 8 March. At the meeting, participants discussed the tasks and plans of the committee for immediate and long-term perspective. They made suggestions on the directions of its activities. On 4 March, the 115th anniversary of the birth of Vladimir Iosifovich Veksler (1907–1966) is celebrated. He was a prominent experimental physicist, one of the JINR founding fathers, the first Director of JINR Laboratory of High Energies, and academician. He was also one of the founders of accelerator technology in the USSR and creator of the legendary JINR Synchrophasotron (10 GeV).   More in Russian.

The Centre for Collective Use “Siberian Circular Photon Source” of the Boreskov Institute of Catalysis of the Siberian Branch of RAS (CCU “SKIF”) and the Meshcheryakov Laboratory of Information Technologies JINR started their cooperation on the creation of the IT infrastructure of the CCU “SKIF” and professional training of specialists to ensure its operation.   More in Russian.

The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research celebrated its 65th anniversary in 2021. The jubilee year was full of scientific events.
2021 at JINR: the large solenoidal magnet was successfully installed at the MPD multi-purpose detector, the technical launch of the Booster-Nuclotron channel was done, the first superconducting magnet was installed in the tunnel of the NICA collider ring, the first experiments were conducted at the Superheavy Element Factory, a ceremonial launch of the largest in the Northern hemisphere deep underwater neutrino telescope Baikal-GVD was held.   More in Russian.

On 24 February 2022, the Meshcheryakov Laboratory of Information Technologies hosted 3-5-year students and teachers of the Department of Automated Systems for Computing Complexes of the Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics of Lomonosov Moscow State University. All the basic facilities of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research are operating in a regular, planned mode. They include the following elements of the JINR scientific infrastructure: the IBR-2 fast pulsed reactor of periodic operation and the entire spectrometer complex, the Nuclotron accelerator, the U400 and U400M cyclotrons, the DC-280 cyclotron, which is the basic facility at the Superheavy Element Factory of the DRIBs complex, the IREN resonance neutron source, the Phasotron cyclic accelerator of heavy charged particles, as well as the Multifunctional Information and Computing Complex.   More in Russian.

On Tuesday, 1 March, an extended meeting of the Council of Heads of national groups was held in the International Conference Hall with the participation of the JINR Directorate. Participants noted that the issue of the link between the staff of the Institute with the Directorate has been of special importance since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. It remains relevant now, given the dramatic situation in the world in recent days, especially in a number of the JINR Member States. For the first time, a representative of Egypt, which joined the Institute as a Member State in November 2021, took part in such a meeting as the appointed Head of the national group.   More in Russian.

After a long break due to the unfavourable epidemiological situation in the world, a full-time Student Practice for 24 students from the Arab Republic of Egypt, organised by the JINR University Centre, began on 1 March. The initiator of the current Practice was Egypt that had attained the full membership in the Joint Institute in November 2021. The Egyptian side made a serious preliminary selection among candidates for the participation in the Practice.   More in Russian.

On 2 March, a prominent scientist Georgy Nikolaevich Flerov (1913-1990) was born. He was Academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences, an author of several scientific discoveries, a founder and the first Director of the Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions JINR.   More in Russian.

Scientists of the Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics JINR have developed and studied bio-hybrid drug nano-complexes based on natural components with antibacterial and anticancer efficacy. The results of these structural and morphological studies may become the basis for obtaining a new generation of drugs in the future that will fight antibiotic-resistant microbes.   More in Russian.

On 26 February, 25 years ago, it was decided to establish the Association of Young Scientists and Specialists of JINR (AYSS) at the organisational meeting in 1997. The JINR Director approved the AYSS Regulation on 14 October 1998. In honour of this date, the JINR University Centre jointly with AYSS have launched a special project.

From 23 February to 28 March, the anniversary photo exhibition dedicated to the memory of Yu. A. Tumanov will be held in the JINR Cultural Centre “Mir”. Yu. A. Tumanov was an outstanding Russian press photographer, a master of scientific photography. According to the figurative expression of Academician Alexei Sissakian (the JINR Director in 2006-2010), the world had seen Dubna through the lens of his camera for many decades.   More in Russian.

On 17 February 2022, the next expedition to construct Baikal-GVD, the deep underwater neutrino telescope of a cubic-kilometre scale, has been launched. During about two months, the Baikal-GVD collaboration intends to deploy two new clusters, repair and upgrade those already installed, and proceed with developing the optical data transmission system within the facility.   More in Russian.

The 55th meeting of the Programme Advisory Committee for Nuclear Physics took place on 27 January online chaired by Professor M. Lewitowicz. The PAC Chairman presented information on the implementation of the recommendations of the previous PAC meeting. JINR Vice-Director S. N. On 24 – 26 February, the 11th robotic tournament CyberDubna-2022 of the Open Verkhne-Volgian Cyber Net will be held online.Teams will remotely control the equipment prepared by the organisers following the proposed requirements (technical specifications) in real time. To do this, participants will need to write the control code and debug it remotely within a limited time. The competitions will use the Arduino platform. On 14 February, a regular international training programme “JINR Expertise for Member States and Partner Countries” started. Despite the difficult epidemiological situation, there were four JEMS cycles last year. And yesterday, the training programme started for the 20th time. Participants of JEMS-20 are heads and specialists from research and educational institutions of Armenia, Slovakia, Serbia. To celebrate the holiday and support the advancement of women in science, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in cooperation with the Physics and Mathematics Lyceum named after V. G. Yesterday, on 6 February 2022, a stable circulation of the carbon ion beam was obtained in the ring of the synchrotron Nuclotron after injection from the Booster. A team of accelerator scientists of the NICA project has been working hard for this result for more than two weeks of intense round-the-clock shifts. Researchers from the Group of Neutron Activation Analysis at the Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics JINR, along with colleagues from the National Research Centre “Kurchatov Institute” and archaeologists from the
Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, are studying the head of an antique sculpture, the work of authorship. The head was found in underwater sediments during the construction of the Crimean bridge. Scientists have grounds to believe that the clay comes from the region of modern Italy.   More in Russian.

On January 26, 2022, a scientific and methodological seminar on applied research at the NICA complex was held at VBLHEP by Department of Scientific and Methodological Research and Innovation. On 31 January, the XVII DIAS-TH Winter School “Supersymmetry and Integrability” will start. The event is organised by the Bogoliubov Laboratory of Theoretical Physics JINR and in the framework of the programme DIAS-TH. A new wave resonator has been developed at JINR. It was created to measure the probability of absorption and scattering of neutrons in the storage ring of cold neutrons at the new research reactor NEPTUNE (IBR-3) being developed at the Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics JINR. The device, with a three-layer planar structure, increases the sensitivity of measurements up to 1,000 times. This allows designing a storage device on a qualitatively new level.   More in Russian.

The RSA-JINR Summer School, hosted by iThemba LABS, is held online and kicked off on Monday, 24 January 2022. It will run over a two-week period, until 4 February.   More in Russian.

In January 2022, the first test run of the unified supercomputer infrastructure based on the National Research Computer Network of Russia (NIKS) was completed. The unified supercomputer network includes the “Govorun” supercomputer, an object of the scientific infrastructure of the JINR Member States –. As its first assignment, an experiment on mathematical modelling was carried out using the unified supercomputer infrastructure for the tasks of the NICA megascience project.   More in Russian.

Due to the worsening epidemiological situation with the incidence of the coronavirus infection COVID-19, according to the Order by JINR Director Grigory Trubnikov No.67 of 24.01.2022, additional measures are introduced at JINR to prevent the spread of COVID-19.Thus, from 25 January to 25 February 2022, the in-person presence at workplaces of employees should be minimised.Admission to the DLNP and VBLHEP sites will not be permitted for employees included in the list of those performing their jobs remotely.   More in Russian.

The current third commissioning cycle, which has started at the very beginning of 2022, is being carried out at the injection complex of the NICA collider that includes two linear and two cyclic superconducting accelerators, namely the Nuclotron and the Booster, as well as the extraction system of accelerated ions from the Nuclotron. On 23 January, one of the most significant stages of the commissioning cycle was completed. The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research received the patent. “The device for forming a sawtooth voltage on capacitor” allows many times increase the performance of the facility it is used for. Thus, the device is expected to be applied at the new MSC-230 proton accelerator designed for the treatment of oncological diseases. In addition to accelerator facilities, the invention may be used for a faster charging of mobile phones and electric vehicles.   More in Russian.

Within the programme of the visit, which took place on 18 January, President of the
National Academy of Sciences (NAS) of the Republic of Armenia Ashot Sagyan met with leaders of the Institute headed by Director Grigory Trubnikov. At the meeting, Ashot Sagyan proposed drafting a roadmap on the development of cooperation between NAS institutes and JINR, as well as expressed interest in holding internships for young scientists from Armenia at JINR and the creation of a network model of student training.   More in Russian.

The JINR University Centre announces the call for applications for the JINR Student Programme held all year round in the offline format. The Programme is intended for Bachelor students starting from their 3rd year of study, Master students, as well as postgraduate students of the 1st year mastering science, engineering, and IT specialties.
Application periods in 2022 are as follows: 17 January – 31 March and 11 May – 31 July.The Programme lasts for 6-8 weeks. The duration of participants’ stay in Dubna is to be agreed upon with the supervisor individually.

The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research is now preparing to commission a new separator of the
Superheavy Element Factory (SHE Factory) in the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions. It is planned that the second Dubna Gas-Filled Recoil Separator, or DGFRS-III, will be put into operation in the first half of 2022.

On 18 January, Director of the Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics JINR Valery Shvetsov performed at the panel discussion “Nuclear Technologies for the Future” at Expo 2020, where he gave a talk about the use of extracted neutron beams for fundamental and applied research at the IBR-2 reactor, the potential of the facility for the world scientific community, and the development of cooperation within the MBIR project.   More in Russian.

On 17 January, the seminar “Structure of the atomic nucleus: yesterday, today…” of Rostislav Vladimirovich Jolos was held at the Bogoliubov Laboratory of Theoretical Physics.These days, a world-famous theoretical physicist, a chief researcher at the Bogoliubov Laboratory of Theoretical Physics, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor Rostislav Vladimirovich is celebrating his 80th anniversary.   More in Russian.

A regular, 55th meeting of the Programme Advisory Committee for Condensed Matter Physics of JINR will take place on 20 – 21 January 2022 in a mixed format chaired by D. L. Nagy. He will open the event by presenting information about the implementation of the recommendations of the previous PAC CMP meeting.

The International Conference “Condensed Matter Research At the IBR-2” (CMR@IBR2) will be held online from 25 to 29 April 2022 and will be dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics JINR. The organising committee of the Conference invites users of the User Programme of the IBR-2 and everyone interested to take part in the event.

On 14 January 2022, JINR Director Grigory Trubnikov took part in the festive opening ceremony of the Russian-Cuban Observatory (RCO) located in the park of the Cuban Institute of Geophysics and Astronomy (IGA, Havana). The event was timed with the Day of Cuban Science and the IGA jubilee.   More in Russian.

On 15 January, Dezső Kiss was born (15.01.1929 – 24.06.2001). He was the third JINR Director, a citizen of the Republic of Hungary, an outstanding physicist and an organiser of science, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Academician of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.   More in Russian.

Today, on 13 January, Plenipotentiary Representative of the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan in JINR, President of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan Bekhzod Yuldashev visited JINR. The aim of the visit was to discuss the state-of-the-art and prospects for the development of the JINR-Uzbekistan cooperation.

The JINR News bulletin is issued 4 times a year and provides information on new scientific results, obtained at JINR Laboratories, on progress in performance of large-scale experiments, on construction of new installations, about discoveries, inventions, etc. JINR social life is presented extensively.   More in Russian.

At the end of December 2021, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research received a patent for the device used for modelling mixed radiation fields at high-energy heavy-ion beams for the purposes of experimental radiobiology.Employees of the Laboratory of Radiation Biology JINR Gennady Nikolaevich Timoshenko and Ivan Sergeevich Gordeev proposed the invention.   More in Russian.

Today, on 11 January 2022, a world-famous theoretical physicist, chief researcher of the
Bogoliubov Laboratory of Theoretical Physics, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor Rostislav Jolos turns 80.The Directorate of the Institute and the JINR multinational staff congratulate Rostislav Vladimirovich on his 80th jubilee and wish him good health, personal happiness, new bright achievements for the benefit of Russian and world science.   More in Russian.

11 January marks the birth of an outstanding Soviet physicist Dmitry Ivanovich Blokhintsev, one of the initiators of the establishment of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research and its first Director.   More in Russian.

On 8 January, the JINR Directorate presented 250 invitations for the Swan Lake performance on the stage of the Cultural Centre “Mir” to doctors of Dubna as a New Year gift. This festive initiative aims to support the JINR’s role as one of the leading city-forming enterprises the key priority of which is social responsibility.   More in Russian.

On 8 January, the Joint Institute pays tribute to the memory of an outstanding Bulgarian physicist Georgi Stefanov Nadjakov (8.01.1897 – 24.02.1981) who made a significant contribution to the development of JINR during the first decades of the Institute’s existence.   More in Russian.

Yulian Aramovich Budagov, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, professor, one of the JINR veteran researchers, a brilliant and talented world-class experimenter physicist, advisor to the Directorate of the Dzhelepov Laboratory of Nuclear Problems, passed away on 30 December 2021.   More in Russian.

1 January marks the Day of the Establishment of the Slovak Republic, a Member State of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research.

On 1 January, the Republic of Cuba, a JINR Member State, celebrates the main national holiday – Liberation Day.
The Institute’s Directorate congratulates Cuban colleagues and partners on Liberation Day and wishes them and their families good health, happiness, well-being, luck, and new professional successes for the benefit of science and progress!   More in Russian.

This is the way the JINR Directorate has decided to support employees who are getting vaccinated. Vaccination and revaccination against COVID-19 are available daily, 24 hours a day in the emergency room of Medical Unit No.9. Vaccination in the medical points at both sites of the Institute will be available again after the new year holidays.
