First JINR Information Centre in international organization opens in Tunisia
On 4 December, the JINR Information Centre and Virtual Laboratory officially opened at the headquarters of the
Arab Atomic Energy Agency (AAEA) in Tunisia. JINR Director Grigory Trubnikov and AAEA Director General Salem Hamdi signed a Memorandum of Understanding after the previous one had expired. The parties concluded they had successfully implemented all the provisions of the 2016 agreement and signed a new, indefinite Memorandum. On the same day, Grigory Trubnikov participated in an AAEA Executive Board meeting and made a report on the Institute’s focus areas. More in Russian.

A study “Development of technology for creating a new composite material with desired medical and biological properties”, in which a researcher at the Centre for Applied Physics of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions at JINR, Candidate of Chemical Sciences Ilia Vinogradov under the guidance of Head of the Sector Alexandr Nechaev, was considered the best at the All-Russian Youth Competition between scientific projects #ВЦЕНТРЕНАУКИ (English “in the heart of science”). On 23 November, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Argentine Republic to the Russian Federation Eduardo Antonio Zuain and Second Secretary of the Embassy and Head of the Political and Scientific and Technological Departments Luciano Javier Liendo visited JINR. JINR hosted School on Physics of Quark-Gluon Matter
From 16 to 20 November 2023, the Autumn School on the Physics of Quark-Gluon Matter took place at JINR. The JINR University Centre and the JINR Basic Department in MIPT “Fundamental and applied problems of microworld physics” organized the event. The School brought together 30 students of 1st-4th year studying elementary particle physics from universities in Moscow, Tomsk, Saint Petersburg, Novosibirsk, and Voronezh. RSF grant competition for young scientists started
Russian Science Foundation has announced that it started receiving applications within the Presidential research projects programme in two categories: initiative research competition for young scientists and youth research groups competition. One of the criteria for the projects is that they should solve the problems of keeping young scientists in the scientific and educational sphere, stimulating scientific mobility, and providing targeted assistance to talented researchers at the beginning of their scientific career. A physics professor of the National Autonomous University of Mexico and a JINR Scientific Council member Ana María Cetto Kramis has won the UNESCO Kalinga Prize for the popularisation of science. Device for controlling light transmission efficiency of optical fibres created at FLNP JINR
Specialists of the Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics, JINR, have developed a device that makes it possible not only to detect defects in wavelength-shifting optical fibers, but also to control whether the material with these defects retains its main function – transmitting capacity. In other words, the new device allows one to understand how defects in fibers affect the loss of light transmitted through them. The patented device was used in the development of two large-area thermal neutron detectors for scientific instruments at the IBR-2 research reactor. More in Russian.

MPD collaboration discussing experiment’s progress in Serbia
On 4 October, the 12th Collaboration Meeting of the MPD Experiment at the NICA Facility started at the
Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences in Belgrade. Reports of the first day of the event have highlighted that the project is successfully overcoming obstacles caused by external circumstances. The firs test launches of the collider are still scheduled for 2024. There is a need to postpone the start of data collection in a collider mode until the middle of 2025. More than 120 specialists from research centres in Bulgaria, China, Egypt, Georgia, Israel, Mexico, Mongolia, Russia, and Serbia participate in the event. More in Russian.

JEMS-23 results: forming basis for new round of JINR-RSA cooperation development
On 15 September, a regular round table with the JINR Directorate summed up the results of the
23rd JINR International Training Programme (JEMS-23). JEMS was specially organized for representatives of universities and research centres of the Republic of South Africa for the first time. The internship was the result of an agreement between JINR and the National Research Foundation of South Africa (NRF) as part of the work of the
Joint South Africa-JINR Coordination Committee. Growing mutual interest in developing cooperation, in particular regarding matters of personnel training, impelled an RSA-only JEMS programme. More in Russian.

Autumn call for JINR International Postdoctoral Programme started
Applications for participation in the JINR Postdoctoral Programme are accepted from 1 October to 1 November 2023. The JINR Postdoctoral Programme is aimed at young scientists specialising in theoretical and experimental particle physics, nuclear physics, relativistic heavy ion physics, condensed matter physics, and radiobiology. The original appointment will be for 1 year, with the possibility to renew it for another 2 years. More in Russian.

On 2-3 October 2023, the Vin&vcirc;a Institute of Nuclear Sciences in Belgrade, Serbia, hosts the
NICA Days 2023 International School. The School is held in a mixed format. To join the event via Zoom, it is enough to register for it. JINR scientist received Cherenkov Prize of RAS
On 19 September, by the decision of the Praesidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Head of the Scientific and Experimental Department of Heavy-Ion Physics at the Laboratory of High Energy Physics at JINR, Alexsander Malakhov, was presented the Cherenkov Prize. He was awarded the prize for a cycle of research in relativistic nuclear physics carried out at JINR and foreign centres and provided the basis for the physical programme of the NICA Accelerator Complex. First winners of OGANESSON Award announced
On 22 September, the first winners of the OGANESSON Award were announced at the 134th session of the Scientific Council of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna. The award was created at the suggestion and expense of RAS Academician Yuri Oganessian and established at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in 2023. The award’s founders are Scientific Leader of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions Yuri Oganessian and JINR.

Creating solid foundation for Institute’s development for next seven-year period
On 21 September 2023, the 134th session of the Scientific Council of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research started. The members of the Scientific Council, international experts from leading scientific organizations and universities, considered the latest scientific results of JINR and the results of the summer meetings of PAC JINR, discussed the revised draft of the Seven-Year Plan for the Development of JINR for 2024–2030, held elections for the position of Director of DLNP at JINR, and approved the appointments of Deputy Directors of MLIT and FLNP. The event was co-chaired by the Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Professor Sergey Kilin.

The members of the Scientific Council will discuss the draft of the JINR Development Plan for the next seven years and elect the Director of the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems. Software for creating digital twins of distributed data processing centres developed at JINR
Employees of the Laboratory of Information Technologies at JINR have developed and registered a software complex for creating digital twins (DTs) of distributed data acquisition, storage, and processing centres (DDPCs). The uniqueness of this program is that DTs created with its help effectively monitor the operation of DDPCs in terms of data flows and related tasks. On 110th anniversary of birth of Bruno Pontecorvo
22 August 2023 marks the 110th anniversary of the birth of an outstanding Italian and Soviet scientist Bruno Pontecorvo. He lived in Dubna for more than 40 years and worked at the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems at JINR. The famous physicist passed away in 1993, but the interest to his life and scientific research has not waned. Books and films about the life of Bruno Pontecorvo continue to be published today. 20 August marks the 125th anniversary of the birth of a famous theoretical physicist, one of the JINR founders Leopold Infeld (1898 – 1968). He was an Academician of the Polish Academy of Sciences and some foreign academies, creator of the school of theoretical physics in Poland. FLNP JINR scientists discovered new magnetic phenomena in heterostructures
Applying the method developed at JINR, scientists of the Laboratory of Neutron Physics managed to detect a number of new magnetic phenomena, which were not previously predicted. The phenomena are connected with the interaction of superconducting and ferromagnetic order parameters. These studies can give great practical results in the development of such areas as superconducting spintronics, nanoelectronics, and superconducting quantum computing. In addition, employing rare–earth elements that they had not previously used, namely dysprosium and holmium, scientists managed to obtain a non-trivial magnetic ordering in layered structures, which gives excellent prospects for obtaining innovative materials. JINR specialists developing and studying compositions of durable cement for radioactive waste storage
A group of scientists at the Laboratory of Neutron Physics at JINR has studied cement samples with various inclusions used for long-term conditioning – one of the key stages of radioactive waste treatment. Experiments with methods of non-destructive microstructural neutron analysis have resulted in the determination of cement matrices with high mechanical stability characteristics. According to the scientists, the obtained results could become a promising basis for further research of cement compositions of new types. More in Russian.

Neutrino oscillations: status and prospects for determination of neutrino mass ordering and leptonic CP-violation phase
The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research is preparing to celebrate the 110th anniversary of the birth of the founder of experimental neutrino physics, one of the JINR founders Bruno Pontecorvo (1913 – 1993). An outstanding scientist was the first in the world to put forward the idea of neutrino oscillations, which was confirmed experimentally only 60 years later.On the eve of this date, a team of authors from the Joint Institute has prepared a review article on this topic.

During the study of soil composition for the presence of potentially toxic metals, a group of scientists from the Laboratory of Neutron Physics at JINR obtained an interesting result. They discovered a correlation between the pollution map and the soil map based on satellite images. According to the researchers, under certain conditions, this correlation can be used to identify areas of massive soil contamination in places where it is impossible to collect samples. Creation of new DC-140 Accelerator gaining momentum at JINR
Specialists continue to create the DC-140 Accelerator Complex at the Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions JINR. The complex is being created to solve applied problems, namely research on solid state physics and surface modification of materials, production of track membranes and testing of electronic component base, etc. On 12 July, specialists completed the installation of the main magnet of the cyclotron. VII Summer School “Physics. Mathematics. IT” taking place with JINR participation at University “Dubna”
On 16 July, the State University “Dubna” hosted an opening of the VII Summer School “Physics. Mathematics. IT”. The university and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research were the co-organizers of the event. The School gathered 60 senior pupils from 26 cities of Russia. During ten days of the event, its participants will get acquainted with university teachers, scientists, engineers, IT specialists, visit the JINR laboratories and the NICA Collider, learn about what projects trainees and graduates of the university are working on. In addition, schoolchildren will have to work on scientific projects under the guidance of the best theoretical physicists, nuclear physicists, electronics engineers, biophysicists, geophysicists, web developers, analysts, data security and mathematical modelling specialists.

On 3-7 July, the 10th anniversary international conference “Distributed Computing and Grid Technologies in Science and Education” (GRID’2023) was held at the Meshcheryakov Laboratory of Information Technologies in a mixed format. Meeting on problems in nuclear and particle physics took place in South Korea
From 9 to 15 July, the 14th Meeting “Modern Problems in Nuclear and Particle Physics” was held in Pohang located in the south-east of the Korean Peninsula. The organizers of the event were the Asia-Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP) and the Bogoliubov Laboratory of Theoretical Physics JINR. About 50 specialists discussed the issues of nuclear and particle physics. The meeting was attended by young scientists both from JINR and from the member states of the Asia-Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics, which gives hope for the successful continuation of this series of meetings. Scientists of the Laboratory of Neutron Physics JINR have developed a new position-sensitive gas detector of thermal and cold neutrons. According to the inventors, the detector surpasses in its characteristics similar detectors used in European scientific centres. FLNP JINR researchers studied charge effect on morphological changes of cell membrane
A group of scientists at the Laboratory of Neutron Physics (FLNP JINR), in collaboration with colleagues from the Laboratory of Information Technologies, continues to study the interaction of amyloid-beta peptide (Aß_25-35) with model lipid membranes. These interactions provide a basis for an amyloid-beta theory of the etiology of Alzheimer’s disease that explains the damage of lipid membranes of brain cells caused by the influence of the amyloid-beta peptides. The latest experiment by JINR scientists has shown that previously observed morphological changes of membranes and their damage are independent of the charge existence in the system. Ficus and eucalyptus helped to assess air quality in Egypt
Scientists of the Laboratory of Neutron Physics JINR developed a methodology for conducting environmental air monitoring based on the neutron activation analysis. According to the results of a recent study, JINR scientists managed not only to obtain data on the air quality in Egypt, but also to make a forecast about its condition in the future and find out what threats it may pose to public health. Scientists used to carry out such monitoring with the help of mosses, and in such a way the air state was assessed in a number of the JINR Member States.However, it turned out that moss is not suitable for research in Egypt due to the hot climate. Scientists found an alternative solution choosing evergreen plants common in the country. Biomonitors were eucalyptus, namely Eucalyptus globulus Labill, and ficus, namely Ficus microcarpa L.f. and Ficus benjamina L. More in Russian.

JINR scientists tested bakery yeast’s ability to extract precious metals from wastewater
Performing experiment with silver-containing wastewater and ordinary baker’s yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the group of scientists from the Sector of Neutron Activation Analysis and Applied Research of the
Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics of JINR confirmed the amazing ability of yeast to adsorb metal ions. The researchers were able to achieve 100% silver removal from wastewater. Large IT-School finished in Vladikavkaz
From 15 to 17 June, a jubilee 5th International Summer School for Young Scientists “Modern information technologies for solving scientific and applied problems” was held at the North Ossetian State University. This is an annual event held on the platform of the first Information Centre of JINR in the South of Russia with active participation of the Joint Institute. This time there were participants not only from North Caucasus but also from the Far East. Within the participation in the event Head of the JINR delegation, Director of the Institute Grigory Trubnikov met with Head of the Republic of North Ossetia – Alania Sergey Menyaylo, as well as discussed training of staff for scientific and digital economy. FLNP JINR scientists study promising gold deposits in the Eastern Desert of Egypt
Scientists of the group of neutron activation analysis of the Laboratory of Neutron Physics JINR together with their colleagues from Mansoura University of Egypt within the framework of the cooperation with the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology (ASRT) have studied rock samples from the gold mines of Egypt. The study was aimed at determining the elemental composition of ore and the prospects of deposits. More in Russian.

JINR scientists found coefficient of angular anisotropy of emission of gamma-rays relative to fission axis
A group of scientists of the Laboratory of Neutron Physics JINR has carried out a more detailed analysis of the data obtained during experiments in 2016-2018 on measuring the rotation effect of the fission axis, the so-called ROT effect, in the binary fission of ²³⁵U induced by monochromatic polarised neutrons. A new approach to the data allowed scientists to find the coefficient of angular anisotropy of emission of gamma-rays relative to the fission axis in 2020. The Romanian Reports in Physics journal published the scientific article with the obtained results in 2023.

NOSU joined ARIADNA Applied Research Collaboration at NICA
On 17 June, a festive signing of the Memorandum of Understanding took place in Vladivostok on the admission of the K. L. Khetagurov North Ossetian State University to the ARIADNA collaboration for carrying out the applied research programme at the NICA Accelerator Complex. The ceremony took place at the JINR Information Centre in the South of Russia at NOSU. In search of causes of Alzheimer’s disease: JINR scientists recorded temperature effect on structure of cell membrane
A new cycle of the Alzheimer’s disease study has begun with the development of modern experimental techniques and effective detection tools. Today, this severe neurodegenerative disease is an urgent problem all over the world. Alzheimer’s disease is called the most common type of dementia affecting the elderly. Currently, there are no effective drugs for this disease. Any treatment is almost impossible due to the diagnosis in the late stages, as well as the lack of an unambiguous understanding of the aetiology of the disease. In this regard, the study of the fundamental mechanisms of the occurrence of Alzheimer’s disease is becoming very important. More in Russian.

Protein of tardigrades increased resistance of flies to radiation, but made them slower
Scientists of the Sector of Molecular Genetics of the Cell of the Dzhelepov Laboratory of Nuclear Problems JINR have managed to increase the resistance of fruit flies and human cultured cells to radiation and oxidative stress
using the unique damage suppressor protein of tardigrades (Dsup). Experiments conducted at JINR prove the hypothesis about the action mechanism of proteins of tardigrades and could open up new possibilities in the fields of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and oncology. More in Russian.

On 16 May, the first stage of the International Student Practice organized by the JINR University Centre started at the Joint Institute. 22 trainees – students and young scientists from universities and research centres of the Arab Republic of Egypt – came to Dubna for three weeks. The grand opening of the photo exhibition featuring works by Mark Kozhura took place on 3 June on the Mendeleev embankment in Dubna. The JINR Annual Report on activities of the Institute in 2022 was published. As of 1 January 2023, the total number of the staff members at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research was 5,156 (without temporary staff members). Joint research was conducted with scientific centres in the Member States, as well as with international and national organizations in other countries, on 42 topics of first priority and one topic of second priority. 24 international scientific conferences and schools were organized and held. On 18 May, an international working meeting on the development of the JINR University Centre project “Open information and educational environment to support fundamental and applied interdisciplinary research at JINR” took place. 28 May marks the birthday of one of the JINR founders, a prominent Chinese scientist, a researcher in the fields of nuclear physics, cosmic rays, and elementary particle physics, RAS Academician Wang Ganchang (1907-1998). Wang Ganchang achieved worldwide recognition by making a major contribution to the development of Chinese science and technology, high technology. In 1956, the Chinese government sent him to JINR to develop high energy physics in China. At JINR, he was first a researcher until 1958 and the JINR Vice-Director from 1958 to 1960. More in Russian.

Ara-C radiosensitizer will help in proton therapy of melanoma
Employees of the Laboratory of Radiation Biology JINR have developed a fundamentally new method of increasing the biological efficiency of medical proton beams and gamma-therapeutic facilities. 1-β- D- arabinofuranosylcytosine (AraC), a well-known drug used in chemotherapy for leukaemia, in combination with proton radiation turned out to be able to inhibit the melanoma development in mice. The injector of NICA at VBLHEP JINR is part of the accelerator complex, where a beam of charged particles is formed, accelerated, and transported before getting into the Booster and Nuclotron Cyclic Accelerators. Yesterday, on 15 May, the 10th Collaboration Meeting of the BM@N Experiment started at Saint Petersburg University (SPbU). The event is taking place in a mixed format. JINR conducts research on frescoes of Moscow Kremlin Cathedra
JINR scientists are working together with restorers in the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Moscow Kremlin. As a result, physicists together with art historians will be able to reliably determine what the colours of the frescoes were in reality, carry out their digital reconstruction and understand exactly how a particular colour changed. A photo exhibition “Bulgaria’s contribution to the Slavic cultural heritage” opened at the JINR Cultural Centre “Mir” on 11 May. This exhibition has already been presented in a number of European countries. The exhibition includes photocopies of ancient handwritten documents in Glagolitic and Cyrillic alphabets, stored in the archives of Bulgaria, Macedonia, Russia, and Serbia, as well as photographs of frescoes of churches and monasteries that are significant for the history of the Bulgarian people. JINR going to increase electrical power capacity for scientific facilities
The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research is going to reconstruct the main step-down substation No. 620 “Sestra” located at the technical site of the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems. Scientists of the Laboratory of Neutron Physics JINR measured the crystallographic texture of magnesium alloys. It will help to understand how to make the alloy more ductile and less breakable. Scientists carried out the study at the

JINR develops platform for plant disease detection
Employees of the Laboratory of Information Technologies JINR have developed an online platform pdd.jinr.ru to detect diseases of indoor and agricultural plants. To solve the task, they used convolutional neural networks widely used for image classification. The neural network architecture of the platform can detect various diseases and pests with an accuracy of more than 95%. At the beginning of 2023, specialists increased the number of classes of the general model of pdd.jinr.ru up to 60. They also developed a couple of specific models for such popular indoor plants as dracaena and spathiphyllum. More in Russian.

First relocation of MPD solenoid in current configuration
On 14 April, specialists moved for the first time the 800-ton superconducting solenoid in the current configuration in the Multi-Purpose Detector (MPD) pavilion of the NICA Accelerator Complex in the
Laboratory of High Energy Physics JINR. In addition, inseparably from the solenoid, they moved the side platform for electronic equipment designed for reading data from MPD detectors. The relocation was required to solve the problems of electronics installation and became a good rehearsal of this complex technological manipulation for the project team.

Hemodialysis unit opened at Medical Unit No. 9 with participation of JINR
On 31 March, on the basis of the Medical Unit No. 9 of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency of Russia, a hemodialysis unit was opened for the JINR employees and residents of the Dubna city. The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research provides the Medical Unit No. 9 with continuous support in the equipment renewal and premises repair. There will be three shifts in the hemodialysis unit. On 23 March, an FLNP chief researcher Alexander Frank gave a seminar with a presentation of his author’s collection “Questions of optics of long-wavelength neutrons” at the Laboratory of Neutron Physics JINR. The author is a recognised scientist in the field of fundamental properties of the neutron. The collection presents his selected works about some problems of optics of slow neutrons, namely cold and ultracold ones. JINR-MIPT School on Quark-Gluon Plasma Physics started
Today, the joint JINR-MIPT School on Quark-Gluon Plasma Physics has been launched becoming the first event held at the new building of the JINR University Centre. During five days, participants will become acquainted with the Joint Institute and its projects, listen to a number of lectures, and make a tour of the JINR laboratories. JINR youth organization presented results of work for year
At the general meeting of the Association of Young Scientists and Specialists of JINR, Chairman of the AYSS Council, a junior researcher at the Dzhelepov Laboratory of Nuclear Problems Vladislav Rozhkov reported on the work done. He also presented the plans for the year. To date, AYSS has more than 1,000 young employees. The Association holds regular scientific and social events. Celebrations dedicated to JINR Foundation Day
On 26 March, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research celebrated its 67th anniversary. This year, several events were held to mark the Institute’s Foundation Day. The day before, a new building of the JINR University Centre was inaugurated. The culmination of the holiday was a festive concert at the JINR Cultural Centre “Mir”, at which Russian, regional, and departmental awards were presented to the Institute’s employees. New building of JINR UC opened
On 25 March, a festive opening of a new building of the JINR University Centre at 4A, Vavilov Street took place. The UC JINR moved to the building where the Dubna branch of MIREA was located until 2015 and then bought out by the Joint Institute. In 2021 – 2023, a major repair was carried out in the building. First observation of collider neutrinos by FASER
The FASER international collaboration has detected neutrinos obtained at the collider at CERN. The discovery promises to deepen scientists’ understanding of the nature of neutrinos, first spotted in 1956, which are the most abundant particle in the cosmos and play a key role in the process that makes stars burn. The work could also shed light on cosmic neutrinos that travel large distances and collide with the Earth, providing a window on distant parts of the cosmos. More in Russian.

Catalogue of ATLAS Experiment events created at CERN with participation of JINR scientists
An international group of scientists, which included specialists from the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, created the EventIndex system. The system deals with data from the ATLAS Experiment at the CERN LHC accelerator. Annually, several billions of particle interactions are detected at this research facility. The EventIndex system not only contains a catalogue of all the registered and simulated events, but also allows scientists to work with the data. The EventIndex project results have been recently published in a high-ranking scientific journal

Structural studies of future materials conducted at JINR
National University of Science and Technology MISiS researchers together with scientists from the
Laboratory of Neutron Physics JINR conducted studies of biocompatible polymer materials used in endoprostheses, as well as advanced carbon composites at the Xeuss 3.0 X-ray scattering station. Carbon fibre composite material is known for its use in aviation, as well as in the creation of exoprostheses, i. e. prostheses. Within the framework of these studies, JINR is part of the collaboration of the Laboratory of Accelerated Particles (“Luch”), which is being created at NUST MISiS. More in Russian.

Results of 2022 sociological survey
The data of a sociological survey among almost 600 JINR employees has been processed. The survey was carried out in December 2022. You can read the report on the JINR website in the “For employees” section. The index assessing the level of social satisfaction of JINR employees has showed that there have been no significant changes over the past year. The share of rather and fully satisfied respondents was 63.9%, according to the results of last year’s survey in 2021 the share was 64.1%. More in Russian.

“Many researchers can defend dissertation”
Last year, 17 JINR employees defended their PhD theses, of which 11 applicants represented the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics. One of them is a junior researcher at the scientific department of nuclear theory, Evgeny Mardyban, defended his dissertation at the end of 2022. At the moment, Evgeny is the youngest PhD candidate at the Institute, he is 27 years old. He started working at JINR in 2014, while being a student at Dubna University. JINR Infocentre opened in Irkutsk became platform for cooperation between universities
On 7 March, the JINR Information Centre opened at Irkutsk State University, a long-time partner of the Institute. On the opening day of the new Infocentre, a cooperation agreement was signed between JINR, Irkutsk State University, and the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences on the opening of the astrophysical laboratory in Irkutsk.In addition, an agreement was signed between Irkutsk State University and Tomsk Polytechnic University on participation in the TAIGA and Baikal-GVD Projects. JINR and eight research institutes and universities of Russia joined together to develop Russian neutrino programme
On 6 March, Minister of Science and Higher Education of Russia Valery Falkov met with representatives of eight leading scientific institutes and universities of Russia, as well as the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The meeting took place at the Shore Centre of the neutrino telescope on Lake Baikal. The participants discussed the establishment of a nationwide development programme in neutrino physics and astrophysics and the results and prospects for the development of the Baikal deep underwater neutrino telescope. In addition, they considered the intermediate results of the current expedition, during which the collaboration plans to install two new clusters of optical modules.

Celebration of 110th anniversary of Academician Georgy Flerov
2 March marked the 110th anniversary of the birth of the famous scientist Georgy N. Flerov (1913 – 1990), the founder and first Director of the Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions JINR. In honour of this date, on 3 March, members of the JINR Directorate and leadership of the Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions laid flowers at the monument to G. N. Flerov on Veksler Street. The key event of the celebration was a special seminar dedicated to the memory of the scientist. On 26 February, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research pays tribute to the memory of the outstanding scientist Alexander Mikhailovich Baldin (1926 – 2001), the founder of the scientific field relativistic nuclear physics, who for almost thirty years headed the JINR Laboratory of High Energy Physics. In addition to that, the author of a number of discoveries, laureate of the USSR State and Lenin Prizes, Academician Baldin made contributions to such areas of microworld physics as physics of electromagnetic interactions of hadrons and nuclei, the quark structure of matter, physics and technology of particle accelerators and nuclei. Baikal-GVD confirmed observation of astrophysical neutrino
Based on the data acquired at the Baikal-GVD Neutrino Telescope, participants of the project managed to confirm the presence of a neutrino flux of the astrophysical nature, which had been earlier discovered at the IceCube Antarctic Neutrino Telescope. The article by the Baikal-GVD collaboration on the first results of the search for astrophysical neutrinos in the project has been published in a high-rank scientific journal Physical Review D. On 16 February, the 133rd regular session of the Scientific Council of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research started. The new membership of the Council is taking part in the event. It was approved for 5 years at the meeting of the Committee of Plenipotentiaries (CP) of the Governments of the Member States in November 2022. The members of the Council considered and discussed the final version of the new Seven-Year Plan for the JINR Development, which will be approved in March by the Committee of Plenipotentiaries. Launching Regular Expedition to Construct Baikal Neutrino Telescope
From 17 February 2023, the regular expedition to construct the cubic-kilometer Deep Underwater Neutrino Telescope Baikal-GVD is getting underway at Lake Baikal. During about two months, the Baikal-GVD collaboration plans to install two new clusters of optical modules, three service buoy stations with calibration lasers, to develop further the system of data transmission via optical lines inside the facility, and also to lay two bottom cable lines of cluster power supply. On 8 February 2023, in Kolkata, India, an inception meeting was held in preparation for the G20 Research and Innovation Ministers’ Meeting. The meeting was aimed at a general discussion of the given topics and their elaboration for discussion at the upcoming forum. Formulas linking physics at different scales obtained at BLTP
Employees of the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics JINR have derived the most general formulas that make it possible to obtain multi-loop renormalization group equations in an arbitrary generalisation of the Standard Model without the need for explicit calculation of millions of Feynman diagrams arising in the higher orders of perturbation theory.

Demidov Prize awarded to Alexey Rozanov
On 10 February, an awarding ceremony of the Demidov Prize, one of the most prestigious Russian awards for scientists, took place in the residence of the Governor of the Sverdlovsk Region. It is a non-governmental prize awarded to Russian scientists moving fundamental science forward. One of the winners of the Demidov Prize 2022 in the category “Biology” is Academician Alexey Rozanov, Head of the Astrobiology Sector of the Laboratory of Radiation Biology JINR, the Head of two laboratories of the Borissiak Paleontological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, for his significant contribution to the development of paleontology. JINR used DIRAC platform to triple speed of scientific tasks implementation
Since 2016, JINR has created and is developing a service for unified access to heterogeneous distributed computing resources based on the DIRAC Interware open platform, which includes all the main computing resources of JINR. The created platform has already made it possible to accelerate the processing of large sets of jobs by about three times. The speed of computing is provided, among other things, by the integration of the clouds of scientific organizations of the JINR Member States, the cluster of the National Autonomous University in Mexico, and the resources of the National Research Computer Network of Russia, NIKS, which provides access to the network infrastructure to more than 200 organizations of higher education and science. On 8 February, the Day of Russian Science, FLNR JINR Scientific Leader RAS Academician Yuri Oganessian delivered a lecture “The mass boundaries of atomic nuclei” by invitation of Rector of Moscow State University Victor Sadovnichy. Listeners stood in the aisles since the hall of the MSU Cultural Centre, where the outstanding scientist spoke, could barely accommodate everyone. New device for decelerating neutrons invented at JINR
A device for producing cold and ultracold neutrons has been designed at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. Ultracold neutrons (UCN) are widely used in the elementary particle physics and fundamental interactions thanks to their property to be reflected from a surface of certain materials at any angle of incidence, unlike neutrons of other energies that scatter in the surrounding matter very fast. In the scientific world, scientists have not completely solved the problem of neutron deceleration, because there are great losses of particles at the output in many well-known devices. The new JINR device contributes to solving this problem. More in Russian.

Minister of Science and Higher Education of Russia met with young JINR scientists
At the meeting, Valery Falkov announced that the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia together with JINR will launch a support programme for students and postgraduates to attract them to work at the NICA Collider. The main topics of discussion were the achievements and results of the last run at the accelerator complex, as well as targeted support for young and experienced researchers, including from abroad, in work on the megasience class facility being prepared for launch. The Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation also visited the site of the NICA Complex, where he got acquianted with the progress of the project. More in Russian.

Fourth stage of commissioning works at NICA Complex completed
On 3 February, the fourth and the longest run in the history of the NICA Accelerator Complex ended at the
Veksler and Baldin Laboratory of High Energy Physics JINR. The project team worked out the conditions of joint operation of all the elements of the collider’s heavy-ion injection chain, achieved a record for the Nuclotron intensity of a xenon nuclei beam, and gained significant statistics at the BM@N facility. Electron cooling of heavy xenon ions obtained at NICA Complex
During the 4th commissioning cycle, specialists optimised electron cooling of ¹²⁴Хе²⁸⁺ ions at the Booster of the NICA Accelerator Complex. The achieved reduction in the beam size in the Booster resulted in more efficient transfer of it to the Nuclotron. It increased the intensity of the accelerated beam by about one and a half times. More than half a million events in first experiment at NICA

Kuzbass school students in cooperation with FLNP JINR assessing environmental situation in their cities
High school students from seven cities of the Kemerovo Region are taking part in JINR study on the assessment of atmospheric and soil pollution in Russian regions. Soil samples collected by them near coal mining fields, industrial enterprises, and thermal power plants will be analysed for the content of radionuclides. Mosses as biomonitors placed there will show the presence of heavy metals in the air. More in Russian.

Five new isotopes synthesised at Superheavy Element Factory
Scientific Leader of the Superheavy Element Factory (SHE) at the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions JINR in 2020 – 2022, scientists synthesised five new isotopes of superheavy elements such as ²⁶⁴Lr, ²⁸⁶Mc, ²⁷⁶Ds, ²⁷²Hs, and ²⁶⁸Sg.The fact that for the two years of operation of the Factory several previously unknown isotopes have been discovered at the same time indicates that this is an advanced research complex that sets new standards in the field of synthesis and study of the properties of superheavy elements. DLNP scientists advanced in study of dibaryon resonances
In January 2023, the Physical Review C journal published an article “Resonant behavior of the pp→{pp}_sπ⁰ reaction at the energy √s=2.65 GeV” [Phys. Rev. C 107, 015202] by JINR scientists. In their work, authors report on the first observation of a peak in the energy dependence of the pp→{pp}_sπ⁰ reaction at the proton kinetic energy 1.9 GeV (√ s = 2.65 GeV). More in Russian.

JINR scientists guarding ecology of the Nile
A group of scientists from the Laboratory of Neutron Physics JINR together with Egyptian colleagues, checked the elemental composition of shallow marine sediments in the Nile valley and soils on the banks of the river. They found out that, in general, the results of the work allow us to state that the river is clean. The samples were collected in Egypt, and although the researchers did not find critical values, there is a risk that the situation could get worse.

On 8 January, the Joint Institute pays tribute to the memory of the outstanding Bulgarian physicist Georgi Stefanov Nadjakov (8.01.1897 – 24.02.1981), who made a significant contribution to the development of JINR during the first decades of the Institute’s existence.From 1957 to 1970, Georgi Nadjakov was Plenipotentiary Representative of Bulgaria in JINR.
